Well, I've enjoyed the brief respite from my tasks, but I must away - more little tweaks and minors test to run on the new site. Tedious, but very important.

I was on the phone with my kids and oldest graddaughter. My DIL has still got the flu, for over a week, and my son wanted to make chicken soup for her. I was giving him, and the 9-year my recipe and insructions. The 9-year old belongs to a cooking club in her school for a few years..it was getting funny, as she is a sweetheart, and was making chicken jokes.
She called me to say that 'This is the best chicken soup I have ever tasted in my life!' Sarah Heartburn breaks me up, and I have a hard time keeping a straight face. My son was laughing for the first time since my poor DIL got sick.
I adore my DIL, but she hates to cook, and was telling me that she never actually saw chicken soup being made! Yes, I kept a straight face then, too.
Is anyone else having trouble getting the regular flu vaccine? Even our Endocrinologist cannot get any. The kids live on LI, and got their shots the day after my DIL got sick.
I think The One did not and does not have a clue as to how to handle this situation. Very scary.

Hi there Kosh's Shadow! I well understand what you mean! I've been so busy the last 10 days or so that I've barely had the time to be out here for more than an hour or so, every couple of days! But I'm still getting too little sleep as it is! Place is kinda addicting, no? Other than tired, how are you doing?
I'm doing well; as you can see, I finally decided to use my original nic, with the expected result. But it is better here.
My family is healthy; the dogs are healthy, but it is snowing in October. Global warming, my ass.
Next week, I might not be that busy at work, but we'll see. We had 2 vp's resign a week ago, but the president says we have enough money, and he's looking for more to expand.
And it looks like I might finish a science fiction story I've been working on, and I can send it to Dianna for criticism. This one is hard science fiction. I had an idea for a TV show, but it is not easy to get a TV show especially if you aren't in the business, so I'm writing stories in that setting.

This is only a short story. I have a book I'm working on, and it involves aliens, conspiracy theories, geeks and hippies, and maybe a lot of music references scattered through it. But I figure it is easier to get short stories published. This one I should have done, at least the first draft, this week. Then I'll take Dianna's advice on my other one, cut it up and put it back together again, and see if it is finally ready to submit.
Hey Kosh's Shadow - I'm not a - hold onto your chair - a fan of most science fiction, but how big a market is there for sf short stories? I mean how many magazines or whatever can you possibly get published in?!
Wretchard looks at the Shepard Fairey plagiarism controversy. (I'm not sure that morphing an AP press photo into the [in]famous 0 poster is all that different from fair use, but there you go.) In the article, he lines out four steps to becoming "the lying king" that are more generally relevant:

There are three SF magazines (I think the "syfy" channel might have a fourth: Analog Asimov's Fantasy and Science Fiction.
At this point, I've submitted something and had it rejected by all of them; one actually got a personal response. That one I'm rewriting with Dianna's criticism, and I'll submit it to one of the other 2 magazines.
So there is a market; it isn't great, but eventually I should be able to get something published.
The novel could be more popular, since it can play to conspiracy theory and alien believers. If they want to believe it is real, OK as long as they buy it.

I am holding my own, actually things are getting slightly better at work, they have really been running my small section into the ground until three of my co-workers got seriously hospitalized with possible stress related heart problems, and one had a stroke. The only blog I have been hanging at is also a blogspot, DeKalb officer speak, a Blog dedicated to taking down the corrupt police command of my employer. The Blog accomplished its mission last summer and has been pretty boring for the most part. The blog tries to stay away from national politics but I have gotten in my two cents a couple of times and the blogmaster let it slide. Over the last week I unexpectedly got some lady (I think) flirting with me. I am trying to figure out how to handle it. My password was good for this site also. I am afraid I might of rubbed some people the wrong way last week on this site. I wasn't trying to but it happened anyway but I think everyone has gotten over it. How's your health Real?

I'm using IE7 and Vista on my laptop. I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" just following a freeze, and after about thirty seconds or so, it just closes and restarts.
Who are you, and what have you done with realwest? LOL
The novel will take a lot more work. I am almost done with the long introductory section, probably 1/3 of it, but it needs some extensive proofreading.
The center section is roughly sketched out, but not much detail.
The ending is also sketched out, and I haven't decided to have a sequel, or add another section on to the rest of it.
I don't want to give the plot away, though.
Mostly, I've been concentrating on the short stories because they're easier to get published. The hardest part has been to get someone qualified to review them first. Of course, I think it's great, even if it needs work. (No one has called anything I've written recently crap.)

I hate Vista though, It runs fast enough, and it did have some nice features, but I have had a hell of a time getting games to load correctly and some simple stuff is now impossible until I figure it all out. I haven't been real impressed with Blogspots technical features. I really did get spoiled with Charles fine technical features.
One last thing LoFlyer, my Vista box crashes frequently, last time Windows blamed McAffee. However, I believe Windows 7 comes out in another week or two, so new computers will be beta teste for Windows 7

One computing site hired an independent firm to find the best system on which to run Vista.
Yep, three folks in our voice communication section had some serious issues. One will probably get disabilitiy, the other two will make it back, we hope. My sections gets even more stress than the voice people because thats just the way things are. We have to be right and projects completed on time 100 percent of the time, and of course that is near impossible. As for the DeKalb officers Blog they are narrowly focused on cop and judicial stuff and don't want to talk politics and barely puts up with my rants about county inefficiency. They put up with me cause I know where most of the bodies are buried around the county.
Kosh, I am looking into a discounted upgrade to Windows seven. The site they send you too wants to download software to verify my system is eligable for the discount. However you must IE to access the site, and IE will not allow me to download the software. Typical windows BS.
Loflyer - I hadda swap in my trusty ole Windows XP Pro, mostly cause the motherboard went kablooey and Best Buy and the Geek squad tried to replace the MB three damn times (and on one of those time, the GS guy opened the sealed cardboard shipping package, opened the shiny silver paper that the "new" motherboard was in, and as he removed the new motherboard, a capcitor fell off onto the floor). Since it was still under warranty, I gave Best Buy HELL, HELL I TELL YA, I WOULDN'T ACCEPT A NEW VISTA MACHINE, I insisted on a NEW XP-Pro! So when they delivered my new VISTA desktop with added bells and whistles and 5 gig Ram and DVD player and all, I accepted it. I HATED Vista right from the start. But now, some 5 months later, I figure I have it worked out now and it's really pretty good. I distinctly remembered that day - it was the day Gates announced the launch of Widows 7 beta and the story said you hadda be using IE 8. I'd accidentally downloaded IE 8, REALLY HATED IT and got in touch with a live person at either MS or H/P and they helped me do a work around so now I'm using IE 7 - and they keep sending me messages to download Securtiy Pack 2.0 but that's where the damn IE8 is located so I refuse to download it. You have to select the option where Windows tells you about new downloads, look at 'em and see if IE 8 or something you don't care about is involved and not download it at all. And NO, I'M NOT gonna go to Windows 7. Fuck Bill Gates.

Don't bother with it at night, but if you hit it during the day you will see the changing snow pack. Alta is the granddaddy of skiing in the US. They have a very cool ski area that has unbeatable snow and is about the least commercialised of the big American ski resorts.

Bat, KRON brings back memories for me. When I was a kid in northern Nevada that was our only channel. We had to put towers in the mountains and in our little towns to bring TV in. I grew up south of Reno but have lots of family in Reno now. I'm sure they are not thrilled about the snow if it came down that far.

Hey Killian - I've been using IE 7 since it first came out and NEVER had it freeze up on me or not do what I wanted it to do. With IE 8, and Vista, the look of IE changed between 7 and 8, and the second day I used it, I had one freeze up and one totally shut down my computer - it did flash some sort of warning or whatever, but too fast for me to understand. When I contacted HP the techie I spoke to said that the requests they had to unload 8 to revert to 7 were staggering in numbers.

/of course, with stock and options trading, there's no guarantees, but that's a really bullish indicator
You're right, Syrah. I used to race cars back in the day and I had a blast. I have my picture with my arm around a Bengal Tiger. Now I am "askared" of certain Los Angeles area freeways. OMG, laughing at myself. Maybe it's because I cheated death, who knows? I am getting older.
There is nothing wrong with being afraid of freeways. Crazy people drive on them. They scare the willies out of me.
Tigers and race cars, well with those, you know what to watch for. Crazy people on freeways, no telling what they will do.

And it looks like I might finish a science fiction story I've been working on, and I can send it to Dianna for criticism.
This one is hard science fiction. I had an idea for a TV show, but it is not easy to get a TV show especially if you aren't in the business, so I'm writing stories in that setting.

ReplyDeleteThis is only a short story. I have a book I'm working on, and it involves aliens, conspiracy theories, geeks and hippies, and maybe a lot of music references scattered through it.

This one I should have done, at least the first draft, this week. Then I'll take Dianna's advice on my other one, cut it up and put it back together again, and see if it is finally ready to submit.

Wretchard looks at the Shepard Fairey plagiarism controversy. (I'm not sure that morphing an AP press photo into the [in]famous 0 poster is all that different from fair use, but there you go.) In the article, he lines out four steps to becoming "the lying king" that are more generally relevant:
ReplyDelete" 1. The first and most important thing is for the impostor to claim the motivation of revolutionary impulses. That way even those who know he is lying will think he is lying in a “good” cause. If the last refuge of scoundrels is the flag, the ultimate protective banner is the Red Flag. Hannah Arendt once wrote “Lies are often much more plausible, more appealing to reason, than reality, since the liar has the great advantage of knowing beforehand what the audience wishes or expects to hear.” Find the hole in your audience’s brain and drive your truck of manure through it.
2. The second rule is to put forward the most extravagant claims. Don’t be half-assed about lying. The more extravagant the fib the better. A sufficiently resourceful fraud clears his path of unbelievers by sheer audacity alone. Tell a big enough lie and no one would believe you could be so bold. As the fictional Rudolf Rassendyl proved in the Prisoner of Zenda that it is better to pass yourself off as King of Ruritania rather than a minor noble. A minor noble may be questioned, but the King will not be. It is all or nothing. And given that no one wants to tug at the Royal Robe to see if it is real ermine, the fraudster often gets it “all”.
3. The third rule is that when questioned, destroy the questioner. When impersonating the King be determined to have everyone who doubts your identity thrown in the tower for treason. Once you succeed in beheading the first challenger there will be no second challenges.
4. The fourth rule is the most important. Avoid trying to bluff those who are too big to be faced down. What undid both Fairey and Ward Churchill was that they didn’t know when to stop their imposture. They finally took it too far. Fairey, who had been successful up to that point tried to bluff his way past a major news organization and failed. Ward Churchill was already a professor when he made his “little Eichmanns” speech after 9/11 unleashed a tide of outrage he couldn’t outface. If Fairey had not launched his poster and Churchill had not made his “little Eichmanns” speech, they might still be intellectuals in good standing."

At this point, I've submitted something and had it rejected by all of them; one actually got a personal response. That one I'm rewriting with Dianna's criticism, and I'll submit it to one of the other 2 magazines.

The novel could be more popular, since it can play to conspiracy theory and alien believers. If they want to believe it is real, OK as long as they buy it.

I am holding my own, actually things are getting slightly better at work, they have really been running my small section into the ground until three of my co-workers got seriously hospitalized with possible stress related heart problems, and one had a stroke. The only blog I have been hanging at is also a blogspot, DeKalb officer speak, a Blog dedicated to taking down the corrupt police command of my employer. The Blog accomplished its mission last summer and has been pretty boring for the most part. The blog tries to stay away from national politics but I have gotten in my two cents a couple of times and the blogmaster let it slide. Over the last week I unexpectedly got some lady (I think) flirting with me. I am trying to figure out how to handle it. My password was good for this site also. I am afraid I might of rubbed some people the wrong way last week on this site. I wasn't trying to but it happened anyway but I think everyone has gotten over it. How's your health Real?

ReplyDeleteI'm using IE7 and Vista on my laptop. I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" just following a freeze, and after about thirty seconds or so, it just closes and restarts.
Who are you, and what have you done with realwest? LOL
Kosh, if your story gets to be a movie do you think you can get DEZ a starring role? ;-)

ReplyDeleteI am almost done with the long introductory section, probably 1/3 of it, but it needs some extensive proofreading.
The center section is roughly sketched out, but not much detail.
The ending is also sketched out, and I haven't decided to have a sequel, or add another section on to the rest of it.
I don't want to give the plot away, though.
Mostly, I've been concentrating on the short stories because they're easier to get published. The hardest part has been to get someone qualified to review them first. Of course, I think it's great, even if it needs work. (No one has called anything I've written recently crap.)
PBJ, I think DEZ would be fine, except the aliens are the bad guys, and I don't want to find out what he'd do if he finds out.

But I'm a tad confused about that blog you were at - if it was dedicated to a particular mission, and it accomplished it's mission, is it going to go to broader areas of community (however you want to define "community") concerns or just fold up it's tent?

Got a new computer, that is a screaming fast machine. I hate Vista though, It runs fast enough, and it did have some nice features, but I have had a hell of a time getting games to load correctly and some simple stuff is now impossible until I figure it all out. I haven't been real impressed with Blogspots technical features. I really did get spoiled with Charles fine technical features.

Yep, three folks in our voice communication section had some serious issues. One will probably get disabilitiy, the other two will make it back, we hope. My sections gets even more stress than the voice people because thats just the way things are. We have to be right and projects completed on time 100 percent of the time, and of course that is near impossible. As for the DeKalb officers Blog they are narrowly focused on cop and judicial stuff and don't want to talk politics and barely puts up with my rants about county inefficiency. They put up with me cause I know where most of the bodies are buried around the county.

ReplyDeleteLoflyer - I hadda swap in my trusty ole Windows XP Pro, mostly cause the motherboard went kablooey and Best Buy and the Geek squad tried to replace the MB three damn times (and on one of those time, the GS guy opened the sealed cardboard shipping package, opened the shiny silver paper that the "new" motherboard was in, and as he removed the new motherboard, a capcitor fell off onto the floor). Since it was still under warranty, I gave Best Buy HELL, HELL I TELL YA, I WOULDN'T ACCEPT A NEW VISTA MACHINE, I insisted on a NEW XP-Pro!
ReplyDeleteSo when they delivered my new VISTA desktop with added bells and whistles and 5 gig Ram and DVD player and all, I accepted it. I HATED Vista right from the start. But now, some 5 months later, I figure I have it worked out now and it's really pretty good. I distinctly remembered that day - it was the day Gates announced the launch of Widows 7 beta and the story said you hadda be using IE 8. I'd accidentally downloaded IE 8, REALLY HATED IT and got in touch with a live person at either MS or H/P and they helped me do a work around so now I'm using IE 7 - and they keep sending me messages to download Securtiy Pack 2.0 but that's where the damn IE8 is located so I refuse to download it.
You have to select the option where Windows tells you about new downloads, look at 'em and see if IE 8 or something you don't care about is involved and not download it at all.
And NO, I'M NOT gonna go to Windows 7. Fuck Bill Gates.

ReplyDeleteThese are webcams from the Alt Ski area in Utah. Don't bother with it at night, but if you hit it during the day you will see the changing snow pack. Alta is the granddaddy of skiing in the US. They have a very cool ski area that has unbeatable snow and is about the least commercialised of the big American ski resorts.
Hey Loflyer - what version of IE are you using? Cause you have to use IE 8 for Windows 7 and they assume that we've already downloaded IE 8 -maybe that's why you can't get you systemt to download Windows 7?!

ReplyDeleteBat, KRON brings back memories for me. When I was a kid in northern Nevada that was our only channel. We had to put towers in the mountains and in our little towns to bring TV in. I grew up south of Reno but have lots of family in Reno now. I'm sure they are not thrilled about the snow if it came down that far.

Hey Killian - I've been using IE 7 since it first came out and NEVER had it freeze up on me or not do what I wanted it to do.
ReplyDeleteWith IE 8, and Vista, the look of IE changed between 7 and 8, and the second day I used it, I had one freeze up and one totally shut down my computer - it did flash some sort of warning or whatever, but too fast for me to understand. When I contacted HP the techie I spoke to said that the requests they had to unload 8 to revert to 7 were staggering in numbers.

You're right, Syrah, however those guy's in Vegas trusted their white tiger. ( I still cannot believe I did that but the picture is really cool.) The freeways are insane here. My hubby drives them all day and even when he is driving we've had some "near death" experiences, I kid you not.
