The Russian Airbus jet was likely brought down by a Jihadi MANPAD. Had serious engine trouble. Pilot radioed, was descending to land at nearest airport. That would be al-Arish's runway 34 North.
ReplyDeleteAircraft had descended from 30K to 5K before it disappeared. Wreckage was found about 35 km south of al-Arish (north of a hilly area which is north of of two cement plants.)
ISIS in the Sinai is known to have Soviet shoulder-fired MANPADS. A mile up is within range of one.
The area around al-Arish is a combat zone. Egypt has lost a military helicopter to ISIS ground fire.
MANPADS can't hit a plane at 30,000 ft. Either it was hit much earlier but the damage wasn't apparent, or something else went wrong, including sabotage.
ReplyDeleteGiven where it occurred, the IDF would know if it was a missile.
MANPADS can't hit a plane at 30,000 ft.
DeletePrecisely so, and almost all of the media is going on that. BUT it was reported early that the a/c had ascended to 30k ft in the first 20 minutes, then descended to 5.5K ft in one minute.
The pilot had radioed to the ground that he had engine trouble, and was going to land at the nearest airport.
There is a video out there (posted by ISIS) which purports (purports) to show the a/c being hit and going down with heavy smoke trailing from it. The plane is relatively low. The sillhoutte is that of a commercial airliner.
So was it hit on the way up or on the way down? If the video isn't faked. As I said, the IDF would know if a MANPAD was fired in Sinai. But they're not saying.
DeleteBTW, the US knows exactly where the BUK missile was launched that hit the Malaysia flight. Unofficially, they've given the are to within 4 sq. km, well within separatist territory. The only question there is who launched it. (Ukraine maintains that missile system, so it is reasonable to assume separatists have that information.)
Now this is scary. C2 down. Looks like a few of us remember the blogspot site.
ReplyDeleteC2 BACK UP!
ReplyDeleteMedia reporting on the crash is even more superficial than usual.
ReplyDeleteOne news outlet breathlessly called the scene, a "very mountainous" part of the Sinai. Photos from Egyptian news outlets show flatland desert.
None of the later reports are mentioning that the aircraft had descended to a low altitude.
One article writer opines that the pilot was trying to fly the Airbus A-321 on only two engines.
Well, of course if the plane came down it descended!
DeleteAnd an A321 has only two engines!
MSM average IQ must be around 50.
