Maybe we can repay our debts in a different currency, too.
The world's oil producers, as well as China, Japan and France, are in secret talks to end the use of the U.S. dollar to buy and sell crude oil, a British newspaper reported on Tuesday, sending the American currency lower in overseas trading.
But as many as 80 million Americans are uninsured or underinsured, which means they have little access to a regular physician, checkups, preventive services, affordable prescription drugs, dental care or screening tests.

The U.S. apartment market in the third quarter turned in one of its weakest performances ever as the national vacancy rate hit a 23-year high despite being propped up by landlords willing to take lower rent to keep tenants, according to real estate research firm Reis Inc.
The U.S. apartment vacancy rate rose to 7.8 percent in the third quarter, its highest since 1986, according to the report released on Tuesday. Vacancies have been rising since the third quarter of 2007, according to Reis.
The U.S. apartment market has been reeling for more than a year as its main demand driver, job growth, disappeared in the U.S. recession.
Loans on apartment buildings have led the real estate industry in defaults with hotels a close second. These types of properties have short leases and downturns show up quickly.
But the tough times for both sectors do not bode well for the rest of the commercial real estate industry, where longer leases can mask falling market rents.
"It makes me wonder whether the avalanche is on its way for office and retail (real estate) unless things change really quickly and really drastically," Victor Calanog, Reis director of research, said.

Yeah, I heard someone mention that the commercial real estate bubble was due to burst in a couple of months. A couple reasons why rental vacancies are so high was and is the cheap cost of houses to purchase. Those that could and still can bought a house instead of renting. We just heard about the bad folks buying houses. Usually with low mortgage rates and decent prices the rental vacancy rates rise. We are seeing the same thing up here in Toronto as well.

The result will unconstitutionally increase the number of representatives in some states and deprive some other states of their rightful political representation. Citizens of “loser” states should be outraged. Yet few are even aware of what’s going on.

So it's worth watching a lawsuit now making its way through the federal courts that seeks to let seniors keep their Social Security benefits even if they reject Medicare. This could be a big deal.
Last week, Washington D.C. District Judge Rosemary Collyer handed a victory to three plaintiffs seeking that right. President Obama's Department of Health and Human Services had sought to dismiss the suit challenging so-called POMS rules that say seniors who withdraw from Medicare Part A must also surrender their Social Security benefits. (Part A covers hospital and outpatient services.) The judge ruled the plaintiffs have standing to contest their claim on the merits.

Six in 10 Americans believe "military action will be necessary." They were not stating this view as passive observers. The same portion of Americans said they "support" the U.S. taking military action to "keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons." A majority of Independents, Democrats and Republicans came to both stark conclusions. This was one poll. But it indicates Iran cannot count on American war fatigue.
When is that election? Early November. It's 1993 all over again (crosses fingers.) Dems win White House, try to enact health care reform, Republicans take NJ and VA state houses.

Folks want something done, not have fingers pointed. You can hear the kool aid drinkers calling the talk shows with their talking points, give him time, we inherited a mess, yadda, yadda. But that will not cut much ice for very long with jobs still being destroyed.
I'd be doing everything I could to hammer them on Obama's comments prior to the stimulus package being passed. Drill Obama with his own words, about limiting unemployment to 8% and such. Quote them claiming that the recession is over.
Over? Unemployment is still going up and quick. I know of 11 people in my immediate circle who have lost their jobs since Sept 1 other than me.
But as long as Obama is threatening business almost every day with health care taxes and the like, unemployment will not get better.

Officials at Valley Forge National Historical Park said yesterday that they would begin shooting massive numbers of deer, possibly as soon as next month, rejecting a Villanova activist's proposal to shrink the herd through contraception.
Park managers also said that the growing number of deer would require them to shoot more animals than originally expected - 500 the first year, 500 the second, and between 250 and 300 in years three and four.
That would reduce the herd 86 percent.
Deer are a HUGE problem in this region, but they are far from dumb animals. When they figure out that there's a shoot at Valley Forge, they'll be down in my neighborhood in DROVES. Happens just like that every year during hunting season. After the first day, they KNOW.

As someone who hunted deer for years, I can tell you from personal experience that they know when you are armed. You can walk up close to them when unarmed, but carry a fire arm and they are gone once you get within 200 yards. Archery is a little different but they are still very wary.
Conversely, turkeys I been able to walk right up on with a bow or a shot gun.

In a heavy-handed attempt at reviving support for health-care reform, the White House orchestrated a massive photo op to buttress its claim that front-line physicians support Obama.
A sea of 150 white-coated doctors, all enthusiastically supportive of the president and representing all 50 states, looked as if they were at a costume party as they posed in the Rose Garden before hearing Obama's pitch for the Democratic overhaul bills moving through Congress.
The physicians, all invited guests, were told to bring their white lab coats to make sure that TV cameras captured the image.
But some docs apparently forgot, failing to meet the White House dress code by showing up in business suits or dresses.
So the White House rustled up white coats for them and handed them to the suited physicians who had taken seats in the sun-splashed lawn area.
I linked to something (which I'll never find now) a while back...a poll stating that up to 40% of our doctors would consider quitting if Obamacare passes.

If we apply that same percentage to just Congress, that means about 166 Representatives and 27 Senators are uninsured or underinsured.

So it's worth watching a lawsuit now making its way through the federal courts that seeks to let seniors keep their Social Security benefits even if they reject Medicare. This could be a big deal.
Last week, Washington D.C. District Judge Rosemary Collyer handed a victory to three plaintiffs seeking that right. President Obama's Department of Health and Human Services had sought to dismiss the suit challenging so-called POMS rules that say seniors who withdraw from Medicare Part A must also surrender their Social Security benefits. (Part A covers hospital and outpatient services.) The judge ruled the plaintiffs have standing to contest their claim on the merits.

ReplyDeleteThe futures show the market should open on the upside today. Again tread softly in the market as unemployment numbers are likely to be very bad for quite a while. In fact, a great campaign issue should be there for the taking for the Republicans - Jobs, jobs, jobs.
I see littleoldlady has spotted an article that the Obama administration may be starting to think that it might be a good thing to encourage hiring.

ReplyDeleteFolks want something done, not have fingers pointed. You can hear the kool aid drinkers calling the talk shows with their talking points, give him time, we inherited a mess, yadda, yadda. But that will not cut much ice for very long with jobs still being destroyed.
I'd be doing everything I could to hammer them on Obama's comments prior to the stimulus package being passed. Drill Obama with his own words, about limiting unemployment to 8% and such. Quote them claiming that the recession is over.
Over? Unemployment is still going up and quick. I know of 11 people in my immediate circle who have lost their jobs since Sept 1 other than me.
But as long as Obama is threatening business almost every day with health care taxes and the like, unemployment will not get better.
Busy today trying to finish up the spring schedule which means riding herd on my underlings to get them to do things like choose what rooms they want to teach in and giving me course descriptions. It's like herding cats.

Officials at Valley Forge National Historical Park said yesterday that they would begin shooting massive numbers of deer, possibly as soon as next month, rejecting a Villanova activist's proposal to shrink the herd through contraception.
Park managers also said that the growing number of deer would require them to shoot more animals than originally expected - 500 the first year, 500 the second, and between 250 and 300 in years three and four.
That would reduce the herd 86 percent.
Deer are a HUGE problem in this region, but they are far from dumb animals. When they figure out that there's a shoot at Valley Forge, they'll be down in my neighborhood in DROVES. Happens just like that every year during hunting season. After the first day, they KNOW.
Of course, Obama wants to spend more money:

We have a congress that gets more deeply divided all the time, as the left, far left, loony left, and tin-foil-hat-wearing left are dividing like salmonella on old potato salad. Perhaps a meaningful campaign in 2010 could restore some sanity, but that would require, methinks, hitting most members of the RNC on the head with 2X8 floor joists Punch and Judy fashion until they stop thinking that the best strategy is to play the culture wars game. Oh yeah, that's worked:

ReplyDeleteAs someone who hunted deer for years, I can tell you from personal experience that they know when you are armed. You can walk up close to them when unarmed, but carry a fire arm and they are gone once you get within 200 yards. Archery is a little different but they are still very wary.
Conversely, turkeys I been able to walk right up on with a bow or a shot gun.
Crows are the same way.

What benefit would the Oil Bastards get out of switching? Is the dollar to unstable? Weakening the USA would seem to be counter productive. If the US economy stagnates, the rest of the world will as well...even China. If nobody buys their cheapass crap here, they will feel that eventually, yes?

White House's botched 'op'
ReplyDeleteIn a heavy-handed attempt at reviving support for health-care reform, the White House orchestrated a massive photo op to buttress its claim that front-line physicians support Obama.
A sea of 150 white-coated doctors, all enthusiastically supportive of the president and representing all 50 states, looked as if they were at a costume party as they posed in the Rose Garden before hearing Obama's pitch for the Democratic overhaul bills moving through Congress.
The physicians, all invited guests, were told to bring their white lab coats to make sure that TV cameras captured the image.
But some docs apparently forgot, failing to meet the White House dress code by showing up in business suits or dresses.
So the White House rustled up white coats for them and handed them to the suited physicians who had taken seats in the sun-splashed lawn area.
