I have a laptop I've been banging away on for a couple of years, and I brand new one I've only booted a few times...I'm just sort of saving it (weird, I know) - but I'd like something I can take to Starbucks and use to make sure everything is humming along on C2 all right.
Does that make sense? I want a tiny computer.
Of course, I have an iTouch. But that's hard to deal with if you want to do anything but look.

I know of one parking lot where there is a Starbucks on each of three sides of it - seriously. The only side that doesn't have one is the side that borders the street!

Well I have to admit, Corre∫pondence Committee, that Starbucks is ok (left wing as hell but still a capitalistic enterprise which THESE days counts as something good!) but I was soooo embarrassed the first time I went into one, I never went back - and it was for the same reason you saw long lines in Manhattan (I was in Manhattan at the time of my incident too). Like many folks I have (had when I was working) a morning routine. I get a soft buttered roll and a coffee, light and sweet. I go into Starbucks and it takes like 20 minutes to read the menu (forget about understanding it!) - others were having the same problem - so when I went up to place my order I said "One coffee, light and a buttered roll please, no nuts or seeds on the roll." She said "You want a Latte Grande and a something or other" and I said "NO I WANT A LIGHT COFFEE AND A BUTTERED ROLL." And so she hands me a ticket and says "wait until you're called". So I waited and waited and waited and finally got this HUGE BAG of stuff, paid what I'd ordinarily pay for lunch, get to the office and - ta da! - it's something ok, not terrible tasting (but not worth the price)but it's not a coffee, light and a buttered roll. I never went back after that; just went to my usual deli where the counterman said "Hey Mr. Realwest, how youse doing? The usual?" and I said yes, thanks Jose." And I paid my $1.50 got to the office with one light coffee and a buttered roll. WHY DOES STARBUCKS MAKE ORDERING SO DIFFICULT?!?

And Pi Guy - I was one of those who fled NYC because of the cost of living - I hadda get on Social Security Disability Income and the RENT ALONE (No utilties, cable tv, nothing else) exceeded what I was receiving in SSDI income and that was for a crappy SMALL studio apartment in Hells' Kitchen - not the gentrified part of it, the real Hell's Kitchen. And even with all that high cost of living, I hated to leave.

I like my netbook. I bought an Asus Eee PC 900. (With the solid state hard-drive.)
It is not very powerful. It is very small and light.
It is great for taking along in for cafe' computing, so long as you don't expect it to be as fast and responsive as a fully featured top of the line laptop.
I like the solid state hard drive because it means that I am less likely to destroy it while using it in motion on a ferry or a train.
I would recommend getting one with the ram maxed out at the factory. Upgrading the ram on my Asus is problematic. I don't know if Sony has the same issues.
Pi, I'm still here. I was just scheduling tomorrow. I found some pretty interesting stuff...if it's very busy like it was this morning (overflowing threads all over the place) I'll have to find something else after I get up, but this should take care of most of the day.
The more I think about it, the more I would recomemd the solid state hard drive. The net books are small and easy to bump and drop. The conventional hard drives are sensitive to that kind of stuff. The solid states are very robust in comparison.
Sleep is good. I was nodding off until I got an unsettling phone call. Now I am seriously thiking of taking a benadryl to make sure I don't stay up worrying.

I haven't seem him attempt any handling. I disapprove of it.

ReplyDeleteAnd Pi Guy - I was one of those who fled NYC because of the cost of living - I hadda get on Social Security Disability Income and the RENT ALONE (No utilties, cable tv, nothing else) exceeded what I was receiving in SSDI income and that was for a crappy SMALL studio apartment in Hells' Kitchen - not the gentrified part of it, the real Hell's Kitchen.
And even with all that high cost of living, I hated to leave.
Well y'all I gotta get some sleep now. But it's been grand as usual! I hope you all have a great evening/early morning and that I get the chance to see you all down the road!

ReplyDeleteI like my netbook. I bought an Asus Eee PC 900. (With the solid state hard-drive.)
It is not very powerful. It is very small and light.
It is great for taking along in for cafe' computing, so long as you don't expect it to be as fast and responsive as a fully featured top of the line laptop.
I like the solid state hard drive because it means that I am less likely to destroy it while using it in motion on a ferry or a train.
I would recommend getting one with the ram maxed out at the factory. Upgrading the ram on my Asus is problematic. I don't know if Sony has the same issues.

ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, the more I would recomemd the solid state hard drive. The net books are small and easy to bump and drop. The conventional hard drives are sensitive to that kind of stuff. The solid states are very robust in comparison.
