C2 PREVIEW: Forum lineup, and "What the *bleep* is taking so long?"

Good afternoon, C2ers! We've had a lot of questions about the permanent home for C2, so we'd like to take a second to address a couple of them, and see if it might benefit everyone to have a visual to demonstrate what we're building.

Correspondence Committee will consist of nine, possibly ten forums (the eight you see here, plus one not formally announced, and one in the development stage), the primary one being the front page, The Daily Broadside. That's where you'll find the news and political discussion.

Then if you're in the mood to talk with others about the book you're currently reading, you can stop in The Hardcover Cafe, and participate there. If a discussion of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is more to your liking, you can stop in at Pi Guy's Time Capsules forum and see what's going on. Market talk can be found in All About the Benjamins, the forum 3Wood will be hosting. The Liberty Pub will operate pretty much as usual, but will expand to include sports talk. Carl in Jersualem will be keeping you up-to-date on news in the Friends of Israel forum, and as we recently announced, Render will be managing Home of the Brave, with contributions from Army Wife (a new detail we very happily just worked out).

So you can see why we're so busy. We didn't intend to be at Blogspot so long, but we want to make sure everything is functioning well and is shiny and new for your arrival, and it's a web development project and this is just kind of how things go (our opening date has been pushed back a few times; we only opened up here in mid-September, so I guess it hasn't been that long...Blogspot just makes it FEEL like it ; ) - but we'll get you in as soon as we can. We just wanted to give you a chance to visualize what's going on over here, and let you know we appreciate your patience. After seeing how it's gone opening the Blogspot site up as a temporary home, we're pretty excited about the community you're all building with us...and we're as ready as you are to move, but we thank you for understanding the delay.

We'll try to field some questions here, but otherwise please consider it an open afternoon thread while we score up the latest news stories for the Afternoon News Dump thread.

You guys are the best!

  4. Sounds excellent. One question though, I am very much enjoying the back and forth that you can only get with @ 1 or 2 comments/min. and it keeps getting better every day with the evening threads flying right along. Will this dilute that concept or do you see the "front page" thread staying the main hang-out? Thanks for putting this together, all of you.

  5. NASA Space Telescope Discovers Largest Ring Around Saturn

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has discovered an enormous ring around Saturn -- by far the largest of the giant planet's many rings.

The new belt lies at the far reaches of the Saturnian system, with an orbit tilted 27 degrees from the main ring plane. The bulk of its material starts about six million kilometers (3.7 million miles) away from the planet and extends outward roughly another 12 million kilometers (7.4 million miles). One of Saturn's farthest moons, Phoebe, circles within the newfound ring, and is likely the source of its material.

Saturn's newest halo is thick, too -- its vertical height is about 20 times the diameter of the planet. It would take about one billion Earths stacked together to fill the ring.

  13. Spenser - good question. We figure some forums will be busier than others - some may even be very slow, and that's okay with us. We imagine that the news forum will be the busiest during the day, but it will probably slow down in the evening just naturally, when people will probably make their way over to the Pub section.

One of the things we're planning is a feed on each page, so you can see, no matter where you are on the site, when something new pops up in news or another forum.

Eventually we expect to have quite a few people in C2, so we aren't terribly worried about it being too slow, though it might be slower than what you're used to at first.

In other words, we think we know what will happen, but we'll see. : )

When it was first introduced back in the old days at LGF, I was agin' it. I thought it would turn threads into a popularity contest, with posters too focused on gaining "applause". And yes, there is some element of that. But on the whole, I like upding (and maybe even downding), since it more closely approximates in-person conversation, in which you can signal your approval or disapproval of what someone is saying through non-verbal means.

Obama turning to Hollywood for health reform help

President Barack Obama is enlisting Hollywood celebrities including actress Rosario Dawson and musician Will.I.Am to draw attention to his health care overhaul agenda.

The performers will act as celebrity judges for a TV commercial contest set up by Organizing for America, the Obama political organization that's part of the Democratic National Committee.

Organizing for America last month invited supporters to create and submit 30-second ads in support of remaking health care. The winning one will be aired nationally.

  35. Please wrap duct tape around your head before reading this idiot's response to my post on my denomination's "justice seekers" site...

"The Muslims did NOT tear down the temple. The Romans destroyed it when they leveled Jerusalem in 70 AD.

In fact, I do not know of a single instance where they tore down a religious building belonging to Jews or Christians. The Qoran tells Muslims to protect the "People of the Book." When the Muslims got there and began to construct the Dome of the Rock, the mount was little more than a trash heap.

As far as the importance of Jerusalem in Islam:
Muslims began praying towards Jerusalem. It was only after Mohammed had been in Medina for a few years that he received the revelation that they should pray towards Mecca.
Also, Mohammed made a midnight trip to the temple mount (the place where Abraham went with the purpose of sacrificing his son) and from there, he ascended to heaven.

There is no doubt that Jerusalem is the third holiest site in Islam.

Regarding Jewish rights to go onto the temple mount, the national rabbis of Israel have forbidden Jews from setting foot on the temple mount for fear that they might inadvertently walk through the Holy of Holies.

You must view the Muslim reaction in the light of their feeling of marginalization. They are being pushed out of the city by racially based distribution of building permits, bulldozing of homes and general intimidation. Broadly speaking, Israeli policies in the Old City amount to nothing short of ethnic cleansing. The mosques on the Temple Mount are the last bastion for many of these people. It is the one thing that they feel in control of. Can you blame them if they respond negatively when religious nuts threaten their shrine? There have been more than one attempt to blow up the site for the rebuilding of the temple."

Yes, I have mixed feelings about the up/down dings (also see OR's comment above). Think that in many ways it can devolve into a popularity/unpopularity contest, as opposed to agree/disagree. However, I expect (hope) that the conversations here remain civil, and not become like the old CNN Crossfire show.

Also agree with not displaying sign-up dates. Creates an artificial sense of superiority among some folks (not singling anyone out - here or anywhere else).

and now for something completely different.......

The Koran is false and I can prove it.

Surrah IX verse 30 says: The Jews say (Uzair) Ezra is the Son of G-d.

The problem for Islam is that is factually false. Not true. Full stop, never happened. Now Islam holds the Koran to be the work of the Creator, immutable and set in stone. How did He get something so obviously wrong? So how do you tell Muslims their beloved and presumed to be perfect book has a glaring factual mistake? Best to say that the time has come to worry more about the spirit of the Koran and how mankind deals with life in the days in which we now live; the just and rational interpretation of the law is as important as the law itself.

But Jews never worshipped Ezra; there is no historical evidence of this whatsoever. I guess G-d can use Taquiya, but why would he ever want to not share the full truth with Muslims and what possible benefit can there be to factual error in a "perfect" book.

House Republicans refused to accept defeat of the resolution, and asked for a second recorded vote following the first. The reading of the resolution was interrupted several times, and at one point was challenged by Democrats before being put to a vote.

A representative from Rangel's office on Wednesday blasted the resolution as a "highly partisan effort."

"Let's look at this resolution for what it really is -- a highly partisan effort designed to undermine the important work in Congress on health care reform,"

    OLT, how do you dress???

    Average day at work:
"Gimme" polo shirts with the company logo somewhere, because they were free
    Costco jeans (big spender)
"Athletic" shoes (har har) or steel-toed brogans

As far as a lab goes, I'm a real snappy lookin' guy.

  124. We'll try to field some questions here

    Why is there air?

Simply stunning work all you gals and guys have done CC. The artwork alone is impressive. The ideas of these forums is great, people won't get drowned out by chatter. I want to second that suggestion about a science forum, I bet you it would be frequented by many people.
