Obama, Reid, Pelosi, et al should submit their Healthcare "Reform" bill to the Pulitzer committee for BEST FICTIONAL WORK...they're sure to win. Although, even for a piece of fiction, some parts are pretty unbelievable.
Speaking of patios, here's my dilemma. We've been getting a very curious raccoon showing up on our patio at night, walking up to the screen door, and boldly looking in. I've nicknamed the critter "Frankie", since I don't know its gender, so it could be Frank or Francesca. Anyway... the other day I set out some chicken; Frankie vamoosed when I approached the door, but when I checked back five minutes later, the plate was clean.
Now, I know the usual advice about feeding animals is that you're setting them up to depend on you. But I figure raccoons are constant foragers anyway... and Frankie has a veritable feast of garbage cans in the area to choose from. I enjoy his/her visits, so don't mind encouraging them by leaving a snack from time to time. Anything wrong with that?
(P.s. No, of course I can't be sure that it's always the same raccoon, but don't rain on my parade!)
The United States government does have a plan to invade Canada. It's a 94-page document called "Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan -- Red," with the word SECRET stamped on the cover. It's a bold plan, a bodacious plan, a step-by-step plan to invade, seize and annex our neighbor to the north.
OR, Raccoons are wild critters....don't leave anythng out of them and seal up your garbage as tight as possible. They are cute and furry, but they are also mean and nasty, carry an assortment of diseases and are not healthy for you or pets, if you have any.
Growing up in Colorado, we had to call the county animal control to come into our neighborhood to clear out an entire pack of raccoons that got very used to living with humans.

Oldest boy's football game was a success -- best game they've played all season. Final was 20-0; the opposing team only got two first downs the entire game. The boy played defense, which he likes, and made a couple of big blocks on one key tackle to stop them on fourth down; next play we ran it 65 yards for a touchdown, which pretty much sealed the deal.
Got home to find that my daughter had broken the tank on the toilet. Just got finished replacing that. Ugh.
OR -- Those racoons can also mess with your foundation if they start digging around down there. I had a family living beneath my deck too this summer. They'd come out and forage at night--or the mom would and the little ones would peek out after her, cute as hell. But I heard some digging and scratching and clunking going on down there, couldn't be good ... so I sprayed some coyote piss (you can buy the stuff) around the area and that made mom pack up and find a new home.

I had an old friend who, before 9/11, was devoting all her time to calling attenion to the plight of women under the Taliban. She stopped on 9/12 promptly from what I can tell.

While there may have been a collective sigh of relief across America after the news that the Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN, it made me wonder who other Census partners were.
In short, ACORN or not, the 2010 census will be an organizing tool for the American Left.

My problem all along is that overtly political organizations, say SEIU or ACORN, would be out collecting sensitive information on Americans. What would stop them from zapping off one copy of personal information for themselves as they submit it to the Census Bureau? The federal government We will essentially be paying organized labor and “social justice” organizations to recruit new members.
With such a tight grip on the Census by the Obama administration and its allies, one wonders what the end result will be and if it can be trusted.

The leftist views the individual as a material unit, it consumes and produces. Justice and equity revolve around balancing the consumption and production.
They completely ignore the physiological and spiritual needs of an individual. They think by providing certain material needs an individual will be happy and content.
What the authors did was replicate (making corrections for method) the famous experiments doen by Adorno & Co. that led to their book on the "Authoritarian Personality." That book, published during WWII, has remained the main source for the oft-repeated cant that conservatives have a personality defect.

OR -- Those racoons can also mess with your foundation if they start digging around down there. I had a family living beneath my deck too this summer. They'd come out and forage at night--or the mom would and the little ones would peek out after her, cute as hell. But I heard some digging and scratching and clunking going on down there, couldn't be good ... so I sprayed some coyote piss (you can buy the stuff) around the area and that made mom pack up and find a new home.

In short, ACORN or not, the 2010 census will be an organizing tool for the American Left.

My problem all along is that overtly political organizations, say SEIU or ACORN, would be out collecting sensitive information on Americans. With such a tight grip on the Census by the Obama administration and its allies, one wonders what the end result will be and if it can be trusted.

Decline Is a Choice
The New Liberalism and the end of American ascendancy.
The weathervanes of conventional wisdom are registering another round of angst about America in decline. New theories, old slogans: Imperial overstretch. The Asian awakening. The post-American world. Inexorable forces beyond our control bringing the inevitable humbling of the world hegemon.
On the other side of this debate are a few--notably Josef Joffe in a recent essay in Foreign Affairs--who resist the current fashion and insist that America remains the indispensable power. They note that declinist predictions are cyclical, that the rise of China (and perhaps India) are just the current version of the Japan panic of the late 1980s or of the earlier pessimism best captured by Jean-François Revel's How Democracies Perish.
The anti-declinists point out, for example, that the fear of China is overblown. It's based on the implausible assumption of indefinite, uninterrupted growth; ignores accumulating externalities like pollution (which can be ignored when growth starts from a very low baseline, but ends up making growth increasingly, chokingly difficult); and overlooks the unavoidable consequences of the one-child policy, which guarantees that China will get old before it gets rich.
And just as the rise of China is a straight-line projection of current economic trends, American decline is a straight-line projection of the fearful, pessimistic mood of a country war-weary and in the grip of a severe recession.

ReplyDeleteOn the one side you have a tragic view of human nature, of people that will always have human foibles, and of some aspects of the human condition (e.g., existence of violent crime or conflict) that are simply not amenable to solutions, or where attempts to "solve" them by force have side-effects ten times as bad. He calls it the "constrained vision". Another famous Sowell quote: "there are no solutions, only trade-offs".
On the other hand you have the unconstrained vision, that basically thinks every problem of the human condition can be solved by man.
And remember all: "raaaaacist" is spelled with at least 5 "a"s ;-)
