House Kills Resolution to Oust Rangel From Chair of Tax-Writing Committee
(Hat tip: doppleganglander)
House Republicans on Wednesday tried to pass a resolution to oust Rangel from his chairmanship following the reading of a long and stinging list of alleged wrongdoing. The measure stemmed from a major ethics probe into Rangel's alleged failure to pay his taxes and disclose income on multiple properties -- as much as $1.3 million.
But House Democrats were quick to strike down the measure to remove Rangel, who represents New York's Harlem district, from his post. House Republicans refused to accept defeat of the resolution, and asked for a second recorded vote following the first. The reading of the resolution was interrupted several times, and at one point was challenged by Democrats before being put to a vote.
The Tragic Case of Roman Polanski
(Hat tip: Squatch. One thought to add: If you have thirteen year-old girlfriend of Roman Polanski on one hand, and a thirteen year-old child bride of a Mormon fundamentalist who practices polygamy on the other, why is Hollywood creeped out by the latter but not the former?)
Film director Roman Polanski is fighting to avoid extradition from Switzerland to the US, a country he fled over 30 years ago to escape serving time for the alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl. The case raises difficult questions about the US legal system, the current cult of celebrity and the excesses of the 1970s.
Chrysler Update
(From Coyote Blog - contributed to the A.N.D. by Pi Guy)
Rumors, credible rumors, are beginning to circulate in the car industry and the automotive press, that Chrysler may not make it another year primarily due to its falling sales and growing financial losses at partner Fiat….
The Congressional Oversight Panel has already said taxpayers will not see most of the $81 billion that they put into the American car industry. The $14.3 billion put into Chrysler is more and more likely to be lost completely. The biggest single loser if Chrysler cannot survive is the UAW which owns 55% of the company.
Forth!

ReplyDeleteWaPo's Tom Shales.
ReplyDeleteDunn Loring, Va.: Just wondered if you've noticed your habit of apologizing for media figues? For example, Polanski rapes and sodomizes a drugged 13-year-old and you write a flattering article that falsely understates his crime; Letterman jokes about the statutory rape of the teenage daughter of a conservative politician and you call the joke inartfully phrased but otherwise fine; Letterman admits to affairs with subordinate employees and you state it's alright because he's just a media personality. Do you ever condemn anything done on TV unless it's done by a conservative?
Tom Shales: Hello, Dunn Loring, I didn't want to sign off without trying to answer your question. I didn't realize I had written a column defending Roman Polanski and minimized his crime - are you sure it was me? I mean, I? There is, apparently, more to this crime than it would seem, and it may sound like a hollow defense, but in Hollywood I am not sure a 13-year-old is really a 13-year-old.Do I ever condemn anything done on TV unless it's done by a conservative? Honestly - I don't think you could build a very strong case against me on that particular charge. I'd have to go back and read dozens and dozens of columns from the past several years - UGH! You can do that if you want. But remember, I am a critic, I don't have to be "fair and balanced" and critize every faction equally. I swear to you I do not do it on ideological or political grounds, not consciously. I would hate to be that predictable. Thanks for dropping by.......

Alarm over debt draws together diverse coalition
ReplyDeleteAlarm over debt draws together diverse coalition
By Edward Luce and Tom Braithwaite in Washington
Published: October 7 2009 19:26 | Last updated: October 7 2009 19:26
Reaction against Barack Obama’s “Bail-out Nation” has created a coalition of conservatives, libertarians and independents alarmed by the growth of US national debt, says Michele Bachmann, a rising star of the Republican party.
Ms Bachmann, a second-term congresswoman, who played a prominent role in the “town hall” agitations against Mr Obama’s healthcare reforms made her comments against the backdrop of sharply falling support for the Democratic party – although Mr Obama’s personal approval rating remains high. A Gallup poll on Wednesday showed the two parties running almost neck and neck for the first time since 2006 – with the Republicans at 44 per cent and the Democrats at 46 per cent. The pollster also showed most independents favouring the Republicans over the Democrats – again, reversing the trend of recent years.
“What we are seeing is a real sense of unease among American people and not just Republicans,” Ms Bachmann said in an interview with the Financial Times.
“Whether it’s the government bail-out of the banking system, or the White House sacking the chief executive officer of General Motors, or the bail-out of AIG, or the level of debt accumulation, more and more people are joining a coalition that is saying this is unconstitutional.”

Yeah, rightly so. De-invest and shun companies that do business with rogue nations such as Iran. Siemens rightfully deserved so and they should also be excluded from bids for other governmental high-speed-train projects worth 13 billion dollars.

ReplyDeleteRookie cut from Ravens dies in Washington
SEATTLE (AP) — Tony Fein, an Iraq war veteran and NFL rookie linebacker who played with the Baltimore Ravens during the preseason, has died of unexplained causes after collapsing at a friend's house on the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington state.
Fein, 27, an undrafted rookie free agent from Mississippi, was lying face down and unconscious, vomiting and barely breathing when medics arrived at a house outside Port Orchard just before 9 a.m PDT Tuesday, said Mike Wernet, a battalion chief and medical officer with South Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

Yes, can't get in. Found this:
ReplyDeleteJAKARTA (BNO NEWS) – A powerful earthquake struck far below the Celebes Sea on Thursday morning, according to seismologists.
The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude between 6.1 and 6.9, struck about 184 miles southeast of Jolo on the southwestern Philippines’ Sulu Archipelago islands chain. It happened around 5.41 a.m. local time (21.41 UTC Wednesday).
The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 369 miles (595 kilometers) deep, making it an extremely deep earthquake. Because of the depth, the earthquake had no tsunami potential and, even if land was nearby, it would most likely not have been felt.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the earthquake as a 6.9-magnitude, while the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi Dan Geofisika (BMG) put the magnitude at a much weaker 6.1-magnitude. The United States Geological Survey had a 6.7-magnitude.

Living in California as I do, me too. Guess it's time to check up on the earthquake kit and make sure the breakables have museum hold.
I need to replenish the bottled water myself, Russkilit. We're here in Los Angeles county.

These are in our cars in case something happens and we're not home. It's pretty basic and it's for 2 people:
- Change of clothes and shoes ('cause you gotta be fashionable even in a catastrophe ;})
- First aid kit
- Blanket
- Bottled water and backpacking food and food prep stuff
- Flashlight and batteries
- Portable radio
Russ..don't forget terletpaper whatever you do. Terletpaper can be considered a precious commodity at times.
ReplyDeleteI...well..I'm really not kidding. :)
USGS shows three major earthquakes in the "last day", one in the "last hour".
ReplyDeleteConsider adding:
ReplyDeletePonchos
Mylar blankets
Esbit (IIRC) fuel cubes and stove
Matches or lighters
Notebook with important phone numbers

I am with you on that. Stuff was like gold on field exercises. Always tell the old troops from the FNG's. Old guys carried a roll in a ziploc bag squished flat and always in the ass pack of the web gear.
Terletpaper is also rightfully known as "all-purpose paper" in the Scouts. Have some.

ReplyDeleteHeh. You're absolutely right and I do believe it's in there. It's basically a backpacking kit as though going out for 4 days.
Since I don't backpack anymore (been there done that, now it's B&Bs) we put the packs and equip to good use.
