ON THE LEFT: Rep. Edolphus Towns

Democrats lock Republicans out of committee room

Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) locked Republicans out of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee room to keep them from meeting when Democrats aren’t present.

Towns’ action came after repeated public ridicule from the leading Republican on the committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), over Towns’s failure to launch an investigation into Countrywide Mortgage’s reported sweetheart deals to VIPs.

For months Towns has refused Republican requests to subpoena records in the case. Last Thursday Committee Republicans, led by Issa, were poised to force an open vote on the subpoenas at a Committee mark-up meeting. The mark-up was abruptly canceled. Only Republicans showed up while Democrats chairs remained empty.

Republicans charged that Towns cancelled the meeting to avoid the subpoena vote. Democrats first claimed the mark-up was canceled due to a conflict with the Financial Services Committee. Later they said it was abandoned after a disagreement among Democratic members on whether to subpoena records on the mortgage industry’s political contributions to Republicans.

  2. The coverage has been mostly about the "procedural" act of locking out the R's and how childish everyone looks. You have to dig a bit deeper into the articles to find out that the R's are seeking full disclosure on the whole Countrywide/VIP lending scams - (yeah, I'm lookin' at you Dodd, et. al)

Go R's! Demand - very loudly - for all those records and get that investigation going and going publicly.

And near me! His offices are in San Clemente, but I believe his district in No. County San Diego. He's not always been the best conservative Republican, but he does get most of the big issues right.

What Are the Economic Priorities of Oregon State Government?

But today, Oregon’s economy is simply crashing. The most recent jobs report from Oregon’s Department of Labor shows that from the high point of employment in December of 2007 to the current September report, Oregon has lost 124,300 jobs – 10,000 in the last month. But during that same period of time the number of government and public education jobs has grown by 7000. That means that nearly 132,300 private sector jobs have been lost in Oregon over the past twenty-one months.

  34. Mitch McConnell Health Care Debate Home Run.

'Every Republican in Congress supports reform'

The simple fact is, every Republican in Congress supports reform.

Health care costs are too high, and too many Americans lack health insurance. I have said so in just about every one of those 50 speeches and in dozens of interviews. And every other Senate Republican is on record favoring common-sense reforms for a system that needs them — ideas such as medical liability reform and equalizing the tax treatment for businesses and individuals who buy insurance.

Republicans are also on record about what we don't favor, and that's a 1,500-page bill that includes a lot of things Americans didn't ask for and very little of what they did.

    What happened?

Somewhere along the way, things got off track. Americans asked for step-by-step reforms that cut costs and increased access. Instead, they got a 1,500 page, trillion-dollar plan that would vastly expand the role of government in the health care decisions of every American and would pay for it with higher premiums, higher taxes and massive cuts to the Medicare program for seniors.

  39. Prosecutor: Anger, not illness prompted Jewish center shooting

A second trial began Wednesday to determine whether a mentally ill man who stormed a Jewish center in 2006, killing one woman and wounding five others as he railed against Israel and U.S. foreign policy, was legally insane at the time.

Naveed Haq's first trial ended last year with jurors deadlocked on that question.

One of the first jurors when asked basically said the problem was easy access to guns, not Haq.

    From the link.....

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration plans to order companies that received huge government bailouts last year to sharply cut the compensation of their highest paid executives.

A person familiar with the decision, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it has not been announced, says the seven companies that received the most assistance will have to cut the annual salaries of their 25 highest-paid executive by an average of about 90 percent from last year.

This person says the Treasury Department will announce the deep pay cuts within the next few days.

The seven companies are: Bank of America Corp., American International Group Inc., Citigroup Inc., General Motors, GMAC, Chrysler and Chrysler Financial.

  52. OT: "Reporters Without Borders" has released their "Press Freedom Index 2009", and wouldn't you know, the USA has jumped TWENTY full places from last year's rankings, from #40 to #20!

    Why is this, you ask?

Well... for the same reason they awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize: Because Obama is just so dreamy.

The United States has climbed 16 places in the rankings, from 36th to 20th, in just one year. Barack Obama’s election as president and the fact that he has a less hawkish approach than his predecessor have had a lot to do with this.

Now... why Obama's putative "less hawkish approach" in foreign affairs has anything to do with more alleged press freedom in the US, kind of escapes me. Particularly since I don't recall the Bush White House ever declaring that, say, CBS News wasn't a "real news organization", and warning other networks not to pay any attention to it. But those progressives are smarter than I am, so I'm sure they've got a handle on this.
