Highlights of this day in history: Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light bulb; Postal worker dies from inhaled anthrax; The British gain naval dominance in the Battle of Trafalgar; Carrie Fisher born.
Other notable October 21st events include:
1797 – In Boston Harbor, the 44-gun United States Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched.
1854 – Florence Nightingale and a staff of 38 nurses are sent to the Crimean War.
1959 – In New York City, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opens to the public.
1959 – US President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs an executive order transferring Wernher von Braun and other German scientists from the United States Army to NASA.
1973 – Fred Dryer of the then Los Angeles Rams becomes the first player in NFL history to score two safeties in the same game.
Good morning all. I like Pi Guy's today in history posts.

The words of the Caliph Umar:
ReplyDelete"Piety is taking what is due from everybody who owes it and giving what is due to everybody who has a right to it."
Sounds a lot like the Democrats.
And then there is this:
"I am between you and God, and nobedy is between me and Him. God has obliged me to prevent your petitions from reaching Him; bring your complains therefore to us. Whoever is not able to do this let him hand the complaint over to someone who can bring it to us; we shal wllinging take whatever is dut to him on his behalf and hand it over to him."
Lucius
ReplyDeleteWow. Where is this written? (I've skimmed the Koran - didn't see that - that I remember)
*urp* Sorry about the fruitcup Realwest, was a little hungry this morning. :)
ReplyDeleteQuote of the day, from a book I was rereading over lunch:
ReplyDelete"The government of the United States was developed under the idea that nobody knew how to make a government, or how to govern. The result is to invent a system to govern when you don't know how."
(Richard P. Feynman, "The meaning of it all: Thoughts of a Citizen-Scientist", p. 49)
We're reading from the history of al-Tabari, written around 900. The section we're doing right now covers the conquest of Iraq and Syria and ends with the capture of Jerusalem in 636.
ReplyDeleteThe text sounds right out of the al-Qaeda training videos.
"If you wish, choose to pay the poll tax [tax levied on unbelievers] and in humiliation If you wish to reject this offer, it is the sword unless you embrace Islam and save your soul."
Oh cripes.
ReplyDeleteDemocrats lock Republicans out of committee room
What IS it with NY politicians?
I guess the polls weren't going the way the Liberals here wanted. Iggy has backed off on forcing another election through a non-confidence vote. Also in the article it mentions our federal deficit this year. Wouldn't you guys love to deal with only a 56 billion dollar over expenditure?
ReplyDelete1774 – First display of the word "Liberty" on a flag, raised by colonists in Taunton, Massachusetts in defiance of British rule in Colonial America.
ReplyDeleteThe British immediately brand the use of the word "Liberty" to be a "racist codeword" of the "extreme Christian right."
1921 – President Warren G. Harding delivers the first speech by a sitting President against lynching in the deep south.
Another evil Republican.
1944 – The first kamikaze attack: HMAS Australia is hit by a Japanese plane carrying a 200 kg (441 pound) bomb off Leyte Island, as the Battle of Leyte Gulf began.
Both the New York Times and the United Nations claim that the suicide attack is a justified reaction to oppression by Israel; the paper's omsbudman is later forced to acknowledge that Israel and the United Nations don't even exist yet.
1945 – Women's suffrage: Women are allowed to vote in France for the first time.
Ownership of testicles had previously been a requirement to vote in France, but recent events had shown that few of the men in France possessed them either.
1994 – North Korea nuclear weapons program: North Korea and the United States sign an agreement that requires North Korea to stop its nuclear weapons program and agree to inspections.
Yeah. How did that one work out?
2003 – Images of the dwarf planet Eris are taken and subsequently used in its discovery by the team of Michael E. Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David L. Rabinowitz.
Starting the chain of events that led to the demotion of Pluto.

ReplyDeleteCatching up on some later questions onthe old thread:
ReplyDelete1. littleoldlady: Even in periods of high inflation, I believe the best long term strategy is a well diversified portfolio. If you want to be active in trading, you can pick individual stocks and try to time things, but that is a very dangerous way to go. I did that for over 20 years professionally, was good at it, but nearly had a heart attack from the stress at age 49, which is one major reason why I took early retirement and changed careers.
2. Attilla: With regard to the dry baltic index, I'm aware of it but I don't personally put much weight on it. Not that there is anything wrong with it and I'm not bad mouthing it. I just follow a lot of other things and econometric stats that would put all but the technical geeks out there like me to sleep, but they have worked well for me and I keep doing what works.

Good morning real.
Hey, I had my doctor's check up yesterday. My blood pressure is down to 96 over 60 (I think that is OK) and my cholesterol numbers had fallen off the chart, and I've dropped 15 pounds. Been working out, hard.
My doctor had a big smile on his face, very happy. Said he wished all his patients followed instructions as well as me.
I told him that I am very coachable, especially where my health is concerned.
Got to run to work. later.

Same here. How much protection do you have on your computer, VT?
James, I have 3 different virus, spyware programs. I should be completely safe. Don't know what happened. It could have been something my husband got into, though. He was surfing for Nancy Pelosi halloween masks the night before. Say....that might be it. ;)
ReplyDeleteUpdate on the Toronto 18 Terror suspects. A judge released video tape on the sting where they tried to buy 3 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. Also released was a mountie video showing what a one tonne explosion looks like. Six awaiting trial, five have pleaded guilty, and seven have had charges stayed.
ReplyDeleteVT -- I ran into a problem with some downloads that I ultimatley traced back to a Russian site. Kaspersky nuked them bigtime, but you never know what's lurking out there.
ReplyDeleteThat said, simply clicking on a page (such as lolcats) shouldn't be enough.
There was a Trojan running around for a while that made the computer think various files were infected when they weren't -- the effect was that it sort of Rick-Rolled your anti-virus software so it was running constantly.
ReplyDeleteUgh, gotta run. Hubby saw something in the papers he wants me to draft a response to.

And from the Toronto (Red) Star, a similar article with more details on the Toronto locations, but they just mention a "military base" off of highway 401. The base is Trenton AFB. The main base where a lot of logistics are shipped out for our military across the world.

Obama's War on Fox News Becomes a Quagmire
ReplyDeleteDespite the President's promise of a swift and decisive victory, Obama's War on Fox News has developed all signs of an unwinnable quagmire, making the White House even more isolated in its unilateral attempts to crush the growing media insurgency. As the war continues to grind on for a second month, public opinion is shifting towards a quick and complete withdrawal. While many observers still agree that the "War on Limbaugh" is a "just and necessary war," even the former supporters of the war effort are now labeling the War on Fox an "unnecessary war of choice" and claim that the cable channel had nothing to do with Obama's falling approval numbers.

ReplyDeleteOff to work.
Killian, while I beleive Obama's war on Fox will backfire, I am shocked that it has happened at all. Just thinking of what this means--all of us who were warning people before the election--it is happening. Obama will bear no criticism and he will attempt to crush his rivals. Worse in my mind was the attempt to get the White House press Corp to through them out, so the blood is not on their hands. Sad. It's like we are now a Banana Republic.

Occasional Reader is Kanye West!
ReplyDeleteMorning C2.
ReplyDeleteThis whole WH war on Fox can only be aimed at achieving some legislative end. As for PR, it's a lose-lose-lose: Republican base will be energized in its opposition by it; Independents will be turned off (from the admin.) by it; and the hard left still won't be happy--it'll never be enough ... I guess there's some percentage of the Dem. base that will approve. But that's not his audience here, either, which is kinda scary when you think what the WH is really up to ...

ReplyDeleteSudbury [MA] man arrested for planning terrorism attacks
ReplyDeleteA 27-year-old man from Sudbury has been arrested on charges he planned terrorism attacks inside and outside the United States, according to a spokeswoman for Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks.
The man was identified as Tarek Mehanna, who was arrested in November of last year for allegedly lying to authorities about a man who trained with al Qaida, federal officials tell the Herald.
More as it develops
Boy, what a great idea it was to allow threats of litigation to drive vaccine production to other countries, wasn't it?

Diplomats: Iran Agrees to Draft Deal on Uranium
ReplyDeleteBut diplomats told The Associated Press that it was essentially the original proposal drawn up by the IAEA that would commit Tehran to shipping 75 percent of its enriched uranium stockpile to Russia for further enrichment.
After that material is turned into metal fuel rods, it would then be shipped back to Iran to power its small research reactor in Tehran, according to the draft.
My guess is either the Iranians will find some flaw in the deal, giving them more time, or they've enriched enough uranium that they can ship this much out and still make bombs.
I'm pretty sure Mehanna is a Mormon name, OLT.

Which, come to think about it, doesn't sound half-bad, does it.
More on the Sudbury man planning attacks:
ReplyDeleteA 27-year-old man from Sudbury has been arrested on charges he planned terrorism attacks inside and outside the United States, including a plot to use automatic weapons to open fire at shoppers and emergency responders in shopping mall attacks, federal prosecutors said today.
Tarek Mehannah, of 6 Fairhaven Circle, is accused of conspiring with Ahmab Abousamra and others to obtain the automatic weapons needed to carry out a mall ambush in which they planned to open fire at random, said Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks.
The plot included plans to fire at emergency responders, but was abandoned because the men could not obtain the weapons.
Just in time for the Christmas shopping season.
