Afternoon Open and Policy Re-Post

The Pub is going to open at 5:00PM PST/8:00PM EST today. We thought it would be a good idea to re-post a few thoughts on our policy for those who haven't had a chance to see it...otherwise, here's a free-for-all for you to continue talking about today's news and sharing your own links.

And now for that policy re-post thingy:

We've had a couple of questions about our policy and where the line is. They're very good questions, as we realize the line isn't always clear. Maybe some explanation of the spirit of the policy will help:

We really are seeking to move forward. Staying in the past, well...it's like looking too much into your rear-view mirror when you're driving. Just not a great idea. Or getting stuck in a muddy rut. It feels pretty good to get moving again. (Please note: we're not comparing anyplace or anyone to a muddy rut - we're talking about getting stuck in place, and being paralyzed there.)

That's what we want to do. Get moving again.

And here's the thing - out of thousands of posts, we've had to remove very few - we mean very few. We aren't counting, but it's probably been fewer than twenty. And of those, most have been very benign and well-meaning...but the reason we're removing even some benign comments is that we believe they could lead others to respond, and before long, that's what people are talking about.

So the bottom line is that we're seeking to keep everyone looking toward the road ahead while they're here - and if you say something that's benign on a topic we may be avoiding, it may very well be removed - but it's honestly not personal, and we ask that you please not take it that way. It's just for the purpose of moving the community forward and building our own identity. And please know this: we are tremendously grateful to this community for helping to make it a positive, friendly, and forward-looking place to visit. We're having a great time, and we hope you are too.

  2. I want to thank the administrators of the sight for making it a welcoming place. I like the forward looking aspect of it. Posting with such fine people that I've come to know over the years is great. Just like slipping on an old pair of shoes. I hope to continue contributing what little I can.

  13. Watch your upcoming PBS (yes that PBS) schedule.

    The Power of the Poor
    with Hernando de Soto

To those who watch television in the developed world, there doesn't seem to be a better system on earth than the capitalist system. We are experiencing the longest economic expansion in modern history. Soviet Communism has been defeated.

But make no mistake, as we will demonstrate in this program, capitalism is surprisingly vulnerable. The moment of capitalism's greatest triumph is the moment of its greatest crisis, its “Moment of Truth.” In fact, capitalism is not working for the vast majority of humanity that lives on the planet. Two thirds of the world's population has been locked out of the global economy, forced to operate outside the rule of law, they have no legal identity, no credit, no capital, and thus no way to prosper. To unlock The Power of the Poor is to change the world. If we fail, these people will turn against capitalism as they have turned against other failed economic systems, and that could make for a very difficult, violent time.

Filmed on location from Latin America to Africa, The Power of the Poor will demonstrate how free markets, individual freedom and especially the right to property can transform the poor into the most powerful resource in the world. At its heart is the potential triumph of capitalism as a system.

  16. New healthcare bill won’t hurt deficit. What about your wallet?

The CBO score doesn’t measure the fiscal impact on families, businesses, healthcare providers, or state and local governments. What will happen to them if the bill’s new mandates, fees, taxes, and penalties become law?

Party leaders raised the prospect of including such a tax during meetings with small groups of members on Wednesday night and again in the Thursday morning caucus meeting in the Capitol basement, Connolly said.

Leaving that meeting, both Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel suggested it was just an idea - and not yet an official part of the final House bill.

Funny you should ask. I saw the story and called the wife into the room. She knew nothing of the context (though Alma Thomas is represented in one of the courses she's teaching this semester), and I asked her if she considered A to be a copy of B. She looked at it (sensing a trick question I guess) and said "absolutely. It's a copy." Then she read the article/comments.

Her "professional opinion" is that Alma needed some cash near the end of her career and churned this one out, pulling in some extra money. Not unusual for artists, but not scrupulous either.
The Obama's? I'm sure they were as ignorant of it's provenance as they are of everything else. Maybe Barry just liked the pretty colors.
