Tuesday Morning Open Thread

So, Autumn is in the air - the leaves are turning beautiful colors, the bone-crunching sounds of football fills the air, and terror cells continue to operate in America's larger cities:

NEW YORK (AP) - The FBI and Homeland Security officials are warning local police departments to be on the look out for materials that could be used to make explosives. The warning came as officials investigate a suspected al-Qaida associate and raided three New York City apartments.

Investigators issued warrants to search the residences for explosives material but did not find any, according to a person briefed on the matter who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity.

In other news, Kayne West (AKA Gay Fish) is still a jackass. Good thing Obama spoke up, or I never would have known about it. I'm so out of the loop on who is winning what award for whatever thing it is that they did.

But hey, enough about famous people acting badly in public. Let's talk about Joe Wilson, who is set to be rebuked by his colleagues today for his outburst against President Obama during an address to congress.

Hey, whatever happened with that whole Pete Stark thing back in 2007, anyway? Silly question. Sorry.

So grab a cup of coffee, tea, or whatever your morning beverage of choice happens to be, and enjoy the company of friends as we look at the top news stories of the day. Or, we could talk about the raccoons and barn owls that are terrorizing my garbage cans. Your choice.

I want to know what the "leadership" in Washington, D.C. is planning to do about this menace that effects every man, woman, and child in this country.

How many garbage cans must be overturned, dented, destroyed, or torn apart before they finally do something?

  7. Any news, is it?

    Well, here's a nice headline:
'Gordon Brown: I will make cuts, but not yet'

A bit like St Augustine then ...

Here in the UK, September is the month of the annual party conferences, kicking of with the annual Trade Union one, where Gord spoke.

Ah well, we're now into electioneering territory, and it'll be the wise and encessary Labour cuts (as if the last 12 years had nothing at all to do with them!) against the savage, irresponsible Tory slashers.

    Fun and games ...

Amazing, isn't it, how the LLL governments speak precisely the same language.

It'll be interesting to see how the German Elections pan out - they go to the polls on sptember 27th. It would be good if Chancellor Merkel got a sufficient majority to go it alone.
Maggie she most certainly is not - but its nice to have a conservative government on the continent.

We might be going to the polls in a month or so. Thank goodness most of our elections are short. Like election called, month later we vote.

Right now, the UK is in an even worse mess than when she took over. Hoepfully her grand-children will be able to get us out of it!

And here also, when the election is called - its three weeks electioneering proper - vote on Thursday - winner on Friday - loser (that would be Gord!) out of 10 Downing Street that evening.

Thanks to having a shadow cabinet, the new government can hit the road running ...

I've always wondered how there can ever be any semblance of continuity and stability when a system runs in such a way.

Although, I can certainly see some upside - with enough pressure, I guess you could bring a government down and replace it very quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That system is pretty stable, because the government usually has a workable majority.
Once a Party has been in office for too long, like 12 years, say! - the backbenchers start plotting and voting against the government and with the opposition.
Yes, that could bring a government down - but this hasn't happened, the politicians are clever enough to call an election beofre. In the UK, there are no set terms, it can be anything from one year to five - after five years, an election must be called.
Maggie called her second election after about two years, after she'd won in the Falklands War.

It's been a while sinc emy last arrest, too, so I dont' know all the ins-and-outs of entrapment. How often are police posing as prostitutes, soliciting guys, then arresting them when they agree? Same thing seems to happen with drug deals, and Narcotics Squads.

I realy dont' know. I don't know that it really applies anyway, since it was private citizens doing it, and so there were no apparent legal consequences for the ACORN workers.

  45. Meanwhile, from the new Big Government site:

Last week, we saw some pretty disturbing activities revealed in the undercover footage from ACORN Housing’s Baltimore office. By any measure of conduct, the actions of ACORN’s employees should never have happened. It turns out the actions shouldn’t have happened for another, very simple, reason: ACORN can’t legally operate in the state of Maryland.

According to the following documents, ACORN, Inc.–the parent organization of all things ACORN–forfeited its corporate charter in Maryland in 2006. ACORN Housing forfeited its corporate charter in 2008. Any ACORN office in the state of Maryland is potentially operating illegally.
