Daily Broadside - TGIF Edition

Well, good morning everyone. It's Friday, the sun is shining, the birds are sin... oh who am I kidding. It's gray, overcast, and raining here in the Pacific Northwet. Things are finally back to normal. Which is good because frankly I've had it up to here with that whole "sunny" thing.

So, I'm sure Sarah Palin is chuckling to herself this morning, if she were the kind of person who enjoyed the misfortunes of others, but I don't think she is so nevermind. But, I'm sure she is, however, feeling vindicated for the decision to keep her daughters away from David Letterman. Remember when his show used to be funny? No? Me neither.

However, in honor of Mr. Letterman's latest confessional, I present to you the C2 Top Ten List, The Top Ten List Letterman should have done:

10: "It wasn't my fault, they all had that slutty flight attendant look!"
9: "You'd screw around, too, if your wife looked like Bill Paxton!"
8: "If you work for me, you go up and down more times than a whores nightgown."
7: "Hey, I'm not Bill O'Reilly - I never used a Falafal on them!"
6: "I just wanted to make sure that Viagra Prescription was working, and it wasn't a placebo."
5: "I've committed adultery in my heart many times."
4: "The fundamentals of my love life are strong."
3: "Give a woman an inch, and she wants the other two."
2: "This was a huge sacrifice for me! As much of a sacrifice as a trip to Europe on the taxpayer's dime!"
1. "I was thinking about Obama the whole time!"

But no, instead he wimps out: Letterman addresses extortion attempt - although, the "check for two million dollars" that the guy from 48 Hours agreed to accept thing was kind of funny.

Anyway, here is some other news with which to start your day:

Reid: Final health bill will have a 'public option'

Democrats Quietly Craft 'Public Option' Compromise Behind Closed Doors

Obama appointee lauded NAMBLA figure

And with that, dear friends, let the Friday Morning Festivities commence!

UPDATE: After sacrificing so greatly, Michelle Obama will return home today, deeply saddened as Chicago was eliminated from contention in the first round of voting. Obama, meanwhile, was spotted wandering around aimlessly, seeking just a smidgen of success in his presidency.

UPDATE MKII: For the first time, the Olympic Games will be held in South America. Rio wins. Brazilians for everyone! On the house!

  11. Speech on Afghanistan
    By Gen. Stanley McChrystal

    International Institute for Strategic Studies
    London, United Kingdom

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/10/01/gen_mcchrystals_address_on_afghanistan_98537.html

"...some generally accepted truths about Afghanistan, which we all know to be true:

*It is a graveyard of empires.
*Afghanistan has never been ruled by a strong central government.
*Afghans do not consider themselves Afghans.

    All three are untrue."

  12. Hi Bare! Well you put up this very funny (well, except for the NAMBLA connection) thread JUST IN TIME to prevent some folks, especially
Robomonkey from seeing my response to him on the last thread. SO I'm repeating it!

"robomonkey - well if you insist in putting it in refined language, I guess that is what I'm saying.
EXCEPT - that the decision to wage war in Afghanistan was already made by the duly elected civilians who are supposed to do that. This current POTUS owes campaign debts to the extreme Left in this country and my fear is that he'll call the whole war OFF if he's convinced that Al-Quadea is no longer a threat to us, whereas the war in Afghanistan was STARTED by duly elected Civilain authorites who UNDERSTOOD what was at stake; it's just jaw dropping to me that Obama could "forget" how 9/11 occured and that it wouldn't have been possible without the Taliban "governing" or at least being the government of Afghanistan; but his LEFTIST supporters take that exact position. Bush understood that quite well. That little bit of information kept us safe from another 9/11 type tragedy.
Putting the USA at graver risk than it might otherwise be at, to satisfy a campaign debt is absloutely criminal.

  13. I apologize for being "refined", something I'm not normally accused of; it was more my intention to put things in general terms so that parallels could be drawn to JFK screwing up the Bay of Pigs, LBJ screwing up Vietnam, Carter micromanaging and screwing up pretty much everything, and so on.

  23. Hey Kenneth - thanks for posting that - I'm gonna read it when I get the chance!

Meanwhile, Rasmussen has some interesting findings:

    Importance of Issues
Government Ethics Edges Out Economy As Top Issue Among Voters
    Thursday, October 01, 2009
For nearly two years, economic issues have held the top spot in terms of importance among voters.
But the latest national telephone survey shows that 83% now view government ethics and corruption as very important, placing it just ahead of the economy on a list of 10 key electoral issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports. Eighty-two percent (82%) of voters see the economy as very important.

This is the first time since October 2007 that voters have rated ethics and corruption as more important than the economy. Voters viewed the two issues evenly in November and December 2007 before placing a higher priority on the economy starting in January 2008.

While Republicans and voters not affiliated with either party rank ethics and corruption as the most important issue, Democrats put health care at the top of the list.
Seventy-three percent (73%) of all voters view health care as very important, up one point from last month and the highest level measured in over two years.

But just 41% of voters nationwide now favor the health care reform plan proposed by Obama and congressional Democrats, the lowest level of support measured so far.

Another shift this month came on national security and the War on Terror, an issue viewed as very important to 67% of voters. That’s a six-point jump from last month and puts the issue in fourth place on the list.
Americans are closely divided over whether the United States should send more troops to fight the war in Afghanistan.
Recent polling shows that just 30% of U.S. voters have at least some confidence in the ability of the United Nations to combat terrorism. At the same time, only 12% of voters believe the United States should be the world’s policeman.

The majority of voters (51%) say the president is not being aggressive enough in dealing with Iran's controversial nuclear program.

  25. Phil,

Yes, it's a good speech, the plain truth. I love his closing paragraph:

"I am exceptionally proud to serve at ISAF. Within my office, I have a picture of a British battle group, led by Lieutenant Colonel Gus Fair, with whom I worked for a long time in Iraq. He is with his soldiers, who I had the opportunity to speak with when I visited them during operations in Spin Majid this summer in the Helmand River valley. I keep that picture because, when I looked into their eyes, which were bloodshot with fatigue, I remember the extraordinary professionalism, competence and sheer courage of those young men. Whenever I come to London, I like to run through the city, and I particularly like the statues that you have erected to heroes. I hope that you erect one to that generation – they have earned it."

Yet sadly, I doubt very much the Britain of today will raise a monument to their soldiers who served so bravely in Iraq & Afghanistan.

Which makes me ask: Is there such a monument planned for our Canadian troops? There damn well should be. With your contacts in the Forces, are you aware of any such memorial being raised?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well y'all it's been a great deal of fun and very educational for me out here today, but I'm afraid I have to leave now.

Not that I am aware of at the moment. I have been a little out of contact with my army friends. Besides that decision is more political then military. I would like to see main cenotaphs updated with Afghanistan and United Nations Peacekeeping service. As well most memorials are usually built a couple years after a war has ended. I wish I could make the Rememberance Day parade this year. Last year I went and was saddened by the amount of WW2 and Korean vets that were there. I remember back in the day when in my home town there would be over 100 on parade. Last year they had enough for a colour party and one platoon of both groups. Those generations are dying off fast now.

  82. With the stunning news that Olympic officials had swiftly rejected Chicago as host the 2016 Olympics, despite a personal, last-minute appeal from President Obama, the White House was left Friday with the immediate and difficult challenge of explaining what happened.

Did the president falter by making remarks that were emotional and personal, rather than giving specifics about his adopted home town? Is the defeat a sign that Obama's global popularity has begun to wane?

White House advisers -- many of them Chicago natives, with a personal stake in the bid -- rushed into the back recesses of the West Wing to digest the outcome, and then emerged, looking glum, to comment.

    (from Talk Left):

The 2016 Olympics will not be taking place in Chicago. The city has been eliminated from consideration in the first round of voting. President Obama was flying back to the U.S. when the vote took place.

Chicago spent $50 million on the failed bid. The delegation was led by Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, with a personal visit by President Obama. Did our over-strict airport policies play a role in the rejection?[More...]

In the official question-and-answer session following the Chicago presentation, Syed Shahid Ali, an I.O.C. member from Pakistan, asked the toughest question. IT'S MICHAEL JORDAN'S FAULT!

The Daley Plaza crowd reacted to Chicago's elimination in silence. Some members of the crowd were crying as they walked away. People blamed negative media attention on the bid and former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan's lack of participation as reasons for the loss.
"We weren't unified as a city. We didn't get behind this enough," said Rob Fox of Chicago.

"Michael Jordan didn't show up," said Margaret Johnson of Chicago. "His city asked him for help and he turned his back on us."

  143. From Salon:

Chicago loses Olympics bid; conservatives rejoice

It's not often that conservatives celebrate the U.S. losing out to countries like Brazil and Spain, especially not when the loss involves a prominent event like the Summer Olympics. But when the International Olympic Committee eliminated Chicago as a potential host for the 2016 games in the first round of voting on Friday, the right broke out the champagne.

Chicago's attempt to secure the Olympics had become a partisan fight with the entrance of President Obama into his adopted hometown's efforts. Obama had flown to Copenhagen, where the vote was held, in order to lobby for Chicago, and from the moment of the announcement he'd do so, his opponents had suddenly turned into die-hard foes of the idea of having the U.S. play host to the 2016 Summer Olympics. It had been a crusade for the Drudge Report all week, and people like Glenn Beck and Michelle Malkin had happily joined in.

So when news of Chicago's loss came in, the response was swift, and joyful. Drudge's banner headline (screenshot above) read, "World rejects Obama: Chicago out in first round. The ego has landed." On the Weekly Standard's blog, John McCormack wrote of the news, "Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters. " (The sentence was later removed from his post.) RedState's Erick Erickson wrote:

    Hahahahaha.

I thought the world would love us more now that Bush was gone.

I thought if we whored ourselves out to our enemies, great things would happen.

    Apparently not.

So Obama’s pimped us to every two bit thug and dictator in the world, made promises to half the Olympic committee, and they did not even kiss him.

So much for improving America’s standing in the world, Barry O.

A persistent theme in the taunts has been the suggestion that if Obama can't bring home the Olympics, he won't be able to rein in Iran, either. At the Corner, one of the National Review's blogs, John J. Miller wrote, "If he can't work his personal magic with the Olympians, why does he expect it to work with the Iranians?" Miller's colleague Ramesh Ponnuru quipped, "I'm sure that Obama will be a lot more persuasive with the Iranians."

Miller was on a similar wavelength with another poster at the Corner, Jonah Goldberg. At nearly the same time, the two joked that the IOC must be racist for voting Chicago out, mocking claims that opposition to Obama is motivated in part by race. "Frankly I am stunned that all my colleagues can do is score cheap political points against Obama's failed effort to win the Olympics for the United States. Where is the outrage at the IOC's transparent racism?" Goldberg wrote.

  152. From PajamasMedia:

Post Hoc Criticism of Obama’s Copenhagen Trip Justified

It would be easy to read too much into the rejection of Chicago as the site of the 2016 Summer Olympics despite the president’s personal lobbying junket to Copenhagen in order to plead the city’s case before a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

But neither should the president get a pass or an “A” for effort — or any other spin one wishes to put on the decision by the IOC to bypass Chicago as host for the games.

In a word, this is a disaster for the president.

“If he goes and does not bring home the Olympics, it’s going to be kind of a blow for him on the international stage where he is immensely popular, which is really the reason why they think it will help the bid for him to go,” said Kenneth Vogel, a senior reporter for Politico.

He placed the prestige of his presidency directly on the line and failed. That’s the bottom line. He gambled with the one thing no president should ever gamble with unless the stakes are much higher than his hometown getting the Olympic games.
