Connections: The Long Chain (Part 7 of 10)

The Long Chain is the title of this week's Connections episode. Last week, we followed a path in history from the assembly line to the development of the airplane.

What happened the last time an efficient cargo-carrier was developed? This week, James Burke starts with the Dutch Fluyt ships, which were remarkably similar in principle to the modern 747, and takes us to a long history of disease, war, famine and empires, to end at the last place you'd expect.

Following the video are links to further research on the major topics of this episode, with ones that reveal the ending, as always, purposefully left out.

  3. Muslims call for justice at funeral for lslamic leader

Muslim leaders called for justice today at the funeral of Luqman Ameen Abdullah, the Islamic leader killed by FBI agents this week during a shootout in Dearborn.

''We are looking for justice,'' said Imam Mohammed Elahi of the Islamic House of Wisdom to a packed crowd that spilled outside. ''The closest road to Allah is justice. May Allah bless his soul.'' Elahi said.

''Allah Akbar,'' God is great, the packed crowd said at times during the funeral.

    Justice?

/radical Imam dude opened up on law enforcement and killed an FBI dog

  5. Happy Halloween C2ers! Just taking a ten minute break from the party preparations. I am already dead on my feet and the party will most likely go into the wee hours.

  6. KB, what he probably meant to say is, "Heads must roll!"

PBJ! Happy Halloween! Should we expect a bleary-eyed, hungover PBJ tomorrow? Good to see you!

  13. Afternoon again. Printed off my "press" pass for tonight, walked and played with the puppy. Downloading some pictures now for my friend and getting ready for tonight. I am going to have a blast.

  14. Happy Halloween C2!!

Treat or Treat and a little party tonight.
We are handing out 'treats' for kids and adults tonight. If you are over 21, you could get a nice fall lager, a glass of blood red wine or a caipiranha in your treat sack.
Don't you wish you were my neighber? ;)

I never understood this - if the post was removed, how is it that a notice can still be there saying it's been removed?

I guess it's one of those eternal mysteries, like how "Don't Walk On The Grass" signs get in the middle of the grass.

That's OK - your Classical Values links were worth the wait!

Does anybody else think we should add Classical Values to the blogroll?

Bare and I walk my dogs sometimes in a place where someone has one of those "NOT HERE!" dog signs - and it's near someone's door in an apartment complex, so it's not even their lawn - so you can guess what happens when we pass that place. : )

  27. CC do you dress the dogs up for Halloween? I put my dog in a black capelike thing that has a glow in the dark skeleton on the back. Dog hates it! LOL

  28. LOL snow (sounds cute!) - well, for the first time, my two 'boys' got t-shirts. My Corgi got "Little Terror" (and he is...he has the herding instinct from hell), and my other guy (a Basset/Corgi mix) got a trick-or-treat shirt. Other than Brett Favre jerseys, that is the extent of their wardrobe. : )

I've just finished adding Classical Values to the blogroll, and updated some of the items so they show their current entries (via RSS).

  30. Okay, I went out on a limb and put up a thread so people could tell or make up creepy stories of the paranormal (or even good stories that just can't be explained)...if you're afraid of looking kooky, that's okay - but I'll start with a couple of mine, since I even have a personal witness who knows I'm quite balanced (yes, that would be Bare!) and who was even present for a couple of the things I'll tell you about.

Just seemed like fun. You don't have to believe in ghosts or the paranormal to participate - it's about things that you can't explain, as well.

And it's up, with the boxing glove. ; )
