ON THE LEFT: Gore Vidal

Breathtaking, on so many levels:

Author Gore Vidal Labels Polanski Victim a ‘Young Hooker’

Plenty of celebrities issued crazy statements in their efforts to defend director and rapist Roman Polanski but none went as far as author Gore Vidal did when he labeled Polanski's victim a "young hooker."

In an Oct. 28 interview with The Atlantic's John Meroney about a variety of topics, Vidal claimed he didn't "give a f---" about the Polanski case. "Look, am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she's been taken advantage of?"

Vidal claimed "there was a totally different story at the time that doesn't resemble anything that we're now being told," and pinned the blame for the outcry against Polanski on anti-Semitism.

"The media can't get anything straight. Plus, there's usually an anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing going on with the press - lots of crazy things," elaborated Vidal. "The idea that this girl was in her communion dress, a little angel all in white, being raped by this awful Jew, Polacko - that's what people were calling him - well, the story is totally different now from what it was then."

  1. "Young Hooker"??? Let's review, shall we?

On March 11, 1977, Polanski was arrested and charged with a number of offenses against a thirteen-year-old, Samantha Geimer, during an incident the day before at the Hollywood home of actor Jack Nicholson.[41] Geimer testified that Polanski gave her a combination of champagne and quaaludes, a sedative drug and muscle relaxant, and despite her repeated protests and being asked to stop, he performed oral sex, intercourse and sodomy upon her.[42][43][44][45] A grand jury decided to charge him with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under fourteen, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor.[46]

Oh. I see. He "paid" her with drugs and alcohol".

They just pretend to "care" - to care about women's rights, ending racism, ending poverty, etc... etc... ad nauseum... as a ploy for power.

You didn't think they actually cared, did you?

  7. If Gore Vidal had a daughter that Polanski raped, would he be so quick to defend him?

    Underage, it is rape. Period.

  12. "Plus, there's usually an anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing going on"

    Wow.

    Possible responses:

    1) But of course, we always give a pass to Christians who rape 13-year old girls.

    2) I'm curious, which is the cultural tradition that maintains that "fags" rape 13-year old girls?

    3) Um... and "fags", by the way... isn't that word "homophobic"?

POlanski was a dumbass too, though. He worked out a plea agreement way back then, and most of the serious charges were dropped, so he was facing statutory charges, rather than the even more serious initial charges.

But, since he was a dumbass and fled the country (in order to avoid 48 days in jail, and deportation) before sentencing, that plea agreement went tit's up. Heh.

Vidal, of course, is openly gay, so the basis for the scenario is somewhat unlikely. But assuming he did, I wonder if he wouldn't cheer that thought of his daughter being deflowered by such a wonderful genius as Polanski. /retch

  21. I have never read a word that ever told me Polanski's religious/ethnic background - and my assumption was that he was a Catholic, especially given his first name. I never heard Polanski referred to by any name other than his proper one, until people realized what he had done, and then he was generally called a child-raper. And what's with this "anti-fag" business? Who ever called Polanski a "fag", except Vidal, here?

Gore Vidal has always struck me as pretentious and a snob. This, however, is trying to excuse a fellow elitist, nothing more.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What is it with the left and "women are whores" theme we've got going today? Are their misogynistic masks slipping?

And they get away with it. Look at David Letterman. He crossed lines with what he said about women and children also - and he was cheered by his audience.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I remember reading some of Vidal's stuff which went on and on and yet on about the besetting sins of America from its founding.

I have to credit slogging through that bilge with helping to get me a-thinkin', "Why is it that lefties always seem to have nothing whatsoever good to say about the USA yet claim that they support it? Why do they clearly despise all the people who preceded them and yet claim to speak in the name of these same people?"

I got the impression that Vidal was playing remora, and latching his own causes for resentment onto the Polanski situation.

  27. Notice Vidal's "everything but the kitchen sink" approach here.

They only hate Roman because he's a Jew/"fag"/"Polacko"!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am not Jewish, but if I were, I think I'd find the mention of anti-Semitism in these remarks terribly offensive. I don't know a single Jewish person who would excuse Polanski's actions. Not ONE. Trying to connect those dots is really despicable.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Polacko - that's what people were calling him

And I want to add that I think there should be an exception for statutory rape when the accused is within 3 years or so in age of the victim, and it was consensual. That certainly isn't the case here.

BTW, I think the charge now, in Massachusetts, is called "child rape", not "statutory rape".

I've asked myself those same questions just from reading the news, buzz.

I find this new wave of leftist "patriotism" and hyper-vigilance over our rights (or what they imagine them to be) really odd, given the backdrop of the America-hate we've been witnessing since the sixties (and prior, I imagine...though I wasn't alive to see it).

They want to take my right to choose my health care away.
They take 40% of the product of my labor.
They are passing laws to control what I eat.
They want to control my thermostat, limit the size of my TV and pick the color and type of car I drive.

The only rights they are vigilant about protecting are those of people who'd blow them to kingdom come give half a chance.

The "rights" they want to protect aren't the ones as laid out by Adams, Jefferson and Madison. "Rights" to them are found in the writings of Gramsci, Marx and Mao.

A leftie talking about "rights" should be met with derisive laughter.
