A Dogged Taliban Chief Rebounds, Vexing U.S.
In late 2001, Mullah Muhammad Omar’s prospects seemed utterly bleak. The ill-educated, one-eyed leader of the Taliban had fled on a motorbike after his fighters were swiftly routed by the Americans invading Afghanistan.
Much of the world celebrated his ouster, and Afghans cheered the return of girls’ education, music and ordinary pleasures outlawed by the grim fundamentalist government.
In Today's Viral World, Who Keeps a Civil Tongue?
Late last month, Charisse Carney-Nunes fired up the computer at her home in Northeast Washington to check her e-mail. Her brain already was on morning drive time: breakfast for the kids, her day's work at a government agency. She glanced down at her screen, then froze.
"Ms. Carney-Nunes," began the e-mail from Michelle Malkin, a best-selling and often inflammatory conservative writer with a heavily trafficked Web site. "I understand that you uploaded the video of schoolchildren reciting a Barack Obama song/rap at Bernice Young elementary school in June. I have a few quick questions. Did you help write the song/rap and teach it to the children? Are you an educator/guest lecturer at the school? Did you teach about your book, 'I am Barack Obama' at the school? Your bio says you are a schoolmate of Obama. How well-acquainted are you with the president?"
Clinton: We won't wait for Iran forever
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Sunday said the world "will not wait indefinitely" for Iran to live up to its international obligations regarding its nuclear program.
Clinton said in London on Sunday that a recent meeting in Geneva that saw Iran and six world powers resume nuclear talks was "a constructive beginning, but it must be followed by action."
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who Clinton met with in London, said the Islamic republic would never have a better opportunity to establish normal ties with the rest of the world, Reuters reported

ReplyDeleteBulldog edition
ReplyDeleteFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bulldog edition refers to an early edition in the press cycle of a newspaper or other print publications.
For instance, the Sunday New York Times publishes its bulldog edition, about 100,000 copies, for distribution around the country, at about noon on Saturday. Other large metropolitan newspapers in the United States may offer a local Sunday bulldog edition for delivery to subscribers and available at newsstands and in racks on Friday or Saturday.
Although the origin of the term is unclear, the Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins suggests "the term dates back to New York City’s newspaper wars of the 1890s, when rival papers were competing for morning readers with special editions sold by street vendors very early in the day. These papers were baptized 'bulldogs' presumably because the publishers fought like bulldogs over circulation."[1]
Didn't know that, interesting.
ReplyDeleteDid you get my e-mail,JCM ?
You want 2 & 3 ?
FORTH!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I bought my latest computer right before Vista was released so it came with XP installed and I got a coupon for Vista, which I redeemed, but never installed. Today I decided I'd install Vista so I could upgrade to Windows 7. I boot up the "upgrade assistant" disc. On the first screen it does a hardware compatibility check. Everything's cool except . . . wait for it . . .
ReplyDelete"Windows XP is not Windows Vista Capable", end of installation.
WELL, LIKE DUH, NO [EXPLETIVE DELETED] [EXPLETIVE DELETED] SHERLOCK!
Not helpful.
/oh well, probably saved me from doing something I'd regret anyway, XP works fine, I guess I'll just wait until I buy a new box to upgrade the OS
Good morning y'all - from a coolish (57 degrees going up to 72 degrees) cloudy and rainy Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteHope everyone is doing well this morning!
BTW, JCM - I went to your link to Shiek Omar and couldn't get back to C2 without just closing out and starting again.
ReplyDeleteHowever, what I found most telling in the article was the following:
Richard Barrett, a former British intelligence officer now monitoring Al Qaeda and the Taliban for the United Nations, argues that Mullah Omar has learned the lesson of 2001. If the Taliban regain power, he said, “they don’t want Al Qaeda hanging around.”
He added, “They want to be able to say, ‘We are a responsible government.’ ”
Indeed, in his Sept. 19 statement, Mullah Omar made such an assertion: “We assure all countries that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as a responsible force, will not extend its hand to cause jeopardy to others.”
Mr. Riedel, who helped devise the Afghanistan strategy now being rethought, scoffs at such pronouncements as “clever propaganda.”
“We’ve been trying for 13 years to get the Taliban to break with Al Qaeda and turn over bin Laden, and they haven’t done it,” Mr. Riedel said. “Whatever the bond is between them, it’s stood the test of time.”
And all I can say is that it's too bad that the Bush administration's strategy towards Afghanistan is being re-thought other than in terms of outting more US boots on the ground and US aircraft in the Skies.
Good Morning Real
ReplyDeleteI believe that Carolina is going to beat my Redskins today and have put my money in the appropriate places.
PIMF: putting more US boots.....
ReplyDeleteSigh.

Hey Truck Monkey - you are betting against your
ReplyDeleteRedskins?
I haven't been following pro-football as closely as I used to, in fact I don't even know if Eli Manning is going to play for the Giants since all I heard last Monday was that he had "bruised his heel" and I've been a Giants fan for over 50 years!!!
And, to top it all off, I have a gut feeling that the Redskins will win today (shish - I live in Carolina football country -where the local TV news show has a full one hour HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP ever Friday night from 11PM to 12:00 Midnight!)!
Hey Real
ReplyDeleteI know that you are a displaced New Yorker. How 'bout them Yankees? Beat team $$ can buy.
Yep. Absolutely right. What, are you jealous that YOUR TEAM (the Nats?) won't spend that money and then share their money with the rest of the league?!
ReplyDeleteKillian,

I don't follow baseball any longer. I used to when the Orioles were worth watching. Now? Feh.
ReplyDeleteBaseball bores me. I might watch a little playoff ball when it counts.
*ducks* - won't help ya JCM, cause I've now remembered which keys to start putting my fingers beroe I eqf5 fgkng!
ReplyDeleteBut hey - nevermind that silly Windows 7, now we know that MS is coming out with 8 and then gonna rush to 9!!!
All I know is that MS has played too many games with me. I started with 386 and have faithfully "upgraded" through to XP-Pro which promptly burned out the motherboard and developed a "tic" in the HD, and since Best Buy couldn't fix the motherboard in 3 tries (in one of them, one the Geek Squad guy got here, I had HIM open the box the new motherboard came in, had HIM open the shiny silvery plastic outter bag and as HE pulled it out of the bag..........a capacitor fell off the motherboard).
So Best Buy gave me a VISTA and I'm staying with it until IT crashes and burns then going to Apple which I understand has NEVER BUILT A BAD COMPUTER. Not Ever.
:)
Microsoft ----- The best Apple sales man ever!
ReplyDeleteJCM - I'm sure as hell hoping your Apple has Word as a software component!
ReplyDeleteNot to mention SpellCheck which mine has apparently decided to take at least a three day weekend off!
Real, I've migrated to NeoOffice an Open Office build of the open source office suit. It's completely compatible with MSOffice formats.

What happened to global warming?
ReplyDeleteBy Paul Hudson
Climate correspondent, BBC News
This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.
But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.
And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.
So what on Earth is going on?
Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man's influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming.
They argue that there are natural cycles, over which we have no control, that dictate how warm the planet is. But what is the evidence for this?
Hey JCM, aside from not understanding what the hell you mean when you say "an Open Office build of the open source office suit It's completely compatible with MSOffice formats." (first of all what's an open source office suit - a snuggie in pinstripes? Or did you mean suite?!) I'd appreciate it if y'all could check your e-mail!
ReplyDeleteWeapons failed US troops during Afghan firefight
ReplyDeleteIn the chaos of an early morning assault on a remote U.S. outpost in eastern Afghanistan, Staff Sgt. Erich Phillips' M4 carbine quit firing as militant forces surrounded the base. The machine gun he grabbed after tossing the rifle aside didn't work either.
When the battle in the small village of Wanat ended, nine U.S. soldiers lay dead and 27 more were wounded. A detailed study of the attack by a military historian found that weapons failed repeatedly at a "critical moment" during the firefight on July 13, 2008, putting the outnumbered American troops at risk of being overrun by nearly 200 insurgents.
/not good
JCM - re: your linked article on global warming- y'all ought to read it to your little ones at night; I nearly fell asleep twice while reading it! LOL.
ReplyDeleteBut I know that BBC correspondent attended a modern school of journalism, cause he ended his entire article with the following:
"One thing is for sure. It seems the debate about what is causing global warming is far from over. Indeed some would say it is hotting up."
ROTFLMAO!!
Killian - I'm not at all surprised at that report. The M4 is closer to the CAR 15 I used than anything else the US Army is using and the MAJOR problem with it is when it's engaged in extended periods of automatic fire - you'll note that in your article it said that troops fired their weapons until the barrels were "white hot".
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to comprehend how the hell the DoD could possibly ask troops to use a weapon that fails when fired for extended time periods on full auto.
Why the hell don't we just adopt the damn AK-47 and let it go at that?

MS Office, is a "suite" of software, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. There are other out there. Open source is free to anyone as is the source code so everyone with code skills can improve it add features.
Best thing is it's free, and continually updated.
Since MS runs the computer world other software has to be compatible.
Good morning, again.
ReplyDeleteHey {real}! I'm offering to take the Bucs with 45 points, but can't seem to get any takers! ($30million under the cap...I wonder why the Bucs suc.)

This, if true, is despicable.
/Dammit and WTF!?!
JCM - I've now sent TWO e-mails to you - have you received them yet?!
ReplyDeleteGood morning {gettinby} - hope you're well today!
ReplyDeleteAnd methinks we need to know a LOT more about what happened before we can talk about how despicable our weapons - and the M4 in particular-really are!
Hmmmmm something be wrong with either my computer or my broadband or my e-mail cause I cc'd myself (YES, I did it correctly) on my 2nd e-mail to JCM 7 minutes ago and I haven't received my cc copy yet!

ReplyDeleteGot back from church; two middle children have been singing ever since. Number 2 son is in the choir and has been singing "In the name of Jesus" over and over and over again. Little sister has been singing "Alleluia!"
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all be able to feel that way all the time?
With that going on in the house, it's hard for me to be in a bad mood.
