The Official C2 Occasional Reader International Hot Babes Welcome Morning Open Thread

218 comments:

  1. Nelogism of the Day!

The invented verb Obamu -- オバむ, "to Obama" -- has gained currency among some Japanese youths.

    Explanation:
"obamu: (v.) To ignore inexpedient and inconvenient facts or realities, think "Yes we can, Yes we can," and proceed with optimism using those facts as an inspiration (literally, as fuel). It is used to elicit success in a personal endeavor. One explanation holds that it is the opposite of kobamu. (拒む, which means to refuse, reject, or oppose).

  3. After Bono said how much he appreciates the President acting European, here's an editorial that shows how Americans feel:
European norms seem abnormal to U.S.
An interesting paradox. Last year, America elected a president who, in attitudes and policies, is closer to the elites of Western Europe than any of his predecessors.
Yet in the nine months that he has been in office, ordinary Americans have been moving away from those attitudes and policies and have increasingly embraced positions that over the years have made Americans distinctive from those in other advanced Western democracies.
Despite the recession, by about 50 percent to 40 percent Americans continue to prefer smaller government with fewer services to larger government with more services (June ABC/Washington Post and CBS/New York Times [NYT]).

A 58 percent to 35 percent majority say keep the budget deficit down even if it takes longer for the economy to recover (NBC/WSJ June).

As Europeanizing policies receive more attention, they become less popular. June’s 50 percent to 45 percent approval of Democratic health care proposals morphs to a similar margin of disapproval in October (Rasmussen). And satisfaction with one’s own health care arrangements rises from 29 percent in 2008 and 35 percent in May 2009 to 48 percent in August (Rasmussen again).

Gallup reports that 39 percent of Americans this year say their views have grown more conservative, while only 18 percent say they have become more liberal.

His name really lends itself to silly and disparaging contortions, doesn't it? During the campaign, my favorite term for his followers was "Barackolyte." I loved the religious connotations. I don't think it ever gained wide currency because most people don't know the word acolyte.

I like Pink Freud's formulations, but I'm hoping "Obamunism" catches on, based on its similarity to "communism."

Isn't that entrapment? At least the splodey-dopes go to Jihadi web sites (either real ones monitored by the feds, or fake ones set up to by the feds); the feds don't just call up random muslims and ask them if they want to join the Jihad.

Somewhat OT-does anyone here believe (or know of a decent explanation for why others believe) that the "Joker" parodies are racist/offensive? I think it's a great symbol for what Obama really is, but others seem to think it's out of line.

  47. Hey Kosh's Shadow - thank you very much for that link!
It's interesting to me how vociferous Robert L. Bernstein was in going after HRW. But I'm curious about something - the article said he was Chairman of HRW for 20 years - from 1978 to 1998 and I have to say I have NO GOOD memories of HRW during those times, either. You figure he's finally seen the light? I mean it does seem curious that he only NOW comes out with that extraordinary Op-Ed; and even more extraordinary that the NYT would publish it!

    ReplyDelete
  48. does anyone here believe (or know of a decent explanation for why others believe) that the "Joker" parodies are racist/offensive?

    Because they criticize Obama.

That's pretty much it. I've seen some lefties trying to jump through hoops to come up with a logical rationale as to why, but it all boils down to "all criticisms of Obama are racist".

    ReplyDelete
  49. JTK: the reason why they keep trying to play the race card is that they are bankrupt of ideas in all other areas.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Lincolntf: you do know that this raaaaacist image was actually created by a "Palestinian"-American arts student at U. of Illinois?

  51. JTK, I believe it is entrapment. However, he'll probably never get a government job again, and he'll be out a lot of money defending himself.

Good thing the last time I did classified work was 25 years ago, and the only thing I actually remember about it isn't classified; it is textbook stuff about measuring antennas. I couldn't tell anyone a thing about the actual antenna we were supposed to be testing because I left before we even had the scaled down test model, even if I could remember that kind of detail from that long ago.
And besides, I'd be very suspicious of calls like that.

Really. Between JamesTKirk, DEZ and myself, we have a significant number of posters here used to contact with aliens, but have we yet seen a thread with hot alien babes?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hey Kosh's Shadow - I don't know about the entrapment angle here; it isn't clear from the article as to who contacted whom in the first instance. I do note, however the following:
"The former scientist allegedly informed undercover FBI agent Leslie Martell on September 3, 2009 that in the past he had had top security clearance and had access to U.S. satellite information. According to an affidavit filed by Martell, Nozette allegedly said he would be willing to share this information in exchange for payment.

The affidavit further alleged that Nozette asked for an Israeli passport and said he would provide regular, continuing feeds of information.

On September 4, the agent met again with Nozette, who told him that he no longer had access to classified information but had it memorized. He also requested payments of under $10,000 in cash so that he would not have to report it to the Internal Revenue Service, reminding the agent, "They don't expect me to do this for free."

It would appear, if true, that Nozette wasn't doing this transfer of information out of love of Israel or betrayal of America, but for good ole MONEY. [nb,it isn't clear to me who he was referring to when he said "they" don't expect me to do it for free"]
I'd want to wait to see how this plays out -especially in terms of how he was contacted and how he came to offer information to folks he thought were Mossad Agents before I'd go about calling it entrapment.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Damn Dianna, I'm sorry to hear that. Are you okay?

  73. Realwest, the original article I read said he had been contacted by agents.
And his last classified position ended in 1999.
    This article has more
It seems they had reason to think he was doing something for other countries.
But it is clear the FBI contacted him first:
The affidavit by FBI agent Leslie Martell said that on Sept. 3, Nozette received a telephone call from an individual purporting to be an Israeli intelligence officer, but who was actually an undercover FBI agent.

  81. Zombie's report (bullet-point summary):

    * of all the groups protesting, the largest contingent were the conservative "tea partiers" unhappy with just about every aspect of the Obama regime. Which was quite a surprise to me, because never before had I encountered a Tea Party in San Francisco.

    * the strongest criticism came not from the right but from the left, as groups like World Wan't Wait lashed into Obama for failing to keep any of his anti-war promises from the campaign

    * What surprised me more than anything else were the vastly superior signs carried by the tea partiers as opposed to the leftists, who after all had decades of experience in honing their protest-sign skills. Instead, as seen in the photos above (and even moreso lower down in this essay), the left-wing signs tended to be wordy, or whiney, or obtuse, and above all humorless. The Tea Party signs, on the other hand, were funny, memorable, sarcastic, snappy, and concise. Setting aside any political biases, and judged purely on style, the Right handily bested the Left at this signage showdown.

    * Much has been made of the supposed extremism or threats of the "tea baggers," as their detractors call them. At other Tea Parties, protesters have been accused of racism and of fomenting insurrection; of being "birthers" (people who think Obama was born outside the U.S.); of bringing guns; and all sorts of nastiness. At the same time, many people have asked me why I never covered anti-Obama protests when I had covered anti-Bush protests so often in the past. Well, I never covered a Tea Party before simply because I had never been aware of one in my area before. This is the first one I learned of ... Conclusion: I can't vouch for what happened at other Tea Parties in other cities, but at this San Francisco protest I saw absolutely no evidence of racism, death threats, birtherism, guns, intimations of violence, insurrection, or treason. Just a lot of people who don't like Obama or his policies.

    * The loneliest man in San Francisco: The only person at the rally who welcomed Obama uncritically.

  84. Obama another Balloon Dad?
    Otis A. Glazebrook IV
It is interesting to see the Main Stream Media’s outrage over Richard Heene the alleged Balloon Boy Hoaxer. The following is from the N.Y. Daily News:
We've had enough of this couple, who thought it would be fun to fool the country into believing their 6-year-old son was in that runaway balloon - a hoax that had us all holding our breath.

The kids were practically blinking out hostage messages during the family's press conferences last week. After being used Thursday - as the whole world watched, fearing Falcon was dead - they were forced to endure even more media Friday.

All because their attention-craving dad, Richard Heene, hadn't gotten enough the day before.

The difference between Richard Heene and Barack Obama is that Obama holds our kids hostage to float the paper from his deficit balloons.

  88. Hey Kosh's Shadow - that article in the Jeruselum Post also stated:

"From 1998 to 2008, the complaint alleges, Nozette was a technical adviser for a consultant company that was wholly owned by the Israeli government. Nozette was paid about $225,000 over that period, the court papers say.

Then, in January of this year, Nozette allegedly traveled to another foreign country with two computer thumb drives and apparently did not return with them. Prosecutors also quote an unnamed colleague of Nozette who said the scientist said that if the US government ever tried to put him in jail for an unrelated criminal offense, he would go to Israel or another foreign country and "tell them everything" he knows."

As I said, I want to see what eventuates from all this, but it's not really entrapment if they think you are ALREADY committing a crime and they simply enable you to do it again (or do more of it).
But we have waaaay too little information to go on at this point.

Well that might me a church that I would go to. :)

But seriously, one thing I learned in Sunday School at the church I used to go to many, many years ago, was that a church isn't a building. A church is a gathering of like minded individuals worshipping God. There's a few good points in that article I think should be taken to heart.

In an exclusive interview with the TCOT Report, George Joseph, Republican Party Chairman of Oneida County, one of the eleven counties in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, today slammed Republican Party nominee Dede Scozzafava. This damaging news comes on the heels of Scozzafava’s ill advised attempt to intimidate a reporter from the Weekly Standard by calling the cops on him after he asked persistent questions about her position on card check legislation at a meeting held last night in Lowville, New York. Lowville is located in Lewis County, immediately to the north of Oneida County.

My driver apologized profusely for this, and added "it shames me to see these things happening when we have foreign visitors such as yourself". So he was definitely in no mood to go on a "stupid Americans" rant!

(In general, what Yanqui-bashing there is in Latin America does NOT paint us as stupid... quite the opposite, we're crafty imperialists. That said, I've NEVER experienced any serious anti-American sentiment, anywhere in Latin America, at a *personalized* level.)

Much like in Iran: IRAN DOUBLE-CROSSES OBAMA

OK, Obama, let me explain the Prisoner's Dilemma to you...

    ReplyDelete
  106. Whoa Kenneth- great damn article - so much so that I just have to quote the first several sentences:

"President Barack Obama just received a double slap in the face. Russia’s paramount leader, Vladimir Putin, in a display of steely contempt, has said “nyet” to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s entreaties to sanction the Iranians for developing nuclear materials for weapons use. Furthermore, Reuters reports that the Russians will not preclude the use of nukes preemptively — nearby or far away.

However the White House or Foggy Bottom spins it, Putin’s boorish refusal to play ball must be a jolt to our Nobel Laureate president, who, but a few short weeks ago, came to Putin lugging a hefty olive branch.

To Putin and, incidentally, to his hand-picked successor Dmitry Medvedev, the president gave the gift of the pulled plug — on elements of a land-based missile defense in Eastern Europe. Nothing expected in return — well, not entirely. There are always strings. But Mr. Obama expected nothing tangible in return. Not the relinquishing of one megaton of destruction. Not even a squirrelly pledge from Putin to keep his hands off the Ukraine or Georgia. Not even a bowl of Borscht.

What the president expected, one guesses, was consideration and cooperation. Giving the heave-ho to the Poles and Czechs was supposed to thaw Putin’s icy veins.

When Mrs. Clinton came a-knocking on behalf of Mr. Obama in a spirit of one-worldliness, Putin was supposed to demonstrate a readiness to put the kibosh on the mullahs’ nuclear ambitions.

Instead, Putin flatly refused. Talks with the Iranians, he argued, were underway. Sanctions would be premature. Let’s not act so precipitously, he counseled.

By refusing to join hands with Mr. Obama, Putin gave a big gift to the mullahs: the gift of time. More time to develop nuclear materials, leading to nuclear weapons capability. It’s the Putin Grand Stall; a gift that he may just keep giving to the Iranians if he can pull it off. By a degree of separation, though, it was really Mr. Obama’s gift to the Iranians. The president’s unilateral capitulation on missile defense telegraphed to Putin that he’s a Grade-A patsy. All Putin did was re-wrap Mr. Obama’s offering.

So, what President Obama is getting in return isn’t cooperation from the Russians, but a lesson in the often merciless law of unintended consequences. His ill-considered gesture toward the Russians makes a nuclear-armed Iran more likely, not less."

  107. I'm dealing with having wrecked my convertible last night

Sorry to here about your loss.

I ruined my most favorite car on the Bascom Ave exit of 280. It was a convertible too. It spun out when I hit a patch of water at the top of the exit. I spun around two and half times, praying that it would not flip, till I smashed it into the concrete center divider on the Bascom Ave overpass.

it still gives me the shivers to think about it. That was 15 years ago.

The good news is that you are still alive.

Happy birthday. Enjoy the blessing of being alive.

So long as we manage to survive the scary bits for a while, we are doing alright.

  108. Well, so much for the recession being over:

Housing starts flat in September at 590,000 pace
    Single-family building permits fall 3%

"WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- New construction on U.S. housing units was essentially flat in September at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 590,000, as a big drop in multifamily units was offset by an increase in starts of single-family homes, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.

With September's 0.5% estimated increase, housing starts have been flat for four straight months after a big rebound earlier in the year from historic lows. Since the bottom in January, housing starts have risen 21%.

August's starts were revised lower to a 587,000 pace from 598,000 previously reported.

After 14-straight quarters of declines, many economists expect that residential investment will finally add to gross domestic product growth in the current quarter, which ended in September."

What they mean by "add to gross domestic product" is that it will stop being a subtraction and hopefully be neutral.

But many experts were expecting to see a stronger report than this. This keeps on reminding me of Carter and the 70's. Get used to high unemployment folks, it's going to be with us for a long, long time. I am convinced that this Administration actually likes high unemployment cause it makes more people dependent upon government for help.

My word, how I miss President Reagan.

When China fell to the Communists, a lot of people asked "Who lost China?" and blamed Democratic policies. I recall that, during the Clinton Administration, when they were engaging Russia, they were worried about people asking "Who lost Russia?" The obvious answer was to deny that Russia was ever lost (or to cast sole blame on Bush).

President Barack Obama is considering all options to create jobs, including another stimulus package, while trying to pull the economy out of a deep recession and deal with a record deficit, White House advisers said Sunday.

With more than half of the $787 billion recovery package yet to be spent, Obama aides said the administration is not ready to commit to additional measures.

"Everything is on the table," senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said.

"You've got this huge national deficit and we've got to do what we can to bring that down. At the same time, it's important to stimulate the economy," Jarrett said. "Let's wait and see. Let's let the recovery bill do its job."

The Largest Denier of Health Care Claims Is Medicare
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 7:27 AM
    From Heritage:
According to AMA’s National Health Insurance Report Card, Medicare denies 6.85 percent of its claims, higher than any private insurer (Aetna was second, denying 6.80 percent of its claims), and more than double any private insurer’s average.

What’s fascinating is that The American Medical Association (AMA) has endorsed a public option, despite the fact that “some member physicians at the group’s annual meeting [in June] likened the notion to communism.”

    Here's how you create jobs:

    1. Cut taxes on private business.

    2. Treat private business with respect instead of something to be targeted and punished.

    3. Cut growth stifling regulation

    3. Cut federal spending so the dollar actually has value for something other than as a kleenex.

“There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves,” the opinion article stated. “By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation’s pennies and trying to preserve our country’s wealth and our economy’s viability to give all an opportunity to succeed.”
