Breathtaking, on so many levels:
Author Gore Vidal Labels Polanski Victim a ‘Young Hooker’
Plenty of celebrities issued crazy statements in their efforts to defend director and rapist Roman Polanski but none went as far as author Gore Vidal did when he labeled Polanski's victim a "young hooker."
In an Oct. 28 interview with The Atlantic's John Meroney about a variety of topics, Vidal claimed he didn't "give a f---" about the Polanski case. "Look, am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she's been taken advantage of?"
Vidal claimed "there was a totally different story at the time that doesn't resemble anything that we're now being told," and pinned the blame for the outcry against Polanski on anti-Semitism.
"The media can't get anything straight. Plus, there's usually an anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing going on with the press - lots of crazy things," elaborated Vidal. "The idea that this girl was in her communion dress, a little angel all in white, being raped by this awful Jew, Polacko - that's what people were calling him - well, the story is totally different now from what it was then."
First.
ReplyDelete"Young Hooker"??? Let's review, shall we?
ReplyDeleteOn March 11, 1977, Polanski was arrested and charged with a number of offenses against a thirteen-year-old, Samantha Geimer, during an incident the day before at the Hollywood home of actor Jack Nicholson.[41] Geimer testified that Polanski gave her a combination of champagne and quaaludes, a sedative drug and muscle relaxant, and despite her repeated protests and being asked to stop, he performed oral sex, intercourse and sodomy upon her.[42][43][44][45] A grand jury decided to charge him with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under fourteen, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor.[46]
Oh. I see. He "paid" her with drugs and alcohol".
What a POS. Both of them. Vidal and Polanski.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you expect. According to the left Polanski is an innocent victim. *spit*
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with the left and "women are whores" theme we've got going today? Are their misogynistic masks slipping?
ReplyDeleteYeahhhh, I get to show off my new spiffy avatar. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with the left and "women are whores" theme we've got going today? Are their misogynistic masks slipping?
ReplyDeleteThey just pretend to "care" - to care about women's rights, ending racism, ending poverty, etc... etc... ad nauseum... as a ploy for power.
You didn't think they actually cared, did you?
If Gore Vidal had a daughter that Polanski raped, would he be so quick to defend him?
ReplyDeleteUnderage, it is rape. Period.
Yeahhhh, I get to show off my new spiffy avatar. :)
ReplyDeleteNiiiice. You been working out?

When the left demonizes someone, it's generally done with racism and misogynistic comments.
Niiiice. You been working out?
ReplyDeleteHeck yeah. Going from a 5 oz point and shoot to a 3lb camera is a work out. :)
". . .well, the story is totally different now from what it was then."
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is, Vidal. It wasn't rape rape.//
Once more the masks come off.
ReplyDelete"Plus, there's usually an anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing going on"
ReplyDeleteWow.
Possible responses:
1) But of course, we always give a pass to Christians who rape 13-year old girls.
2) I'm curious, which is the cultural tradition that maintains that "fags" rape 13-year old girls?
3) Um... and "fags", by the way... isn't that word "homophobic"?
It certainly is, Vidal. It wasn't rape rape.//
ReplyDeleteAnd what I'd like to give Vidal, it wouldn't be an ass-kicking ass-kicking...
It certainly is, Vidal. It wasn't rape rape.//
ReplyDeletePOlanski was a dumbass too, though. He worked out a plea agreement way back then, and most of the serious charges were dropped, so he was facing statutory charges, rather than the even more serious initial charges.
But, since he was a dumbass and fled the country (in order to avoid 48 days in jail, and deportation) before sentencing, that plea agreement went tit's up. Heh.
I remember when I used to respect Gore Vidal. Of course, that was before I realized he was merely a hateful gasbag masking his derision for lesser mortals behind a fauxonian accent.

Vidal, of course, is openly gay, so the basis for the scenario is somewhat unlikely. But assuming he did, I wonder if he wouldn't cheer that thought of his daughter being deflowered by such a wonderful genius as Polanski. /retch
Bare: You've been reading my fanmail at other sites, I see.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I wish I had fan mail.
NJ election: Ballot stuffing via absentee ballots with mismatched signatures?
ReplyDeleteI can't see the name Gore Vidal without remember Lily Tomlin's telephone operator routine on Laugh-In where she was calling him Mr. Veedle.
ReplyDeleteI have never read a word that ever told me Polanski's religious/ethnic background - and my assumption was that he was a Catholic, especially given his first name. I never heard Polanski referred to by any name other than his proper one, until people realized what he had done, and then he was generally called a child-raper. And what's with this "anti-fag" business? Who ever called Polanski a "fag", except Vidal, here?
ReplyDeleteGore Vidal has always struck me as pretentious and a snob. This, however, is trying to excuse a fellow elitist, nothing more.
What is it with the left and "women are whores" theme we've got going today? Are their misogynistic masks slipping?
ReplyDeleteAnd they get away with it. Look at David Letterman. He crossed lines with what he said about women and children also - and he was cheered by his audience.
I remember reading some of Vidal's stuff which went on and on and yet on about the besetting sins of America from its founding.
ReplyDeleteI have to credit slogging through that bilge with helping to get me a-thinkin', "Why is it that lefties always seem to have nothing whatsoever good to say about the USA yet claim that they support it? Why do they clearly despise all the people who preceded them and yet claim to speak in the name of these same people?"

Speaking of openly gay celebs. . .
Dianna
ReplyDeletePolanski's mother died at one of the camps. Auschwiiz, maybe.
And what's with this "anti-fag" business? Who ever called Polanski a "fag", except Vidal, here?
ReplyDeleteI got the impression that Vidal was playing remora, and latching his own causes for resentment onto the Polanski situation.
Auschwitz!
ReplyDeleteNotice Vidal's "everything but the kitchen sink" approach here.
ReplyDeleteThey only hate Roman because he's a Jew/"fag"/"Polacko"!
I am not Jewish, but if I were, I think I'd find the mention of anti-Semitism in these remarks terribly offensive. I don't know a single Jewish person who would excuse Polanski's actions. Not ONE. Trying to connect those dots is really despicable.
ReplyDeletePolacko - that's what people were calling him
ReplyDeleteWhat people? Frankly, I've never heard anyone call ANYONE that word, at least in the English language. In what fever-dream world is Vidal living?
buzz:

"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

ReplyDeleteI always assumed he worshipped Jupiter, for the same reason!
I have never read a word that ever told me Polanski's religious/ethnic background - and my assumption was that he was a Catholic...
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of his religious/ethnic background either, until I read this quote of Vidal's.
It hasn't a thing to do with the way Polanski's actions have been responded to, that I can see.
He should just stick to making too-expensive shampoo/
ReplyDelete-Recycled from another blog
I remember years ago much being made of him being a child of the holocaust, a real rags to riches story. Survived pretty much on his own at a young age. Both parents in the camps. That may have been part of the poor Roman, he's such a genius and his wife and baby were murdered hype that went on after the rape.

No, no, no... you're thinking of Siegfried Sassoon.
/
Well relief is here and it's time for me to vamoose. See you folks all a little later on.
ReplyDeleteOR, I know Vidal is gay, and yes, I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
ReplyDeleteAnd I want to add that I think there should be an exception for statutory rape when the accused is within 3 years or so in age of the victim, and it was consensual. That certainly isn't the case here.
BTW, I think the charge now, in Massachusetts, is called "child rape", not "statutory rape".
OR - my bad. Its a real jungle out there . . no wait . . wrong Siegfried . . .oh forget it.

(Self-delete...repeating myself because I thought my reply timed out the first time.)
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason why I've never read any of the tripe offered by Mr. Vidal. Intellectual vacancy, moral bankruptcy, and literary malpractice I don't find very appealing.
ReplyDelete"Look, am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she's been taken advantage of?"
ReplyDeleteApparently not, you icky, creepy little man.

Why do they clearly despise all the people who preceded them and yet claim to speak in the name of these same people?"
ReplyDeleteI've asked myself those same questions just from reading the news, buzz.
I find this new wave of leftist "patriotism" and hyper-vigilance over our rights (or what they imagine them to be) really odd, given the backdrop of the America-hate we've been witnessing since the sixties (and prior, I imagine...though I wasn't alive to see it).
CC, didn't you say you were an R&B backup singer? I was listening to my soundtrack from The Commitments last night and I thought of you.
ReplyDeleteSpenser: Great movie and soundtrack. Haven't listened to that in years.
ReplyDeleteGreat movie and soundtrack
ReplyDeleteOh yeah.
I find this new wave of leftist "patriotism" and hyper-vigilance over our rights ....
ReplyDeleteWhere is the concern from the left over my rights?
I can't speak my mind for fear of hate speech.
I can't defend my self with firearms.
They want to take my right to choose my health care away.
They take 40% of the product of my labor.
They are passing laws to control what I eat.
They want to control my thermostat, limit the size of my TV and pick the color and type of car I drive.
The only rights they are vigilant about protecting are those of people who'd blow them to kingdom come give half a chance.
The "rights" they want to protect aren't the ones as laid out by Adams, Jefferson and Madison. "Rights" to them are found in the writings of Gramsci, Marx and Mao.
A leftie talking about "rights" should be met with derisive laughter.
Did someone request a video from The Commitments?
ReplyDelete"Do you not get it, lads? The Irish are the blacks of Europe. And Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland. And the Northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin. So say it once, say it loud: I'm black and I'm proud. "

ReplyDeleteI heard an interview with Roddy Doyle and he said that Ireland has become so f*#@#ng successful in the last couple of decades that that story no longer made any sense. Not that he wished for the bad old days, but...
ReplyDeleteSpenser: I am an R&B (soul) singer, yes - lead and background. Probably a better lead singer than a background singer, honestly. I've worked for and with some famous R&B singers - whose names you'd know but that I should probably keep to myself - so I have some cred as a background vocalist - though in both of those examples I worked as a lead singer too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for thinking of me! : )
and he said that Ireland has become so f*#@#ng successful in the last couple of decades that that story no longer made any sense.

et, have you ever read Pat Barker's "Eye in the Door" trilogy? Fictionalized account of (inter alia) the Owen/Sassoon wartime relationship. Pretty good, except for the rather gratuitous guy-on-guy action stuff (and I'm not talking combat), which didn't really advance the plot much.
