Big Hollywood: CAIR Seeks HBO Apology for ‘Curb’ Episode Mocking Jesus

A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called on HBO to apologize for an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in which the main character splattered urine on a painting of Jesus.

Honduras interim government touts agreement on coup

Interim President Roberto Micheletti has ordered his negotiators to sign an agreement that could lead to the reinstatement of ousted President Manuel Zelaya, but that leaves the decision in the hands of the Supreme Court and Congress.

Micheletti says the agreement would create a power-sharing government and bind both sides to recognize the Nov. 29 presidential elections.

Zelaya's team is not saying whether it intends to sign the agreement, which Micheletti called a "significant concession" on his part.

So-Called 'Death Panel' Measure Survives in House Health Bill

The Medicare end-of-life planning provision that 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin said was tantamount to "death panels" for seniors is staying in the latest Democratic health care bill unveiled Thursday.

The provision allows Medicare to pay for voluntary counseling to help beneficiaries deal with the complex and painful decisions families face when a loved one is approaching death.

Passports Linked to 9/11 Found in Pakistan

Soldiers displayed passports seized in the operation, among them a German document belonging to a man named Said Bahaji. That matches the name of a man thought to have been a member of the Hamburg cell that conceived the 9/11 attacks. Bahaji is believed to have fled Germany shortly before the attacks in New York and Washington.

The passport included a tourist visa for Pakistan and a stamp indicating he'd arrived in the southern city of Karachi on Sept. 4, 2001.

Another passport, from Spain, bears the name of Raquel Burgos Garcia. Spanish media have reported that a woman with the same name is married to Amer Azizi, an alleged Al Qaeda member from Morocco suspected in both the 9/11 attacks and the Madrid train bombings in 2004.

Congressman Flake Releases Statement Regarding His Vote Against Honoring the 2560th Birthday of Confucius (H/T: Pi Guy)

Washington, D.C., Oct 28 - Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, today released the following statement regarding his vote against H.Res.784, a bill “honoring the 2560th anniversary of the birth of Confucius and recognizing his invaluable contributions to philosophy and social and political thought.”

“He who spends time passing trivial legislation may find himself out of time to read healthcare bill,” said Flake.

  2. Good morning everyone - just a quick visit to pass this along.

US wind energy stimulus cash creates jobs overseas

More than eight out of 10 US stimulus dollars spent on wind energy farms have gone to foreign companies, according to a report by the Washington-based Investigative Report Workshop, a non-profit journalist group.

Of the $1.05bn handed out in grants so far - the majority since August - 84 per cent has gone to European companies, with the US subsidiary of Iberdrola Renewables, the Spanish company, taking the largest share.

Officials in Barack Obama's administration say the $22bn set aside in the $787bn stimulus for alternative energy funding is designed to create or retain jobs and stimulate economic activity. But the report, shared with the Financial Times, shows the majority of jobs are likely to have been created overseas.

The 11 US-based wind farms that received cash grants from the US Treasury have imported 695 of the 982 wind turbines that are to be installed. Since the manufacture of turbines is by far the largest employment generator in wind energy, it is estimated to have created 4,500 jobs overseas - far in excess of the jobs created in the US from these grants.

Although it's reprehensible, it's free speech and whether or not it's insulting to one group or another I don't want to get to the point where calling for an apology based on religious sensitivity morphs into legislation based on religious sensitivity.

I'd rather let the market take care of it and if people are really upset about it, make it known to the executives of HBO from a consumer perspective.

And Obama said, “Let there be stimulus,” and there was stimulus. And Obama saw that it was pork, and called it good; and Obama divided the deserving from the undeserving. And Obama called the deserving Democrats, and the undeserving he called Republicans. And there was a Congressional recess, the first time.

Gov't says stimulus saved or created 650,000 jobs

About 650,000 jobs have been saved or created under President Barack Obama's economic stimulus plan, the White House said Friday, saying it is on track to reach the president's goal of 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year.

New job numbers from businesses, contractors, state and local governments, nonprofit groups and universities were scheduled to be released publicly later Friday. White House economic adviser Jared Bernstein said the figures will show that, when adding in jobs linked to $288 billion in tax cuts, the stimulus plan has created or saved more than 1 million jobs.

Not so fast..... The WH just got caught, and I mean YESTERDAY inflating the numbers.

STIMULUS WATCH: Stimulus jobs overstated in report

The AP reviewed a sample of federal contracts, not all 9,000 reported to date, and discovered errors in one in six jobs credited to the $787 billion stimulus program — or 5,000 of the 30,000 jobs claimed so far.

Divide the claims by six...... at least.

Hi there Russkilitlover - I can't really agree with you on that; HBO's free speech rights weren't affected and it was CAIR's free speech Rights which gave it the right to criticize HBO and ask for an apology (although I sincerely doubt CAIR cares about insults to Jesus Christ, but was looking for some good pr for a change!).

  42. Hey JCM - good morning to you! Doncha know that this is OBAMA'S New Math (from your link):

"Even in its limited review, the AP found job counts that were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of paid positions; jobs credited to the stimulus program that were counted two and sometimes more than four times; and other jobs that were credited to stimulus spending when none was produced.

    For example:

    • Some recipients of stimulus money used the cash to give existing employees pay raises, but each reported saving dozens of jobs with the money, including one Florida day care that claimed 129 jobs saved.

    • A Texas contractor whose business kept 22 employees to handle stimulus contracts saw its job count inflated to 88 because the same workers were counted four times.

    • The water department in Palm Beach County, Fla., hired 57 meter readers, customer service representatives and other positions to handle two water projects. But their total job count was incorrectly doubled to 114.

Those errors were included in an early progress report on the stimulus released two weeks ago that featured numerous mistakes, including a Colorado business' claim that its stimulus contract created more than 4,200 jobs. TeleTech Government Solutions actually hired 4,231 temporary workers for its stimulus project, but most of them worked for five weeks or less and the others no more than five months, company president Mariano Tan said.

The short-term positions should have been reported as 635 full-time, 40-hour-a-week jobs under the government's method of calculating stimulus work, Tan said."

If it's any consolation, I'll chime in with another Bizarro World comment. I can't go into any details, but suffice it to say; I recently saw an example of a project that's partially supported by the US government; one element of it had a sort of lefty-politicized component, which wasn't supposed to be there. The US government representatives in this project have actually been the most vocal about taking that component OUT, and ensuring the project remains non-politicized. So... two cheers, or at least one, for the Obama Administration, at least in this one, particular instance.

(Sorry my description has to necessarily be so vague.)

Thirty-nine percent (39%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -9 (see trends).

Fifteen percent (15%) say that Congress is doing a good or an excellent job while 53% rate Congressional performance as poor. Sixty-two percent (62%) believe that Congress pays more attention to the media than to voters.

Overall, 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) disapprove. Seventy-nine percent (79%) of Democrats approve while 81% of Republicans disapprove. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 43% offer a positive review and 57% say the opposite."

    Oh, my G-d.

First--stay away from Creative Commons, a leftist fraud designed to undermine copyright protection.

Second, while your work is covered by copyright as soon as it is "fixed," that copyright is completely unenforceable--that means you cannot sue for infringement if someone uses the work without permission, and even your ability to enforce a DMCA action against another website is circumscribed--if the work has not been registered with the US Copyright Office.

You can do this online, and there are ways to do this for both published and unpublished work which can gang the images up, which makes it cheaper to cover everything.

If you have any hope or intention of ever licensing it yourself, and you're putting your work out where people can steal it, you need to have the work protected by proper registration. A copyright notice does not provide protection, and is no substitute for registration--though it can be of use if the work is registered and you want to prove willfulness.

  67. Here are some healthcare figures for you.

    October 30, 2009
A comprehensive list of new taxes in health care bill
    Rick Moran
Sorry this took a while, but the excellent folks at Americans for Tax Reform had to plow through 1990 pages of health care reform in order to find all the little golden nuggets that will make the tax man jump for joy.

Ryan Ellis reports that ATR has discovered no less than 13 new taxes in the bill. Among them:

Employer Mandate Excise Tax (Page 275): If an employer does not pay 72.5 percent of a single employee's health premium (65 percent of a family employee), the employer must pay an excise tax equal to 8 percent of average wages. Small employers (measured by payroll size) have smaller payroll tax rates of 0 percent (<$500,000), 2 percent ($500,000-$585,000), 4 percent ($585,000-$670,000), and 6 percent ($670,000-$750,000).
Individual Mandate Surtax (Page 296): If an individual fails to obtain qualifying coverage, he must pay an income surtax equal to the lesser of 2.5 percent of modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) or the average premium. MAGI adds back in the foreign earned income exclusion and municipal bond interest.
Medicine Cabinet Tax (Page 324): Non-prescription medications would no longer be able to be purchased from health savings accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs), or health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs). Insulin excepted.
Cap on FSAs (Page 325): FSAs would face an annual cap of $2500 (currently uncapped).
Increased Additional Tax on Non-Qualified HSA Distributions (Page 326): Non-qualified distributions from HSAs would face an additional tax of 20 percent (current law is 10 percent). This disadvantages HSAs relative to other tax-free accounts (e.g. IRAs, 401(k)s, 529 plans, etc.)
Denial of Tax Deduction for Employer Health Plans Coordinating with Medicare Part D (Page 327): This would further erode private sector participation in delivery of Medicare services.
Feel left out? Don't worry, there's plenty more where those came from.
Generally speaking, it appears that the burden will fall primarily on businesses. So instead of hiring someone to be productive, that money will go to the government instead.
This is a jobs killing bill as much as it is a power grab for control of the health care system. It shows just how far the Democrats are willing to go - delay or destroy any recovery - in order for government to get their hands on the health care system.

    ReplyDelete

There are also Canadian rights agencies which engage in collecting royalties for usage and which can be helpful should you wish to assert your authorship in a case of infringement.

The one area that will significantly affect individuals is cap for FSAs. I know a lot of people, especially those with kids, who swear by their FSAs and how much it helps them manage health care costs. Capping this is a direct slap at individual management of health care.

Here are some healthcare figures for you.

There is a tax on medical devices in there too.

    Who pays the taxes?

    CORPORATIONS DON'T PAY TAXES!

The might write the check, but it's just another cost that gets added to the cost of products.

The cost for medical devices is going up.

Medical devices under Medicare and Medicad are already hyper inflated. A device must be purchased from an approved provider. This process adds 100-200% to the cost.

Hey O.R. you said "From what I've heard, quite a lot of skinheads are no joke when it comes to a street fight. The guy is this video was phoney-tough, but it doesn't mean they all are." That is, of course, true but methinks there are few if any that could take Smith one on one - if you didn't notice it the first time, when Smith finally has enough, he gives the Yoob a RAPID left right to the Carotid arteries - guaranteed to make you lose oxygen by briefly stopping blood flow to the brain; that's why the Yoob was staggering when he finally got up and staggered away. He'd actually been unconscious for about a second or so.
The only thing that pissed me off was that I think Smith was too patient; that Yoob gave him a two handed shove two or three times and otherwise was PHYSICALLY abusive before Smith took him out.

  88. CA searchers scour for survivors of midair crash

Aircraft and ships are scouring the ocean off San Diego for any signs of survivors of a nighttime collision of a Coast Guard C-130 airplane and a Marine Corps attack helicopter.

A crew of seven was aboard the airplane and two were aboard the helicopter when the aircraft collided Thursday night 50 miles west of the San Diego County coast and 15 miles east of San Clemente Island, a Navy training site.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Levi Read says the search is focused on the area of a debris field.

Read says that at the time of the crash, the C-130 was searching for a man in a skiff who was reported missing out of Los Angeles.

The Camp Pendleton-based AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter was on a training mission.

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, there aren't any escape systems on either aircraft. The -130 might have chutes on board, but they aren't worn as a matter of course.

Seems 'the deal' is both sides accepting a November 29 election. Everything I know says Zelaya (the ousted nutcase) cannot win a free and fair election. 109. et: Zelaya is not even supposed to be RUNNING on Nov. 29... constitutionally barred. Which, of course, is how the fracas started in the first place, as he tried to use Chavez-esque tactics to change that. From what I'm seeing, the deal does NOT allow him on the ballot on 11/29.

    ReplyDelete
  110. experiencedtraveller - "Interim President Roberto Micheletti has ordered his negotiators to sign an agreement that could lead to the reinstatement of ousted President Manuel Zelaya, but that leaves the decision in the hands of the Supreme Court and Congress."

Of course the problem for Zeyala (and naturally Obama) is that it was the duly elected Congress that said NO to Zeyala's bid to become another Hugo Chavez and that Congress sent it to the Honduran Supreme Court that said - "Zeyala's out" and ordered the military to escort him out of Honduras. I'm not so sure that Micheletti is betting on there even being a November 29 election with Zeyala on the ballot.
