President Obama on Wednesday attempted to preempt the announcement that Social Security recipients will not get an increase in their benefit checks for the first time in three decades, encouraging Congress to provide a one-time payment of $250 to help seniors and disabled Americans weather the recession.

Plants Recognize Siblings: ID System In Roots

Susan Dudley, an evolutionary plant ecologist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and her colleagues observed that when siblings are grown next to each other in the soil, they “play nice” and don't send out more roots to compete with one another.

However, the moment one of the plants is thrown in with strangers, it begins competing with them by rapidly growing more roots to take up the water and mineral nutrients in the soil.

    I find this strangely frightening.

  30. VAT's dat?!

The Dangers of a Value-Added Tax
Our own simple general equilibrium model suggests that about 33% of the VAT tax is borne by people in proportion to their relative wage levels, about 17% in proportion to their capital, and about 50% in proportion to their consumption. Federal, state and municipal employees escape the implicit wage tax, but otherwise, the VAT is predominantly a tax on middle-class and upper-income earners and consumers.

Obama poses as the multilateralist, defers to the United Nations and has criticized ossified Cold War-era alliances. Judging by his actions and words, Obama views American habitual protection of an allied but military defenseless Europe as, well, kind of passé.

  42. WOW. Specter is losing all around in PA

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Pennsylvania voters shows 45% would vote for Toomey if the election were held today. Forty percent (40%) would vote for Specter, while six percent (6%) prefer a third option. Nine percent (9%) are undecided.

If Sestak wins the Democratic nomination, however, the race is a toss-up: 38% for Sestak and 37% for Toomey. In August, Sestak trailed Specter by 13 points in the race for the nomination. Rasmussen Reports will release new numbers in the Specter-Sestak race tomorrow at 7 am EDT.

Of course by 2010 there just MAY be a serious backlash against Democrats...

  50. Good morning.

The market was up about 1.5% yesterday based some company profit numbers that were a bit better than awful.

Some money is going back into the market just cause they are tired of sitting on the sidelines.

There is some hiring going on out there but it is mostly for jobs that are little better than minimum wage. That means that many folks will find that staying on unemployment is preferable for the time being than going back to work at low wage jobs. Therefore, do not expect to see an improvement to the unemployment situation out there.

And no one is immune to the lay off threat by the way. I know of attorneys who have been layed off, CPA's given the axe, I know of one University that has chopped the number of their tenured positions as people retire and is considering actually shutting down one entire academic department (that loses a lot of money) cause they just cannot afford to carry them anymore. The reduction of scholarship money from the State is going to have a profound impact on upper education in many states.

  53. It's official, seniors getting the shaft:
Social Security to Make it Official: No COLA

"The Social Security Administration makes it official Thursday: There will be no cost of living increase for Social Security recipients next year, the first year without one since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975."

    Why?

"Blame falling consumer prices for no automatic increase next year. By law, Social Security's cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, is pegged to inflation, which was negative this year, due largely to falling energy costs."

But yet their medicare costs are being increased,

Hey seniors, are you noticing a pattern yet under Obama?

  56. Morons in the media whistling in the dark about inflation.

Prices in U.S. Probably Climbed at Slower Pace in September

"Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Prices paid by U.S. consumers probably rose at a slower pace in September, showing inflation will not be a threat as the economy emerges from the recession, economists said before reports today.

The cost of living may have risen 0.2 percent after increasing 0.4 percent in August, according to the median of 79 projections in a Bloomberg News survey. Other reports may show manufacturing in the New York and Philadelphia regions continued to expand this month.

The worst economic slump since the 1930s has left unemployment at a 26-year high and record levels of homes sitting vacant, signaling companies and landlords will hold the line on prices in coming months. The lack of inflation may give the upper hand to the Federal Reserve policy makers who’ve said the central bank can keep interest rates low for a long time."

Ummm, measurable inflation is low right now cause almost 15 million people are out of work and so discretionary income and aggregate demand are down, you twits. Also, companies are cutting way back on production capacity to cut operation costs. Inventories are way down, capital equipment purchases are down, office space rental is way down. So when things do turn around, it will be very hard to jump production capacity quickly.

When employment starts inching backup, and it eventually will, you will see inflation go into double digits.

  60. Uh oh, bad news for Obama. The Fed is NOT shilling for Obama anymore. Get this:
Fed Officials Question Expansion’s Durability, Discuss More Aid

"Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve policy makers doubted the durability of the recovery and for the first time signaled they were open to boosting purchases of mortgage bonds to further prop up the housing market.

Some Federal Open Market Committee members argued that expanding their purchases above $1.25 trillion might help to “reduce economic slack more quickly,” according to minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s Sept. 22-23 meeting released yesterday in Washington.

Policy makers considered a relapse into recession a bigger risk than a near-term rise in prices, the minutes show. They predicted “cautious” consumer spending, business investment and hiring. If those conditions persist into 2010, the Fed may extend the housing-debt purchase program beyond its current March 31 end-date, economists said."

if this holds true, the Democrats are going to have a hard time next fall in the elections.

That tells me that the MSM will launch even harsher all out attacks on anybody and every body who is not as shameless a sycophant for the Democrats as they are.

Look for even more bashing of Limbaugh, FOX news, Bush, Palin, Beck, O'Reilly, Levin, Hannity, people of faith, Wall Street, and business in general and anybody who disagrees with them.

Any Republican who tries to take a leadership role on the national scene will be targeted for personal destruction.

The MSM is all in on this. They are active participants, using their media to accomplish their political agenda.

    Great question.

First, make sure your retirement investments are diversified, with maybe a weighting towards gold and commodities do help keep your purchasing power.

Second, if you have to have debt, lock in the low rates of right now.

Third, if you have big purchases to make in the next 5 years and have a stable job, make the purchase now before prices start escalating.

Fourth, (and this has some risk to it) you might consider locking in a personal line of credit at your local bank if you can lock in low rates, to set yourself up for potentially being able to legally arbitrage down the road. In other words, you might be able to set yourself up where you can borrow money at say, 5%, and invest it in a year or two at 8% or 9% and pocket the difference at no risk.

Now, the will be annual"availability" fee for that line of credit even if you do not use it, but it is worth thinking about.

  66. Obama Becomes Target on Afghan Troop Review as Pressure Rises

"Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama’s methodical review of Afghanistan war strategy has made him the target of criticism from Republicans and intensified lobbying from advocates and opponents of more U.S. troops.

Obama held the fifth in a series of White House Situation Room meetings with advisers on Afghanistan yesterday, and plans another next week. The president, a former law instructor, poses rigorous questions and encourages robust arguments at the sessions, senior adviser David Axelrod said.

“This is a ferociously difficult issue, and it bears a lot of thought and reflection and review,” Axelrod said in an interview. “Every assumption needs to be tested.”

The measured approach holds advantages and risks. Obama’s advisers say it will help convince a war-weary public to support his ultimate decision.

At the same time, it has subjected him to mounting pressure from different sides of the debate over force levels -- and complaints from Republicans who had supported Obama when he added troops in March."

Hey Obama, it's simple. Either let our troops go all out to win it or get our troops out.

Stop hanging them out to dry like this.
