C2 PREVIEW: Yes, Virginia, there really IS a website.

As promised, I took a few screen shots of the new C2 for you all to see today. Clearly some of these are just partial shots of the browser window, and the Friends of Israel forum shot is of the empty forum (waiting for a walk through by Carl in Jersualem, its manager), but this will give you an idea of what your new home will look like. (Click on each image to enlarge; these images won't open in a new window - I got lazy - so hit your "back" button to come back here, or just right click on each one to select open in a new window.)

If you like what you see, please give Running Bare a "Great job!", a handshake, a pat on the head, a lick on the face - whatever you prefer (or whatever he'll allow you to do); he's typed thousands and thousands of little characters into a development environment to create this, and we are really digging the result.

For about a week, we'll be testing/experimenting with staff, and unless they find some serious bugs, we should be moving in shortly after. We're planning to stay here for the coming week - Pi Guy has created a very entertaining series of Halloween Pub threads (for the entire week!) and we may as well enjoy them here - but The Plan™, as it stands, is to move in right after that.

This seems a good time to thank you all for being such great commenters, and for your practically flawless cooperation with our policies. A big thanks, also, is due the C2 staff of contributors, moderators, and "wenches" - you all, as a community, have made this a most enjoyable experience for us.

Feel free to ask questions, and we'll try to field them this afternoon.

Viva C2!

  1. Yep, we're spending the week of devils and ghosts on blogspot, and then moving around All Saints Day.

    How appropriate.

  2. Just a quick suggestion.... I don't know what the current status is, but I like a new browser tab/window to open from links embedded in posts.

That way I don't lose my place in a thread when I absent mindedly close the browser/tab.

  3. So Running Bare has been working in the lab late at night
Next week, our eyes will behold an eerie sight
As the website from the screen begins to rise

  4. Time to run... so I leave you with this charming little ditty about our beloved leader... Kiss Me Son of God:

  6. Hey CC looks great. Can't wait. I feel like I am a teenager again, trying to get a peek in the girls locker room.

  7. I will see if the text editor on the new site supports that, eschew; here, I ordinarly put it in the code myself when I'm creating a thread (and I do it every time unless I forget), and you can't do it in the comment window - so yeah, I like that too.

  8. ETR, turn - LOL

We're excited to get you in there. And that is NOT A BOXING GLOVE. LMAO

Last time I was on there, the text editor did allow for the option of links that open in a new window. However, it is up to the individual poster.

  10. Looks very nice. I see the various forums will be listed under Townhall, but will there be specific topics of the day listed or do we just pop in, check it out and it is kind of loosly structured?

    ReplyDelete
  11. CC, no geek forum? dang, maybe later. What is ETR?

  12. Very excited.
    Looks great.
Sorry I will be traveling from Sunday PM to Friday PM, missing fun pub threads. Ah well, it's a living.

    Kosh's Shadow says -
I agree, but Blogspot won't accept the necessary html when I tried it (you put target="_blank" after the url and before the closing angle bracket). I tried, blogspot won' let me.

Well, here's the link I was going to give

Just remember - right click the link, and select "Open in new tab" or "open in new window"

I think we should *punish* Running Bare by putting him in a tight-fitting Lassie costume and making him eat from a monogrammed dog dish.

  15. LOL turn. Was that a brain fart I just heard?

  16. snowcrash, there will be multiple threads all going on at the same time, forum-wide. The Daily Broadside, which is the news forum, will be the primary focus - but if you want to go talk about whatever issue Pi Guy puts up in Time Capsules, for example, that will be available to you.

    Does that make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, I'm slipping a bit. ha. Great work running bare!

  18. turn - the "geek" forum is definitely on the table, as is a law forum.

  20. Civet coffee

Estimated price per pound: $110 and up
This rare coffee has the dubious distinction of being consumed before the customer has even taken a sip. The palm civet, a cat-like animal also called a luwak, ingests fresh coffee cherries but doesn't digest the beans inside. After the beans pass through the civet's digestive system, workers collect them and wash them in spring water. Supposedly, the civet's digestive enzymes make the beans less acidic, improving the coffee's flavor.

    Cat like? Hmmm.

  22. A difference between the new site, and BlogSpot, is that in the comments box, I allow you to specify opening a link in a new window. This is because I dont' make you handcode the limited HTML tags - there are buttons and tools for that in a handly little toolbar. You dont even have to type 'target="_blank"' anymore. Just select the "Open link in new window option" :)

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Bare kicks ass. : ) (I'll give you a little background on some of the stuff he's worked on in the past in a minute.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. How about a pun forum? just kidding ...

    ReplyDelete
  25. O/R, yes, MANLY!! LOL (I figured you'd pick the handshake option, but you always surprise me. : )

  27. I'm sorry, turn, there won't be karma. We considered it, but we think it's detrimental to the level playing field we're hoping to achieve. For that same reason, there won't be visible sign up dates, either - we really want everyone to feel like their voice is as important as anyone else's. Make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  28. turn, a funny thing happened on the way to the pun forum.

wft have I been missing? I've never typed that and it must be some direct pointer to Obama or something.

    ReplyDelete
  32. All kidding aside, I offer this (laurel and) hearty handshake, to Running Bare, Correspondence Committee, and all the Founding Parents of C2.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, like my grandfather used to say,

"You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose. But you can't wipe your friends on the couch."

I think that's what he said. Or maybe it was "WOOWOOWOOWOOWOOWOOWOO!!!!"

    Either way.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thank you so much for making this happen!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Make sense?

I guess so, but IMO it really isn't a level playing filed when it comes to the caliber of posts from some really intelligent and talented people here. I've always used updings in recognition of that. However, a lack of karma will not diminish that fact.

    ReplyDelete
  36. In addition to the "Quote" and "Reply" options, I added one teensy tiny thing - if you dont' want to quote the entirety of someone's comment, simply highlight the portion you do want to quote, and click the quote button - it will then only quote that part. :)

Oh, I know what you mean and I feel the same - but you can let them know with a commment of your own (as I'm sure you have done and will continue to do)...we've just seen so much piling on (with the downdings) with the karma system; it's not the positive we're concerned with as much as it is the negative. We've seen a lot of very neutral, benign comments really discouraged on other forums, and we want to avoid that.

    Thanks for understanding.

  41. Damn, talk about your cutting edge health care. I Had to go to the doctor today before they would renew the prescription for my BP medication, kind of like a hostage situation. 53. Will the comments be numbered?

    Yes.

Now, to explain - there IS paging there. 50 comments per page, much like Hot Air and some other places. It keeps the thread from getting too slow etc... The Paging is very obvious - you can't miss it.

So, each comment is numbered in the Page.CommentNumber fashion - so, the 15th comment on page 2 would be 2.15 etc...

    Does that make sense?

  68. The old Yahoo Boards allowed for up-dings, but not down-dings.

I liked to use them as "Ditto" and "Right-on!"

The negative aspects of the down-dings can be unpleasant. I will not miss them.

Maybe you have already mentioned it above, maybe you already do this, but I think it would be good to close comments on each thread after 24-hours. I think that would help prevent some of the agent provocateur BS that I saw from elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I hope so, eschew! We don't want to see well-meaning people just offering their opinions buried in a sea of red minus signs, you know? Anything bad enough (something racist, for example) to deserve that will be removed, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Syrah, perhaps after we open registration to the public, that will be necessary. Right now, it will be invited members only (everyone here and a few more, as I understand it - Pink is handling all that, and realwest has done an excellent job assisting in that process, I should say), so we expect moderation to be a breeze over there.

There will also be a button on each comment so anyone can alert the moderators to it.

Exactly. A successful blog depends on readers, contributors, and commenters - without them, you have nothing.

  118. Are we going to make war on other blogs?

/lots of cheap threads to be had

True. But if you've seen their camp followers, which we'd end up saddled with, you'd change your mind real quick.

  119. No, K/B, we aren't. : ) (Ha! You're on staff, and an expert on C2 policy...this is obviously a TEST. : )

Other blogs might make war on us, but we aren't going to respond in kind. We've got better things to do, know what I mean, Jelly Bean?

  120. Oh, good. We will be discouraging dissing the Green Bay Packers, of course.

    Can we diss Brett Farve?

    /We'll never forget you, Brent.

  121. New thread coming up pretty soon. I can't even remember what it's about. I'd better go look.

    Ahem.

As Running Bare once some weeks ago so appropriately stated that, IIRC: 'I have long outlived my high school schoolyard fights'.

  125. Wow! Looks great. Running Bare - good work, looks like you've been a tad busy. Can't wait for the new digs and I sincerely hope there are minimal technical difficulties.

Great job to everyone and thank you for this forum!

  126. I don't want to go to war with anyone.

But that being said, I am a great fan of disproportionate reaction.

War is not for the dainty.

  127. Hi Cal, what time is it where you are? Has to be very late, but its still FRIDAY night right?

  128. You're very welcome, Russkilitlover - we're very happy you've joined us. (And I can't think of a single exception in that regard - every one of you has been awesome over here.)

  129. Via Instaman: Jonah Goldberg on the new calls for civility in politics. “What strikes me as truly uncivil is the effort to demonize critics of the president with racial bullying. In fact, I think Obama really does have a problem with dissent. . . . On health care he’s been saying the time for debating his plan is over, even though the president didn’t even have a plan to debate.”

  131. Hi snowcrash, it is just past midnight. And yes I am a time-shiftedly challenged person.
In order to meet my friends from across the pond I needed to enhance my night-owl abilities and fashion my daily wake and sleep phases very irregularly.

Being in the Pacific Northwet, I have to ask - what is this "sun" thing, of which you speak?

  135. New thread in about two minutes...John McWhorter on African-American studies programs. I don't know if anyone is in the mood to discuss something like that, but if not, the Pub will be up at the usual time (and just turn the next one into an open thread if you like).

We'll leave this one open so we can keep answering quetions though. (I'll be away from my computer for a little bit, but I'll check back.)

Isn't there some school of self-defense that utilizes that (I'm thinking Israeli, but I'm usually wrong)?

Halloween is a pretty new phenomenon here in Germany. The party part of it has already reached us but the trick or treat thing has eluded the Germans so far.
Btw. I am just now emptying a bag of M&M's. ;-)
