PLANET OBAMA: White House Makes Enemies of Bush Allies

Wrath rains on Chamber of Commerce, insurers, banks

The Obama White House has deliberately placed favored Washington institutions of the Bush years in its crosshairs, a sign of an escalating battle between the Democratic administration and some of the city's pre-eminent power players.

In recent days, the administration has attacked the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the insurance industry for opposing key administration objectives, has criticized the nation's largest banks and financial firms for outsized executive pay, and has tried to delegitimize the Fox News Channel by mocking its objectivity.

"When you're on their side, it's all OK, but if you're not, they rain hell down on you," said R. Bruce Josten, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, bemoaning the administration's bellicose response to differing opinions on health care and financial regulatory reform proposals.

So much for being the most post-partisan president evah.

Obama's administration, as 3 wood observed yesterday, is running this country the way the Chicago Machine is running the City of Chicago.
You're either WITH Obama or your AGAINST Obama. No in between allowed.

  6. The question I have to ask is when is Obama going to start fighting our real enemies? You know the ones that have stated that they want the west to be tossed aside?

Recently Obama has blamed Bush for Afghanistan, when they in fact signed off on the Bush plan. Now Obama is dithering, he's trying to vote present.

Pretty telling, huh? Then again, who even reads Dowd? She's part of that elitist group that thinks they are the voice of the nation or something and is really on seriously read and discussed by a small cadre of peers.

Reminds me of the "giants" of American literature: Oates, Updike, etc. Held aloft on marble pillars but their work is mind numbingly boring.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Now that's just a sad song, turn.

Off to lunch...have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Realwest,

Amen, but it's much worse than that. Back in March, Obama gave a speech in which he said,

"Today, I am announcing a comprehensive, new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. This marks the conclusion of a careful policy review that I ordered as soon as I took office. My Administration has heard from our military commanders and diplomats. We have consulted with the Afghan and Pakistani governments; with our partners and NATO allies; and with other donors and international organizations. And we have also worked closely with members of Congress here at home. Now, I'd like to speak clearly and candidly to the American people."

Now, 6 months later Obama is acting like he still hasn't made a decision. He did. Back in March he decided to endorse General Petraeus' COIN strategy. Unfortunately, he then spent the next 6 months reneging on that decision. He wants a "do-over". It clear from his own comments and from his advisers, the WhiteHouse had no idea what they were endorsing back in March. They imagined COIN meant they could do the war on the cheap with fewer troops, not more.

Obama & his staff are incompetent, lying, cowards.

  65. Taliban strike near nuclear facility in Pakistan's Punjab
    By BILL ROGGIO

A Taliban suicide bomber has killed seven people near a nuclear weapons complex in Pakistan's Punjab province.

The suicide bomber detonated outside a security checkpoint near the Kamra Air Weapon Complex in the district of Attock, Geo News reported. Three security personnel and four civilians were killed in the blast, and 12 more were wounded.

The attack is the latest in a string of suicide strikes and military assaults by the Taliban against Pakistan's security forces, the government, and civilians. Today the Taliban assassinated a senior general and his driver near the general's home in Islamabad. Yesterday the Taliban conducted a dual suicide attack at Islamic International University in Islamabad. The Taliban have announced they are at war with the state so long as South Waziristan remains under military siege.

While the first $60,000 of her income would be lightly taxed, the next $60,000 would be hit with what is in effect a 79% tax rate. Given a choice between a part-time or easy job paying $60,000 and a demanding, stress-ridden job paying $120,000...

How did a middle-class single mom wind up with a 79% marginal tax rate? At $120,000 she would pay $16,500 a year more in federal and state taxes, wouldn't qualify for the five-year $12,000-a-year cut in her mortgage payments she's applying for and would be eligible for $19,000 a year less in need-based college financial aid."

Several more stories like that at the link. My head explodes when I read such stuff.

Old joke: Two cloak-and-suiters are talking business. One says to the other, "I see you're selling suits for $150. How much do they cost you to manufacture?"

    "$200," the other replies.

The ripple effect of where Obama is headed with this is truly disasterous for this country. And there WILL come a point where he won't be able to get away with blaming Bush.

  131. Copyright kicks in automatically when something is "fixed in tangible form" for everything created after 1978. You don't have to actively register it for the copyright to exist. (This is a change from pre-1978 law, where the work went into the public domain if it was published without being registered at the time of publication.)

That means that both Obamas' papers are under copyright. However, if they were not/have not been registered, that copyright is unenforceable until registration has taken place.

Any work that is in copyright and registered can be quoted without permission for the purpose of commentary; that is part of "fair use." So Limbaugh--a commercial rather than non-profit enterprise, who is also under fire from the White House--was probably playing safe to come clearly within fair-use restrictions to avoid any chance of a copyright claim against him.

If Michelle Obama's thesis was online, that may have had to do with the collegiate policies of Princeton, and whether they had placed it there.

  136. Here is an excerpt of Obama's writing:

"... the Constitution allows for many things, but what it does not allow is the most revealing. The so-called Founders did not allow for economic freedom. While political freedom is supposedly a cornerstone of the document, the distribution of wealth is not even mentioned. While many believed that the new Constitution gave them liberty, it instead fitted them with the shackles of hypocrisy." - Barack Obama

But economic freedom is antithetical to economic equality. I don't think Obama realizes the contradiction. Economic freedom would mean you are free to make as much as you can produce; equality would restrict that freedom.

The Sixties were all about "honesty" and "keeping it real"--in other words, doing away with the necessary social hypocrisies which make it possible for society to function. Obama is still mired in the "keeping it real" mindset, as he clearly was when he wrote that paper.

  145. This Could be big..... 48 hour rule however.

    Obama's Columbia thesis excerpt surfaces

I missed this first time around. Brian Lancaster at Jumping in Pools reported on Obama’s college thesis, written when he was at Columbia. The paper was called “Aristocracy Reborn,” and in the first ten pages (which were all that reporter Joe Klein–who wrote about it for Time–was permitted to see), the young Obama wrote:

“… the Constitution allows for many things, but what it does not allow is the most revealing. The so-called Founders did not allow for economic freedom. While political freedom is supposedly a cornerstone of the document, the distribution of wealth is not even mentioned. While many believed that the new Constitution gave them liberty, it instead fitted them with the shackles of hypocrisy.”

That’s quite an indictment, even for an Ivy League undergraduate. I wonder if the prof–and I’d like to know who the prof was–made an appropriate marginal comment, something about historical context, about the Constitution’s revolutionary status in the history of freedom, and about the separation of powers in order to make the creation of any “shackles” as difficult as possible.

The philosphy fits with Obama's Chicago NPR interview where he bemoaned "negative liberties" of the Constitution constaining government.

"Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naive, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or
"dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best."

  155. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.

    Alexis de Tocqueville

We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name--liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names -- liberty and tyranny.
    Abraham Lincoln

Be very, very clear. When Obama says, "equality," "freedom," and "liberty" he does not mean the what the founders meant, what we classical liberals mean. He means something entirely different.

    ReplyDelete
  156. By the way, I don't know if anyone has commented on this, but...

The constant reiteration of "so-called" in Obama's thesis echoes the language of Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. They were big into using "so-called Negroes," "so-called" this and "so-called" that, in their rhetoric. It was like a metatag for NOI thought.

Obama, it would seem, was clearly in thrall to NOI modes of thinking when he wrote the paper, to have adopted this verbal tic as much as he did. His pastor, Jeremiah Wright, is also a former NOI member.

Just thought that was worthy of note, the NOI being famous for its deeply racist and antisemitic views.

In fact, it's not idiotic at all. A baby mama with 4 children by 4 different fathers is entitled to a windfall of child support and welfare payments. While she is unlikely to see consistent child support cheques, the gov't will keep on paying, so long as she does not do anything stupid like getting married to one of the fathers. Welfare imposes an economic disincentive to two parent families.

Whether this excerpt is satire or not, I still believe that the reason we have never seen Obama's transcripts is that he never took anything of substance. i.e., that all of his coursework was in the "hate sciences", "Marxist theology", "social justice theories", etc. This would go a long way toward explaining why he apparently has no knowledge of history and no geopolitical perspective.
