Memorizing the US Constitutional Amendments

I decided it's been too long without some good old-fashioned shameless blog pimping. However, I do think this is something C2 readers will enjoy.

I recently wrote a series of posts that help you learn to memorize the 27 amendments to the US Constitution with mnemonics:

Amendments 1-9
Amendments 10-18
Amendments 19-27

It might sound hard, but it's really not. It's even easier if you memorize the mnemonics over several sessions, just like how I posted them. I've tried to make it fun by including various videos. Each amendment includes a link to the exact text, and many of those links include notes on their history and purpose.

The mnemonics aren't original with me, but rather compiled from a variety of sources. Each of them is designed to be easily remembered, such as the one for the 2nd amendment, “2 Arms! 2 Arms!”. There are even ones for groups of amendments, like this one: “In come senators with wine and women.” Which amendments does that refer to? Click the links and find out!

If you find the mnemonics too easy, you could always try memorizing the exact text with the item from my previous shameless blog pimping, Verbatim, which I've just finished updating.

Besides, who knows? Learning the Constitutional amendments by heart may come in handy over the coming years.

  2. Will this help in learning about the amendments Obama think are missing, like those that guarantee "redistribution of wealth and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society"?

  3. Don't worry, JCM - the mnemonics will help fit into those extra spaces.

You could adapt the techniques, but the linked posts only refer to Consitutional amendments that exist in reality.

  38. Some great quotes from the NYT on the War against Fox:

Ah, but pretending has traditionally been a valuable part of the presidential playbook. Smiling and wearing beige even under the most withering news media assault is not only good manners, but also has generally been good politics. While there is undoubtedly a visceral thrill in finally setting out after your antagonists, the history of administrations that have successfully taken on the media and won is shorter than this sentence.
    * * *
But Fox News, as many have pointed out, is not in the access business. They are in the agitation business. And the administration, by deploying official resources against a troublesome media organization, seems to have brought a knife to a gunfight.

You would think the White House would take pause when Helen Thomas and the NYT tell them to think about what they are doing. LOL.

It fits my small hands well, 10 rounds of .40 double stack. It's smaller than the Glock 27 grip.

    ReplyDelete
  97. No, and here's the reason:

.38 Special and .357 Mag are actually the SAME design; the .357 is purposefully longer by 0.1" to prevent it from being loaded into an older .38 Special firearm which may be too weak for the chamber pressure. However, the case headspaces on the RIM of the cartridge, which means that you can put .38s in your .357 if you don't mind the extra cleaning involved in possibly leading the forcing cone.

The Browning ACP cartridges , including .380, headspace on the case MOUTH (the other end from the rebated rim). A .380 will chamber in a 9mm firearm, but it will not headspace correctly, resulting in an ignition in the chamber without a case (no fun, gun may blow up) and possibly a misaligned bullet (no fun, gun may blow up).

Be careful with ammo I guess is the gist of what I'm saying here.

Excellent point. Spork-related crime has been on a big upswing, lately. Someone simply must think of the children!

  117. I got home to discover ...

    1) the return hose from the dishwasher had come unattached (I had to remove the disposal last night to get some kind of metallic object that was stuck in there out) spraying water under the sink and all over the kitchen.

    2) one of the kids had gotten into my bed after I'd gone off to work and peed in it. Wifey poo never noticed the puddle, apparently.

  119. Personally, I plan on stocking up on cases of sporks which I will bury at various points around my cabin in the woods in preparation for the dark day whey they come to take my sporks from me.

  121. Lucius, one more post before I go
It could have been worse. My wife described coming home to find the downstairs bathroom, where the dogs had been penned, a "river of poop". One or more had diarrhea.

  124. Oh, I've found rivers of poo in my house as well, usually on account of one or another child. I have cleaned up my fair share of poo-namis.
