NFL Week Four - OPEN THREAD

From RB: Good afternoon! As our weekly celebration of Football Day continues, we once again open up an open thread for football, news, and the like. So, get your beverages of choice, your gametime snacks, and enjoy the company of good friends!

Update: Breaking - Restaurant worker: I was fired over Big Ben's beef

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A former restaurant worker claims he was fired because he had demanded to see identification for a young-looking woman at Ben Roethlisberger's table where the NFL quarterback and his friends were drinking.

I sometimes think editors need to go back to "Headline School". Anyway, continue!

  8. My favorite food -- sheesh -- that would be a tough one.

For lunch today I made a frittata with onions, garlic, and manchego cheese and fried red potatoes.

Tonight I'll do my usual -- pizza, probably one thin crust and one Chicago style.

  29. So, I just found out that my BiL and SiL are planning to not vaccinate their new baby! They say her sister had an autistic kid and the link was "proven". What do you say to that? If it's already in the family and I talk them into vaccinating and then the kid becomes autistic, obviously that would be a problem but they'd be endangering my kids if they didn't so what to do?

  43. Great read:

What’s the Difference Between a Conservative and a Liberal?

People often wonder what is the difference between a conservative and a liberal. The simple fact of the matter is that the major difference is that conservatives wonder first what it is they are responsible for while liberals wonder first what everyone else should be doing for them.

Here are some brief rules of thumb:

    • If a conservative sees a U.S.flag, his heart swells with pride.
    • If a liberal sees a U.S. flag, he feels shame.

    • If a conservative doesn’t like guns, they don’t buy them.
    • If a liberal doesn’t like guns, then no one else should have one either.

    • If a conservative is a vegetarian, he won’t eat meat.
    • If a liberal is, they want to ban all meat products for everyone.

    • If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat it.
    • If a liberal see an enemy he wonders what he can do to appease him.

    • If a conservative is homosexual, he’ll quietly enjoy his life.
    • If a liberal is homosexual, he’ll demand everyone get involved in his bedroom activities.

    • If a successful conservative is black or Hispanic, he’ll see himself as having succeeded on his own merits.
    • Successful liberal minorities still claim “racism” and want government to give them even more.

    • If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to work to better his situation.
    • A liberal wants someone else to take care of him.

    • If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.
    • If a liberal doesn’t like a radio show, he demands that the station be shut down or censored.

    • If a conservative is a non-believer, he just doesn’t go to church.
    • Non-believing liberals demand that everyone cease believing and demands churches be censored.

    • If a conservative needs health care, he shops for it, or chooses a job that provides it.
    • Liberals demand that everyone else provide him with healthcare for free.

    • If a conservative sees a law, he thinks long and hard before suggesting a change.
    • If a liberal sees a law he assumes it is just a suggestion and does what he wants anyway.

    • Conservatives feel there is a right and wrong.
    • Liberals feel that nothing is really wrong… unless it is believed by a conservative.

    • Conservatives believe in freedom, responsibility, tradition, and self-reliance.
    • Liberals believe in license, government restrictions, upending tradition, and collectives.

If you hear about any of these it is already to late. You are sick and contagious days before the symptoms even appear. You SIL and BIL are making life threatening decisions on BAD information. Giver them the information. Let them speak/read papers from distinguished doctors. If none of this changes their minds they will have to get used to smaller family gatherings. Sorry to be so strong on this. Your job is to do what is best for your family. You can't fix stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Spenser with an S: First off, I want your Bajan pork recipe.

Second, if your children are properly immunized, they're in no danger. If your new niece or nephew is not immunized, he or she is in danger and is endangering any unimmunized person in the immediate vicinity. There isn't always any warning - after all, someone has to be the first with the measles or whatever. The best you can do is provide them with accurate, authoritative information on the subject and hope they listen. There's still a constitutional right in this country to be an idiot.

  50. Whoa! What happened to my manly NFL logo that I uploaded when I scheduled the thread?

  52. Geez, did anybody catch Terry Bradshaw's message to Brett Favre today? (I was in and out of sleep but woke up long enough to push the little red button on my TiVo remote.)

OUCH. That'll hurt Brett. I know it will. Bradshaw once thought a lot of him (and still thinks he's a great player) but wow...pretty much flat out called him a liar. Straight talk, that was. Ouch.

I actually enjoyed it. (Though I'm a Packer fan and don't like what he's done at ALL, I don't hate Brett...but Bradshaw is right, imo.)

  56. Hi, gettinby! You know, we always planned a recipe thing, but we figured it would go in the pub where you'd find your fruitcup and stuff like that...we're kind of adjusting as we go, but it'll be somewhere. I do think the Hardcover Cafe might be a nice place for something like that...books, recipe books, coffee, etc.

I know that's a popular topic for a lot of people here. I personally can't cook my way out of a wet paper bag, but we definitely plan on doing something like that.

  62. Well Thank you. I always knew there was someplace I belonged.
Spent all of today entertaining the Bishop at the 60th anniversary of our Parish. He's a good speaker, and he tells funny jokes. There were so many priests on the altar that I wondered who was left back at the cathedral to monitor the games in Dublin, until I realized the Bishop isn't Irish and wouldn't be monitoring them anyway. So for all of you who do monitor the Dublin games and don't need subtitles here you go:
This droch Dublin derby leaves us síos san dumps
And I am dreadfully sorry, but I've not a clue what it means.
Well there you go, all caught up now.

There is a certain amount of "herd immunity" when a high percentage of the population is vaccinated that protects those few who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons. If you are properly immunized, you're fine no matter what your in-laws do. The danger is to other unimmunized people.I tried to find a few easy-to-understand links for you to share with your family. Unfortunately, the anti-vaxers have pretty much spammed Google with their nonsense and I don't have the time to sort through the links to find something that's legitimate but not written at the Ph.D. level. Maybe someone else knows where to find good information. I really wish you luck because your little niece or nephew's health is at stake.

Air India - Perhaps a bus trip would be in order.
    Lima beans - *clunk*

Hi enuff! Good to see you.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Re autism? It angers me so much that I will have to be careful in what I say. I am a retired RN, and all 4 of my kids, and my 3 grandkids have had each and every immunization required. To me, unless there is an allergy, there is no reason not to be vaccinated at the proper time. I was a kid during a wicked polio epidemic, and was at summer camp for 8 weeks. We were quarantied, and our families could not visit. 2 or 3 kids in my public school had po;i, as I found out when I came home. THere were no mumps, measles, chickenpox vaccines back then, either. I had every one of them, as did my kids.

Now? It is a different world.

To me? Not vaccinating a child is akin to child abuse.

  95. I had measles as a kid -- caught if before the vaccine made it to our school. I was 7 and to this day I remember the halucinations I had from my fever. And since then I've had to wear glasses -- when I came back to school after being out for who knows how long I couldn't see the board any more.

My kids have been vaccinated for everything. As for side effects, they're all nuts, but I think that's genetic.

To me? Not vaccinating a child is akin to child abuse.
    ---
Thank you Nana for that article. Your experience is sadly long forgotten obviously to those anti-vaxers.
My estranged (yet to be divorced) wife very nearly cried as she tried to warn me off the flu-vaccination I was trying to gonna get. I teach and have contact with approximately 150 people up-close.
No way anyone, not even her and her esoteric tears are gonna stop me from getting my shot.

  100. Lucius,

Sadly, there are still people who need to blame someone or something, and it seems that the non-vaxxer movement don't dare recognize that thimerosol has been out of vaccines for decades, and there never was anyone who could prove a connection.

IIRC, the swine flu vaccine may have it it in it, but that does not bother me.

I remember, also, how sick I was when I had the regular measles...and the mumps? One side first, and on the last day of being contagious? You guessed it! The other side.

As for my 4 kids? Each one got the chicken pox on the last day of incubation of their sibling...and the youngest was still in diapers!

They are perverse, I tell you!

And with the numbers of people here and in the UK? We are seeing mini-epidemics, and the whooping cough, along with the measles are the most prevalent.

There are school districts that demand certification, but others? Far too lax. And remember when we all had to have a smallpox vax? I still have a tiny remnant of the scar. Now? We rarely see one. It was eradicated because of world-wide vaccinations. I imagne they still have some in a lab, in case...

  101. Callahan,

This is a subject that as a retired RN, I am very concerned about. At age 71? I remember still all the epidemics, and am shocked that well-meaning, and usually very bright people, we see this denial, and incomprehensible lack of knowledge that keeps innocent babies, toddlers and school kids neglected.

You are a teacher? There are some very lucky children who are in your classes. Sad re your estranged wife and her fear of vaccines. So many people here are scared witless of the swine flu vaccine, but so many still remember what happened years ago with another swine flu variant and Guillain-Barré.

It is on TV now, re people refusing the new one..if I can save the article I will email it to you.

  102. NY Nana, they do have some live smallpox at the CDC, under very tight security. I don't know if there's smallpox vaccine in storage somewhere. They could make it from the sample if they had to, I guess.

I heard once that there's a second sample held in the former Soviet Union. I don't even want to think about that. If the wrong people got ahold of it, the world's entire population under 40 years old could be infected. In the 18th century, about 70% of people survived smallpox, but I doubt so many would if it were unleashed today.

Thank you - but - I teach computer skills for immigrants for them to be able to prepare their CVs. That makes them more able to compete for jobs.
These 150 people I meet daily so there is ample possibilities to infection.

Thanks! I thought that it was the CDC, and I hope it will never be necessary to use it.

As for the Russia that seems to be turning back into the USSR? Frightening. Just frightening. 3 of my kids are over 40, 1 in his late 30's, and my 3 little grandkids? I shudder.

    Nice to see you. :)

  106. Hi everyone! I'm back!

A few things re: immunization - I did not vaccinate my girls until they were 6 months. They were breastfed and had immunity through me, and at 6 months, were big enough to handle the jolt to the system a vac brings. I do not regret this decision, though my medical career husband thought I was a freak.

Perhaps in your discussion you can bring this "happy medium" to the table. Also, I refused the live virus polio - now the dead version is all they give due to lowered risk of side effects.

There is risk with vaccines - but the benefits outweigh those risks.

I am rather optimistic not about the sheer numbers of people infected but about the percentages.
In the 18th century people were by far worse of concerning malnourishment, sanitation and medical treatments.
I am very confident that many outbreaks wouldn't kill off that many people as in the 18th century. Having said that there is great variation as to the effects malnourishment, sanitation and medical treatments have on the different diseases. Some epidemics like flu just plain love those 18th century conditions while smallpox, mumps and measles don't really care.

We could use you here, and I pray that you get your visa soon...what you are teaching is invaluable.Even here, a large number of people do not have a clue as to how to prepare a CV.

And yes, the level of contagion can be dreadful. Here, so many school systems are thinkng of closing, but sadly, there is a lot of opposition. And the fear of immunizing? Epidemic in and of itself.

IMHO? We are still not adequately prepared for it.

  109. Good grief. The Ravens lose and Dallas is playing like a bunch of girls.

  112. Hey Y'all - REALWEST here! How is everyone doing today?
I see my NY Giants are now 4-0 on the season and that's good news to me!
How did the rest of y'all make out?

    ReplyDelete
  113. I have 2 teams and am waiting for a miracle play by Dallas. DAMMIT! That wasn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  114. well, nothing left to do now except eat my leftovers from dinner last night, I guess. Can we get a new non-football thread?

    so depressing.

  115. Uh, I gather by the responses I've received to my question that Army Wife and Erik The Red aren't doing so well with their teams?!

  116. Hi Realwest,
My FC Werder Bremen are fourth now in the national league.
    Woot!

  118. This was a bad weekend for me. At least Baltimore showed up for their game. Dallas? Not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hey real or C3PO I have no real favorite. But I did pick DalASS to win today. Good thing it was not for money.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I've been a Dallas fan since the age of 3. They ONLY thing that made me view off course was when the Ravens arrived on the seen because I was in Baltimore when that happened - so it was really cool. Darn you, Tony Romo!!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Hey Callahan23 - Uh, no see I meant American footlball, not soccer! And if your club is now fourth in the league is that a good thing?
How many teams in the league my friend?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Hey Army Wife - well maybe they just didn't bring their A game today?
I mean even if a team goes undefeated all season, that's no guaranty that they'll win the BIG ONE!
Oh, wait, your Cowboys are in the same division as my Giants!
    Well, there's always next year!
    /ducks to avoid incoming!

  123. I'll start a non-football thread. Let me find some decent fodder. Give me ten minutes or so. : )

  124. Hey Erik - the name is realwest, not that C3PO crap that Typepad insists on giving me!
Good thing you didn't have any real money on that game!

    ReplyDelete
  125. RW - Sigh. So, anybody want to tell ghost stories?

(trying to find a subject far, far away from football)

    ReplyDelete
  126. Realwest, I know, I know ;-)
my team came from way down bottom of the league of 18 teams in the premier league.
So fourth is a good thing. ;-)

Back to your regular program of NFL!

  127. Callahan,

It is now appearing in a number of states, and it is hitting kids and younger people. It seems that the elderly are not getting it. This would indicate, I think, that this one is a variant of a similar flu....but this is rather early to begin with, for influenza outbreaks of this magnitude.

BBL...and if you are asleep? Sweet dreams!

  128. Hi Correspondence Committee - well if you must find a new thread do what you must.
I could talk about the Giants all day!

  129. Is the Pub open on a Sunday? I need to drown my sorrows.

  130. Fourth out of 18 is pretty good I'd say! When does the season end and how (championship game or just who wins the most gets the championship?

  131. Pub will be open tonight, ETR! You bet.

Thread upstairs, nude women involved. Looking for opinions from everyone.

  132. Realwest, season ends in April/May the team with the highest points wins, there is no play-offs. The point system is pretty difficult. For example your team gets 3 points for a 2 goal lead on the opponents turf, yadda yadda and on and on the rules go. It is rather fascinating *yawn*
