The Pub is going to open at 5:00PM PST/8:00PM EST today. We thought it would be a good idea to re-post a few thoughts on our policy for those who haven't had a chance to see it...otherwise, here's a free-for-all for you to continue talking about today's news and sharing your own links.
And now for that policy re-post thingy:
We've had a couple of questions about our policy and where the line is. They're very good questions, as we realize the line isn't always clear. Maybe some explanation of the spirit of the policy will help:
We really are seeking to move forward. Staying in the past, well...it's like looking too much into your rear-view mirror when you're driving. Just not a great idea. Or getting stuck in a muddy rut. It feels pretty good to get moving again. (Please note: we're not comparing anyplace or anyone to a muddy rut - we're talking about getting stuck in place, and being paralyzed there.)
That's what we want to do. Get moving again.
And here's the thing - out of thousands of posts, we've had to remove very few - we mean very few. We aren't counting, but it's probably been fewer than twenty. And of those, most have been very benign and well-meaning...but the reason we're removing even some benign comments is that we believe they could lead others to respond, and before long, that's what people are talking about.
So the bottom line is that we're seeking to keep everyone looking toward the road ahead while they're here - and if you say something that's benign on a topic we may be avoiding, it may very well be removed - but it's honestly not personal, and we ask that you please not take it that way. It's just for the purpose of moving the community forward and building our own identity. And please know this: we are tremendously grateful to this community for helping to make it a positive, friendly, and forward-looking place to visit. We're having a great time, and we hope you are too.

ReplyDeleteHey .. you ain't fooling me ... I know it's a long way down out that door ...
ReplyDeleteI want to thank the administrators of the sight for making it a welcoming place. I like the forward looking aspect of it. Posting with such fine people that I've come to know over the years is great. Just like slipping on an old pair of shoes. I hope to continue contributing what little I can.
ReplyDeleteTruck Money ... you go first ... let me know what's out there ...
ReplyDeleteZ2, just don't look down! (That's the art I'm using on a new forum logo to be unveiled at a later date - makes an okay open thread graphic all by itself!)
ReplyDeleteTruck, we're glad you're here. Thank YOU. (And you too Z2!)
ReplyDeleteHey ghost! Come up with a Burma Shave ad. I'll give you a few minutes to come up with a string.

I see you, RB. I hate it when there's a shiny new thread and I can't stay to play. I'll try to stop by the pub tonight.
ReplyDeleteum ... how come 3Wood is not listed as a contributor? ... is he going to have a regular column? ... and what are the contributors anyway? ... cuz I might be needing to pay someone off ...
ReplyDeleteThat's good z2. I like it.
ReplyDeleteTruck Monkey ... must disclose it ain't mine ... I ripped it ... see I said sad ... haha
ReplyDeleteLOL Z2 - the list is of Blogspot contributors...3wood is one, but we just haven't added him to the list (didn't think we'd be here nearly this long); he'll be managing his own forum on the new C2. Carl in Jersulem will be, as well, and so will Render.
ReplyDeleteHey CC.... When do we move to the new digs with all the cool bells and whistles? I can't wait.

ReplyDeleteThe Power of the Poor
with Hernando de Soto
To those who watch television in the developed world, there doesn't seem to be a better system on earth than the capitalist system. We are experiencing the longest economic expansion in modern history. Soviet Communism has been defeated.
But make no mistake, as we will demonstrate in this program, capitalism is surprisingly vulnerable. The moment of capitalism's greatest triumph is the moment of its greatest crisis, its “Moment of Truth.” In fact, capitalism is not working for the vast majority of humanity that lives on the planet. Two thirds of the world's population has been locked out of the global economy, forced to operate outside the rule of law, they have no legal identity, no credit, no capital, and thus no way to prosper. To unlock The Power of the Poor is to change the world. If we fail, these people will turn against capitalism as they have turned against other failed economic systems, and that could make for a very difficult, violent time.
Filmed on location from Latin America to Africa, The Power of the Poor will demonstrate how free markets, individual freedom and especially the right to property can transform the poor into the most powerful resource in the world. At its heart is the potential triumph of capitalism as a system.
Truck, we've got to find out from Bare. I've predicted it about five times and been off by weeks. I suck at this. : ) (Soon, though - we're in the test phase.)
ReplyDeleteI SAID "HI, CC!"
ReplyDeleteDon't make me ban you. I'll ban you. You wanna be banned, I'll ban you. I'll ban you right now.
New healthcare bill won’t hurt deficit. What about your wallet?
ReplyDeleteThe CBO score doesn’t measure the fiscal impact on families, businesses, healthcare providers, or state and local governments. What will happen to them if the bill’s new mandates, fees, taxes, and penalties become law?
Whatcha gonna do for pretty pictures when you ban me? ; )
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I missed your hello. I saw something about a cloak, and that's it.
HELLO, Bare, my BFF and benevolent dictator of C2. : )
In answer to the question - I am in testing mode, making tweaks here and there, hopeing to get it to "official" testing phase ASAP... I could see that being just a few days for the "official" test phase.
ReplyDeleteSo, the answer is: soon.
JCM.. on PBS? It's a trick, right?
ReplyDeleteWhatcha gonna do for pretty pictures when you ban me? ; )
ReplyDeleteI already have plenty of pictures of you. So there.
HELLO, Bare, my BFF and benevolent dictator of C2. : )
Oh, I'm supposed to be benevolent? Damn, that kinda ruins the fun, but oooookay. Fine. Whatever you say.
At this point I could almost go for Hillary as the president. At least I think she would govern as if she had a passing interest in this country.

That's easy. Less discretionary spending by consumers, higher unemployment and less revenue for Uncle Sugar's coffers.
Evening/afternoon folks. Anything I should know about?
ReplyDeleteTruck Monkey,
ReplyDeleteI think she would have followed closer to Bill and governed from the middle with her eye out on 2012. Obama doesn't seem to give a rat's ass if democrats lose in 2010 and 2012.
So much for me being stuck in the 70's.

We got snow today about 2,000 ft above town. That's the best kind. I can see it, I can drive to it in a half hour but I don't have to shovel it.
Blogspot is creeping me out.
ReplyDeleteI refreshed and lost 2 comments, refreshed again and they were back.
Can someone to tell DEZ to quit jiggling the handle ?

Yeah, we here in CT got Seattle's weather this summer. Fortunately it was spread out, for the most part, not all at once.
ReplyDeletebut I had to put pontoons on my riding mower.
ReplyDeleteCan I tell you how sick I am of cutting the fucking grass this year ?
It's been ridiculous. I quit cutting the back, pay a guy $25 to cut it. DIE GRASS DIE !!
Wendy, I am not worried about flooding at my house, but some of the roads to work may be a major problem.

ReplyDeleteJust concrete it, then paint it green.
ReplyDeleteDon't think it hasn't crossed my mind.
The front I don't mind. I'm a bit picky about it.

We're considered the high desert. We actually have ski resorts here. Taos Ski Valley is one of the nation's best kept secrets.
We're having a sort of little dinner -- good bakery bread, various cheeses, fruit, a bit of prociutto.

Dang. Now I'm hungry. Gotta go get dinner started. See y'all later.
ReplyDeleteThat painting in the Obama collection, which turns out to be a ripoff of a Matisse collage, reminds me of the bad "Indian art" by Ward Churchill. He took some established artists work, copied it, reversed it left to right, recolored it, and signed his name to it.
ReplyDeleteCorrespondence Committee said...
ReplyDeleteFunny you should ask. I saw the story and called the wife into the room. She knew nothing of the context (though Alma Thomas is represented in one of the courses she's teaching this semester), and I asked her if she considered A to be a copy of B. She looked at it (sensing a trick question I guess) and said "absolutely. It's a copy." Then she read the article/comments.
Her "professional opinion" is that Alma needed some cash near the end of her career and churned this one out, pulling in some extra money. Not unusual for artists, but not scrupulous either.
The Obama's? I'm sure they were as ignorant of it's provenance as they are of everything else. Maybe Barry just liked the pretty colors.
