Late Sunday, the industry trade group America's Health Insurance Plans sent its member companies a new accounting firm study that projects the legislation would add $1,700 a year to the cost of family coverage in 2013, when most of the major provisions in the bill would be in effect.
Premiums for a single person would go up by $600 more than would be the case without the legislation, the PricewaterhouseCoopers analysis concluded in the study commissioned by the insurance group.

As highly scrutinized as any young man will be who deigns to take Princess out someday (far away), I actually feel sorrier for the girls who will date our 3 sons. My wife will not lightly hand them over to dimwits or hussies.

The only downside is it's in another city, but he'd be home every weekend. We could use some prayers from the praying types here, and good thoughts from everyone else.

One of the most difficult things for the right right now is that any criticism of Obama and his policies is labeled as racist. The left is weilding race as a weapon. According to the left, and by proxy, the MSM, you are arguing with Obama's race whenever you argue against his policies.

ReplyDeleteFluffy, yes it's bad. I think the state-wide avg. is still around 16% and we're on the "good" side of the state but I know some counties are well into the 20's and that's just official. If you take into account people like me (working P/T but needing more) and those who have completely given up and small business owners who are way down, the real number is well over 30.

ReplyDeleteI was unemployed 6 months last year through the holidays. Landed a great job in Feb. Company closed it's doors in June. Just got a new job. Pay is better than expected but still 1/2 what I made a year ago. It is what it is.
VT, the MSM and the Dems can squawk about racism all they want. Most Americans aren't racist and they know their criticism is not based on race. I think ultimately it will backfire on them, because people resent being called racists when they're not.

ReplyDeleteI find the mobipocket reader to be better than Barnes and Noble; the latter is still not responsive enough, but much better with the latest Blackberry update (their firmware, not BN)
And there is a free converter, so I can take all the free ebooks and convert them, but I still have a way to go through the Baen free library.

We go to Walmart rarely; typically when my wife needs to get clothes for her incarcerated clients so they aren't on trial in a prison uniform.
ReplyDeleteBut you get the same junk at Kmart, Target, etc., now, because those stores can't compete with Walmart if they don't, and the companies that made better and more expensive stuff went out of business or moved manufacturing to China.

ReplyDeleteboldandbald, a friend of mine has a Kindle and I covet it mightily. If you get the leather case, it has the feel of a book but it's not too heavy. The price has dropped again and the books are very inexpensive to download. I haven't read on it for an extended period, so I don't know if there's an eyestrain problem. I think it would be great for someone who travels a lot and doesn't want to bring a dozen books on a long trip.

On some good news, we just opened a box of cold-weather gear sent to us from some generous friends with kids a little bigger than ours. Hanna Anderson and LL Bean and all of it very clean and lightly used (they live in VA). I was very happy as our kids got excited opening the boxes and trying stuff on (our kids are very thankful and down-to-earth) but I was gobsmacked when my wife showed me the $ that this stuff goes for in the Hanna Anderson catalog. $85 for snowpants? Oh well, it's well-made and much appreciated.

ReplyDeletesb5K, a couple of years ago my daughter (the funny one) had an assignment to go through a store such as Wal-Mart or Target and locate about a dozen different products and write down what country they came from. Even in Target, the majority were made in China.

If you buy an ebook, they can take it back at any time, or you can lose it when your devices die or are upgraded. A paper book can be shared with anyone; an ebook has copy protection, region codes, and so forth. If you buy an ebook, you do not own it and you have only limited rights and access to it.

I support Buy American until it lands near protectionism. I remember studying the shoe industry in my econ classes. It was deigned a protected, defense-related industry which falsified the market. We then had millions of American families overpaying for kids shoes to temporarily protect the jobs of thousands of Americans.

boldandbald: The only joke that's directly about home is about Mommy's drinking. It's completely a joke - I drink, but not to excess, so I find it hilarious. She's also got some material about being in high school (she's a senior). My favorite is about setting her GPS to a British accent "because I'm secretly hoping it will take me to Hogwarts."

Ahhhhh, a subject near and dear to my heart. :D
I think it's a great organization to get into. It teaches a lot of good skills, organizational and otherwise. You are in a fairly healthy enviroment with like minded peers. It has all sorts of great summer opportunities. It's mostly free. And it will have a good impact on a young teenagers life.
Disclaimer: I was in Air Cadets from 13 to 19, made Flight Sargeant and recieved a civilian glider scholarship. Of course I am going to give a glowing recommendation. :)

BOZEMAN - Record-low temperatures in southwestern Idaho are threatening to destroy at least a portion of this season's crop of seed potatoes.
Spuds still in the ground could be saved by a layer of snow; a dusting had fallen on Bozeman and the surrounding region by Sunday.
Nina Zydak, director of the Montana State University Potato Lab, said most area farmers have already started digging.
But many farmers expect to lose some of their potatoes.
"It's over," Larry Van Dyke, who owns Van Dyke Farms in Townsend, told the Bozeman Chronicle.
He says when it's this cold for too long, the frost penetrates and the taters are toast.
The main goal now is to make sure the spoiled potatoes don't make it into his cellar.
Temperatures on Saturday evening dipped to 17 degrees; the last time it was this cold, this early, in southwestern Idaho was more than two decades ago, in 1985.

One thing you should do Kenneth is go around to the different Squadrons here in Toronto and figure out which one is best for her. Easily done if you have a car. Another thing if she does join make sure that she is aware of the fact that the uniform is her responsibility alone. I learned how to do laundry and iron clothes because of cadets. As well each unit usually does a yearly trip somewhere that will cost some money, so budget for that or have her earn a little extra cash. If she joins she will be taking classes as well pertaining to aviation. One book to look for is "From the Ground Up", essentially a "Ground School" text book that's used in flying circles. It can probably be picked up used cheaply. Also let her know that people will yell at her from time to time. It's not personal, in fact it's very impersonal. Goes with the enviroment, just the NCO's doing their jobs in training. There will also be cliques, can't get away from it really. Good luck and I hope she goes the distance.

As for cliques, well, that's a fact of teenage life, at school or anywhere. Learning how to deal with cliques is part of growing up. She does her own laundry already, so I figure she will manage to look after her uniform just fine.
