Thursday Morning Policy Statement and Open Thread

Good morning, C2ers! It's a beautiful sunny day, the birds are singing, the construction crews are working hard, the smell of diesel is in the air, and I'm on my third Vente coffee. How much more full of of Awesome can this day get?

Before I get to the news, I am obligated by an overbearing sense of duty and responsibility to post our mission statement, and a brief reminder of a few things, before we get to the fun stuff, so bear with me.

We understand that some people may not be aware of our policies here, and though we've stated them a couple of times, things get buried quickly on Blogspot so you may not have seen our posts on it. That's our bad, not yours, but just so you know, here it is once more.

We're moving forward, and because we're moving forward, we ask that you do the same while you're here. If you have negative feelings about other websites or their members, please resist writing about them on Correspondence Committee. We're determined to stay out of any blog wars that may be going on between other sites, and we ask for your help achieving that goal.

Our focus will be a positive, fresh political website with a level playing field, and we are thrilled that each and every one of you has joined us. We really are.

We appreciate your cooperation on these matters, and invite you all to move forward with us.

So, with all that rigamarole out of the way, let us take a look at the news this morning, shall we?

First up, in the Cult of Personality category - Have you ever wanted to feel like you belong? Have you ever thought, "I want to feel really special!"? Have you ever looked at your naked ring finger and thought, "You know what would look really good right there? An Obama class ring. Oh yeah!"?

Well, now all your dreams can come true: The Obama Class Ring.

As an extra item this morning, there's a piece on CNN, remembering a Medal of Honor recipient: Medal of Honor recipient remembered as a selfless friend.

Has the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle been solved? Will Jimmah Carter stand by what he said? Will President Obama sell out Poland and the Czech Republic? Will I drink more coffee this morning?

As always, this is an open thread about whatever. Enjoy!

P.S. That's Miles Davis, for those who didn't know.

  5. Good morning RunningBare. Thanks for the repost of the policy statement. I kinda knew a bit about it, and I have been trying to follow it.

This wasn't directed at any one person - we just have new people showing up every day, and we all felt a reminder was in order. I really hate having to pull comments - it makes me feel all dirty. I'd prefer if I never had to.

Our rules are few, but the ones we do have are important, and there for good reasons :)

  6. Ax Control NOW!!!!!!

Forget about axes, how about gasoline control and glass bottles. Don't you know how much energy he wasted? Not just the burning gasoline, what about all the energy wasted by not recycling the glass bottle. It's heresy I tell you, heresy.

  7. That, and that burning fuel was bad for the environment. He probably just sped up the oncoming Global Warming by a few seconds. He's KILLED US ALL!

  8. RB: I know it was a general statement. It's good to remind all the newcomers. We are trying to recapture what we enjoyed, not devolve into another hate fest. So far things are looking good. Can't wait to see the new place when it goes live.

  9. Wow, was looking at my Flickr account and forgot how prolific I was with my pictures. Over 1900 on there alone. And that's not all the ones I have taken. Have several hundred more from before that, and at least several hundred I have taken since June. I shudder to think what the developing cost would have been with film. Not to mention film costs.

  23. Good morning, yma. "Madame" is...? Who? (I don't want to assume.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm hoping "Madame" is a dog. As in Canine.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hiya, CC!

Madame is my beloved Border Collie, whose real name is Jodi, and whom i have promoted to 'Madame Dog' because of her advanced age.
    I mean, she's 12 and 1/2 now - would you still call a 90-year old lady 'baby'?

Anyway, once the building work is done here, and we can stick little avatars in, there'll be one showing Madame, in all her cheeky beauty!

(Yeah, I do love her to bits, stating the blimmin' obvious!)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wendy, that's what I was thinking (it seemed obvious), but I didn't want to assume. : )

Sounded like a pretty nice scene, in any case. I love fall! I'm going to have to get my slow cooker out and make something delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hiya, Wendy - yep, Madame is your typical house wolf - pocket size!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh - dunno about you, but the security thingies we type, to sort the 'umans from the robots, look to me like words from a strange language which I don't know, but which sounds vaguely familiar, and the meaning of which I surely one day will decipher ...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I thought so, yma! Wonderful.

I am a dog lover, too. I have a Welsh Corgi, and a Corgi/Basset mix. They are my joy!

Can't wait to see the avatar!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Corgies - aahhh!
They are Welsh dogs, herding dogs like Border Collies.
and of course they're 'Royal' dogs - the Queen is a great admirer, has even bred her own ...

Yep, one avatars are up and running, we can admire our dogs all round!

  36. Yes, he's my second purebred Corgi. His herding instinct is even more intense than the first; he is just a control freak. Honestly. And he is fearless.

I've never personally known a Border Collie, but I believe they're ranked very high on the breed intelligence list (first, maybe?); when they herd, what do they do? Do they nip, like a Corgi?

Mine tries to keep me home, and tries to keep people from climbing up on things. He's just a beast. LOL (We are really bonded, he and I...I love him so dearly.)

  38. Thanks for that link, Wendy. Boy, Specter sure is trying to impress his new colleagues, huh?

    Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh yea...all this on the 70th anniversary of the Russian invasion of Poland.

    ...ain't that slick?

    ReplyDelete
  40. From the link:

"The new old 'card check,' according to Mr. Specter, also gives unions unprecedented access to the workplace and meetings between employers and employees before a vote to unionize. Last we checked the Constitution, even in the age of Obama private companies haven't signed away their property rights."

    ReplyDelete
  41. You'd almost think a subtle message was being sent, enuff.

    ReplyDelete
  42. when they herd, what do they do? Do they nip, like a Corgi?

A well experienced border herds more by intimidation. If you've ever seen them in action, they stalk sheep much like a predator. It is not out of the ordinary for a border to zip in and nip a recalcitrant sheep that just won't move.

I've got an English Shepherd and they have a different style. he doesn't go into stalking mode but isn't afraid to rush in and bark/nip when necessary. When he wants me to do something, he tires to herd me.

Nice. This guy is going to give me an ulcer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wendy:

My Corgi does that. I can tell from his body language when he is about to do this...he sort of freezes, then starts to walk slowly, then he bolts toward his target. And he's fearless.

    Perfect description.

My first one was way more mellow...just nipped your heels, trying to direct your movement. This one is a total control freak.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Here's your list of those charged with pulling ACORN to the curb, by the way.

The Council includes many prominent Democrats, including the man who helped President Obama Transition Team, John Podesta, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress; former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend; Andrew Stern, International President of the Service Employees International Union; and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros.

  49. Now here is what I would call a load of bull crap. Notice how the countries that got A or B grades are the countries with high taxes and large social welfare programs. I think our poorest now would be considered some of the well off years ago. Just with their lifestyle alone.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "It is a big victory for the Czech Republic. We are happy that we will be able to continue to live in our beautiful country without the presence of foreign soldiers," said Jan Tamas, an activist who had organized numerous protests.

    Idiot.

  51. They do not fear Obama one bit.

Sometimes I think American citizens are the only ones who fear Obama.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My first one was way more mellow...just nipped your heels, trying to direct your movement. This one is a total control freak.

Aengus doesn't nip at my heels. First, he gives me "the eye". If I ignore him (first rule, do NOT make eye contact) he jumps up and down. Now, he's something of a mutant at 90lbs so that generally gets my attention as the walls start to shake. If that doesn't "motivate" me, he starts with the nudging, sticking his snout under my arm and pushing it up. When all else fails, the nibbling comes into play. He will very gently start nibbling on my arm which is exceptionally creepy and generally gets him whatever it was he wanted.

  53. P2 - from the link:

In the overall rankings, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands are given A grades. Canada joins Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium and France with B grades. Ireland, Germany, Italy, Australia and Britain received C grades and the U.S. and Japan are the two D performers among the 17 countries ranked.

Heaven forbid people should bear some responsibility in figuring this out for themselves.

Half the "poor" people I see whining on DU about various things don't see the irony of being able to spend all day complaining about it in front of a computer, while watching MSNBC.

  54. Morning, CC.

  55. Hey y'all - brief drive by before heading out again - according to Rasmussen:
Just before President Obama gave his speech to Congress last week, 44% of voters nationwide supported his health care reform proposal and 53% were opposed. Today, eight days after the speech and a brief bounce, a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 44% support the health care plan and 53% are opposed. Absolutely no change.

It’s worth noting that support and opposition were at precisely the same levels in mid-July. In fact, other than brief blips following a nationally televised press conference by the president and his recent speech to Congress, opposition to the plan has been stable at 53% throughout July and August and now into September."

  56. CC: Have you ever noticed that a lot of "poor" people seem to have weight problems? I know that some people have blamed it on poor diet choices. Still every time I see someone like that complaining about how their welfare has been cut I cringe. Ever see pictures from the great depression where the real poor had a gaunt look to their faces? It seems that our modern culture has lost a lot of context of what some words mean, or definitions have been greatly changed.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm sitting here, trying to recall something good that Obama has done so far. I am not so partisan that I cannot recognize a good job when I see one, and the only two things I can come up with: Green-lighting the snipers to take out the Somali pirates (after multiple requests, if I'm not mistaken), and calling Kanye West a jackass.

What else is there? Somebody help me.

Oh...and he looks very nice in a suit. That's three.

    ReplyDelete
  58. P2, I know what you mean.

The way things are going - the direction we are being taken, I should say - I wonder if we'll see those gaunt faces again.

  62. Half the "poor" people I see whining on DU about various things don't see the irony of being able to spend all day complaining about it in front of a computer, while watching MSNBC.

That just kills me. They're always bitching and whining about how they can't afford this, they can't afford that... but they can damned sure afford a computer, DSL and Cable/Satellite television.

    ReplyDelete
  63. And by the way, Bare, I can't believe you left off the most important news of the day:

EARN TRIPLE REWARDS POINTS AT NORDSTROM NOW THROUGH SUNDAY

This has been a public service announcement. Thank you.

  66. Hey CorrespondenceCommittee - I know something else Obama has done: I've HEARD (no links though)that he's managed to sit through several meetings with Pelosi and Biden at the same time without throwing up!!
    Now THAT'S a politician!!
Now I'm outta here again, have a great day you all and I hope to get the chance to see you all down the road!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I used to love the Walmart wars they'd have on DU. Some people would say they couldn't afford to shop anywhere else, and a number of others would come along and scold them for "betraying the cause" or some such thing.

Because they care so very much about low income individuals, I guess.

Interesting, too - one of the Democrat talking points against Walmart has been that they are thin on benefits for their employees, forcing many of them to turn to state programs for health care.

This, of course, was supposed to turn conservatives against Walmart. I'll bet we've heard the last of that argument. NOW government health programs are the bees knees, you know. The more people who take advantage of them, the better!

  70. Obama supporters asked to urge passage of Senate succession bill

    What a shock!

    Not.

Obama has been in campaign mode since the day he was sworn in. I'd love for some intrepid reporter to calculate the number of hours per month he spends campaigning and fundraising. Is it too much to ask that our President, whatever party he represents, spends his time on duties that affect the entire nation instead of pimping for his party?
