Sunday Morning Above the Fold

We're Governed by Callous Children
Americans feel increasingly disheartened, and our leaders don't even notice.
The new economic statistics put growth at a healthy 3.5% for the third quarter. We should be dancing in the streets. No one is, because no one has any faith in these numbers. Waves of money are sloshing through the system, creating a false rising tide that lifts all boats for the moment. The tide will recede. The boats aren't rising, they're bobbing, and will settle. No one believes the bad time is over. No one thinks we're entering a new age of abundance. No one thinks it will ever be the same as before 2008. Economists, statisticians, forecasters and market specialists will argue about what the new numbers mean, but no one believes them, either. Among the things swept away in 2008 was public confidence in the experts. The experts missed the crash. They'll miss the meaning of this moment, too.

After all the fuss, govt health plan to cover few
After all the noise over Democrats' push for a government insurance plan to compete with private carriers, coverage numbers are finally in:

Two percent.

That's the estimated share of Americans younger than 65 who'd sign up for the public option plan under the health care bill that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is steering toward House approval.

The underwhelming statistic is raising questions about whether the government plan will be the iron-fisted competitor that private insurers warn will shut them down or a niche operator that becomes a haven for patients with health insurance horror stories.

  1. Oops, left my Halloween name up by accident.

I think they've notices, they just don't give a rats ass what we think anymore.
Instead they just rewrite and reword it to make it sound less intrusive than it is.
    And we say "Bullshit".

  4. I'm not sure I agree completely with Noonan's point.

We're still taking stock of the situation, still trying to figure out how bad it's going to be.

I have enormous amounts of faith in the American people. In their resourcefulness, ingenuity and willingness to work a bad time through.

The problem right now is the administration shows no signs of letting up. Of simply letting Americans, do what Americans do.

I hear ya but there's one problem. Once this crap is enacted, it's a Sysiphian task to undo it. This won't be a 'temporary bad time'.

Now, I'm going to repost my ghost story from downstairs.

And on that topic, I will say that my mother, who passed in Sept 2003 still shows up. Not just to me, but to my sister and both her daughters.

The last time was a few months ago when my sister called to tell me her daughter is pregnant. THAT was a wonderful shock - my neice swore she'd never have kids. Then she hit 37 yrs old and said 'um, hold on a sec'

There was on the phone screaming 'WHAT?! SERIOUSLY!?"

And there was mom - one of only two times I've actually SEEN her - laughing her ass off. She said 'It's a boy!" and evaporated.

one month later - confirmed. It's a boy.

  15. Well I think that was Noonan's "Malaise" speech.
What is really going on is that folks are seeing just how much we can't trust our own government.
That is, I think, all in all a good thing.
As for the rest of her points, not so much.
Where there is real evidence is in the Tea Parties: hundreds of thousands, even Millions of ordinary Americans (discounting the hustlers Left and Right) are saying exactly that: We neither TRUST NOR LIKE our government. And I don't understand President Obama - didn't he learn ANYTHING from Clinton's presidency? Bill let Hillary run amok with Health Care and that is really distracting most of us (and unintentionally so by Obama, Emmanuel and Axelrod)from the serious business at hand:the major issue facing us is not the less than 15% of Americans who supposedly can't afford health insurance by remaking a health insurance industry that the remaining 85% like or at least can live with, it's that so many AMERICANS ARE UNABLE TO FOUND SUITABLE EMPLOYMENT.
In other words, IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID. Not health care!

  16. Repost from down stairs:

    Now this is scary

The President of the United States has no more legal right to sign a treaty that turns legislative, executive, and judicial functions of our national government over to the United Nations than he has to declare the United States an Islamic Republic and its people henceforward subject to Sharia. Nevertheless, that would be the effect of the proposed United Nations Climate Change Treaty awaiting Mr. Obama's signature in Copenhagen this coming December.

The proposed treaty authorizes the establishment of a "government" to transfer wealth from industrial nations to non-industrial nations in payment of a "climate debt" which, the treaty declares, the industrial nations owe on account of burning carbon-based fuels. The newly created international government is to have the authority to decide issues relating to carbon emissions in signatory nations, the power to levy what amounts to carbon taxes on signatory nations, and the power to enforce its levies without reference to the will of the people who live in the signatory nations.

There's more. It's worth the read.

  20. Before I go, gotta post this.

Female Jihadists Part I: Defining the Role of Women in Jihad

Strategic Social is pleased to introduce the first in what will be a series of posts on the topic of “female jihadists.” The term “female jihadists” refers to women who are used to actively support violent extremist groups in the Islamic World, ranging from nationalist groups like the remnants of the Iraqi Baath Party, to Muslim Brotherhood-inspired groups like the Palestinian organization HAMAS, to Salafist-jihadists groups like Al-Qaeda. Strategic Social believes that understanding the role of female jihadists in supporting these groups is one of the keys to combating violent extremism around the world.

This first post will cover the subject of how certain Islamic principles have been applied to justify having women play an active role in jihadist organizations. Over time, Strategic Social will post additional analyses on other topics related to the phenomenon of female jihadists, including the following:

    The use of Islamic religious scriptures to recruit female jihadists;
    A comparison of female jihadists in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the war in Iraq;
    The use of female suicide bombers in the war in Iraq;
    Islamic religious authorities’ rulings (which are called “fatwas” in Arabic) related to female jihadists;
Factors that make women susceptible to recruitment by jihadist organizations.

  22. Hey {gak} that is an interesting article and although it's dated today, I KNOW I've read that article (or one just like it) either at Powerline or at a link provided by Powerline.
That simply won't pass constitutional muster and, moreover - and in the real world more importantly, it won't pass muster with the American People.
I wrote a lengthy comment on a different blog over six months ago about how President Obama can sign the US on to the International Criminal Court all he wants too, and indeed the Senate can Unanimously approve it, and it won't matter at all: the Bill of Rights GUARANTEES to all Americans that we will have, certain rights - subsequently expanded by the SCOTUS - at a minimum, the right to not be subjected to double jeopardy (being tried for the same crime twice) the right to a trial by a jury of our peers and the right to face our accused, and the right to effective counsel and to have that counsel paid for by the government if we individually cannot afford to hire one. The ICC (which is a treaty) provides for NONE of the above and indeed, George W. Bush (whom I miss more with each passing day!) was afraid American Troops who were charged with crimes committed on foreign soil and who were tried and found not guilty by a US or US Military Court, could find themselves dragged in front of the ICC who's judges come from such nations as Syria, Iran, and other nations not especially known for their understanding of the word "justice".

    ReplyDelete
  23. Real, the Bill of Rights will become meaningless as will the Constitution if this "climate change treaty" is signed. The whole purpose of this treaty is to create a one world government. America will NOT be the leader of that government.

    ReplyDelete
  24. JCM said "When Washington and Jefferson spoke of "entangling alliances" this is precisely what they meant. They did not mean mutually beneficial alliances, they meant alliances where sovereignty was affected."
Actually my friend, they meant alliances where the US could be dragged into a war that truly didn't affect the US. Although I'm quite certain that they would agree with your statment also.
They didn't go through ALL that they went through to form what is STILL the most Free nation on earth, to see it all washed away because some stumblebums someplace else got involved in something that was none of our concern.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Gak, you'll pardon me for saying this, but you need to step back for a moment and relax and do some more thinking about this. Neither Obama, nor the US Senate nor indeed ANY President with or without the consent of any Senate has the legal right to give away the United States' sovereignty.
That's why American military take an oath to uphold and defend the United States Constitution, NOT the President of the United States.
This has ZERO chance of ever happening.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ah, amendment to my comment to Gak - Obama might sign the treaty, but a) he won't get Senate confirmation and b) even if he does get Senate confirmation, the people of the United States (and especially the United States Supreme Court) will NEVER, EVER ABIDE BY IT -NEVER CEDE OUR SOVEREIGNTY TO ANY WORLD BODY. EVER.

  27. Real,

This has ZERO chance of ever happening.

    Don't be so sure Sparky.

Sovereignty Advocates Urge U.S. Supreme Court to Not Rely on International Law

Many Americans are concerned about the Court’s recent reliance on international law as a basis for deciding important constitutional questions. In Lawrence v. Texas (2003), the Court struck down a Texas sodomy law as violating the liberty interests of consenting same-sex adults. The decision had the effect of invalidating similar laws throughout the United States. In the case, the Court referred to a decision of the European Court of Human Rights as support for the proposition that the right of same-sex couples to engage in sodomy “has been accepted as an integral part of human freedom in many other countries.” In Roper v. Simmons (2005), in striking down state laws permitting the sentencing of juveniles under the age of 18 to the death penalty, the Court relied on an international human rights treaty that has never been ratified by the United States Senate.

This term, in deciding the cases of Graham v. Florida and Sullivan v. Florida, the Court will once again be tempted to rely on international human rights treaties that have not been ratified by the U.S. Senate or to which the U.S. Senate made reservations that specifically exclude their application to the sentencing of juveniles to life without parole. In an amicus curiae brief filed in these two cases, Amnesty International and other non-governmental organizations argue that there is a customary international norm that prohibits the sentencing of juveniles to life without parole upon which the Court should rely in overturning state juvenile sentencing laws in over 40 states. To the contrary, the amicus curiae brief filed by Solidarity Center for Law and Justice, the Sovereignty Network, and others argues that there is no applicable international human rights treaty law that prohibits the sentencing of juveniles to life without parole. The brief also argues that there is no customary international norm against such sentences that is sufficiently definite to serve as a basis for the Court’s decision.

  30. JCM - we need to replace those people who understand what it means to be an American, not just a partisan hack.
And if those inside the beltway think that that climate change treaty seems reasonable it can only be because the default postion of our Congress is to vote on bills they've never read.

Pass legislation signed by the president that using foreign law is not allowed, up to impeaching the Justices who voted for that ruling.

My commando outfit worked out pretty well, I think. (And by that I don't mean that I went out for Halloween without wearing any underwear.) Army Combat Uniform, camo paint, shooting gloves, black balaclava, and a (pretty cool!) Nerf dart carbine-style gun. I gussied up the latter by adding an actual tactical sling, and duct-taping on a TacStar tactical light and a pressure switch. 72. Morning guys, the crazy thing about the Obama administration and the Dimocrats in control of government, is they finally have the power to pass all these eco-socialist laws they have been wanting for the past 20 years, and unfortunately (or fortunately) the recession is the wrong time to pass these economically destructive measures that will only frack up our economy more, and not just a little more, but a lot more!
Americans look in disgust and horror at congress and senate hastily voting on huge and major, major economic impact bills that are voted on after only 17 hours of inspection. 1200 page bills for 800 billion in stimulus that upon even the briefest inspection was not stimulus but pure pay back for every liberal social project awaiting funding at the local level. Six billion was earmarked for ACORN for crying out loud.
And this crazy cap and trade bill for carbon emissions is just as whacky and looks like it is designed to create fraud and a lot of money for Al Gore and the carbon traders, then damage our domestic coal and oil production, dramatically raising our pump prices by like 100 percent.
Yep just what the country needed! Let's shoot our economy in the head to appease a bunch of unethical liberal whiners who don't have a clue as to what they are doing, except it makes them feel good.
Now Obama and Pelosi want to install a universal (socialist)health care system to further cripple our economy. Instead of fixing the real issue of high priced medical care due to malpractice suits and over-regulation. Nothing is said about tort-reform or deregulation, or allowing more med-schools in the US to produce more doctors. (AMA only allows 100 med schools in the US)
The country is truly screwed up, and we are trying to work our way out of it. If our leaders would only do nothing America would stand a fighting chance of coming out of our recession. It appears the Obama admin and Dims are dead set on destroying our economy.
Its time to start fighting back and bring some common sense to our wayward government.

  86. Unfortunately, you are correct, RW. They will own it outright. But, if Obamacare gets passed, it will be impossible to get rid of it. And, if Obama gets us entangled in some stupid greenhouse gas treaty with the world, that will be hard to undo as well.

The Dems/Left look at the USA and think of what it could be and think it would be great "only if" certain things happens. The Rep/Right looks at the USA and thinks it's already exceptional and special.

Elections have consequences....I hope all of the mushy independents, RINO's and brainwashed Republicans that voted for this man are happy now.

  88. No problem with cutting and pasting my version of FF, DD.
"I think they are willing to take the political hit, Loflyer. They will suffer through the losses in the house and Senate because once these entitlements and treaties are set, it's awfully hard to get out of them."
    I am running FF 3.5.4

As for the Dimocrats, if we can raise the amount of interest to what we saw at the emigration amnesty reform bill, we might stop them.
None of this insane stimulus, cap and trade or health reform bills would get anywhere with average American voter if our media would stop it lies of omission and start acting like real journalists rather than a fracken' cheer leader squad.

Sozzafava is slimy as hell, and sure wasn't a republican. Supporting the democrat is what she wants her supporters to do. And the RNC was backing her?

Hardly surprising, seeing as how she supports 100% of the Democrat agenda, from card check to Obamacare. She may as well just switch parties now.

/but don't you dare call her a RINO

  92. Hey DD - if y'all take a look at the link posted at the top of the comment (for which I received a h/t) you'll notice that Obamacare is FAR from non-reversable.
Moreover, the cap and tax is a treaty and we can (and if we get a decent POTUS elected) will walk away from it.
But for now, we HAVE to focus on getting MUCH stronger in Congress (which is one reason why I'm so pissed off at the NYS GOP in the 23rd CD election) and on beating Obama in 2012. And if anyone (like, say, our erstwhile tax cheating Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner) tells you the economy is on the rebound, look at it this way: unless and until unemployment and underemploment seriously starts to change for the better, it won't matter to the VOTERS what the economists say; you don't have a job or you have one that pays you HALF of what you earned, out goes Obama and the LEFT. PERIOD, FULL STOP.
Can't blame it all on Bush forever.
