  3. Hi, littleoldlady! I haven't had fruit cup since about August, 6th or thereabouts!

  4. Pi Guy,

GREAT! I'm set for the day! (I used one of the ones you sent yesterday as a Twitter post. ;-)

    BatGuano,

Has it been that long? As you can see, you get designer fruitcup here. Posted fresh everyday! :-)

    Ruh roh! This little tidbit
isn't going to make you a FOO (Friend Of Obama)...

Israeli foreign minister: No chance for peace deal

Lieberman told Israel Radio on Thursday that anyone who thinks the two sides can soon reach a deal ending their decades-old conflict "doesn't understand the situation and is spreading delusions."

    The truth is...OUCH!

  6. "Has it been that long?"

Yes, it has. I am happy I found you. And I love fresh fruit cup.

  7. If you hang out, Bat, you're sure to see some more familiar faces, even tonight (or this morning, depending).

Just dropping by to say good night to you, Pi, and littleoldhouseandgardenforummanager. : )

'Night guys! Say hi to P2 and whoever else pops in for me, please.

Israel has been down the conciliatory road many times. There can be no peace with the Palis.

  10. BatGuano,

Yes of course! But that reality is not supposed to be VERBALIZED! ;-)

Nearly two out of three of the world's Muslims are in Asia, stretching from Turkey to Indonesia. India, a majority-Hindu country, has more Muslims than any country except for Indonesia and Pakistan, and more than twice as many as Egypt. China has more Muslims than Syria. Germany has more Muslims than Lebanon. And Russia has more Muslims than Jordan and Libya put together.

Tonight is trash night for us at the little/tall old household - if I remember! ;-)

    Help yourself to fruitcup!

How've you been and WHERE have you been?

  18. Been hanging out at the old casa. Things are slow at the shop (something about the economy) and I don't have any projects. Lurking a lot. I hear your home team did OK yesterday?

  20. WE WON! YAY!

I almost missed the game because they stuck it in the middle of the afternoon. World Series Champs, but no respect. Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not sure which I like better. VDH's writing style or his point of view. Oh heck, I like them both. Such a break from the drivel, things were slow last night so for comedy relief I watched some of Keith Olberman. "We're going to defeat death!" Side note: the show was taped, Keith was at the ball game.

    ReplyDelete
  22. "WE WON!" Now that's the lol I remember, pragmatic in defeat but gracious in victory. I see a contribution to the Penn PowerBall on the horizon.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good Morning C2. Thanks {lol} for fruitcup.

    Welcome BatGuano.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "We're going to defeat death!"

I, for one, am SO happy that people will no longer be "dying in the streets of America"! I also suspect that if they pass the legislation they're talking about it will be so loaded with unintended consequences that ALL OF US will be reeling from it.

AND, I am STILL trying to figure out how they are getting away with spinning a 900 billion dollar price tag as "a good thing".

    ReplyDelete
  25. Panhandler,

Meh. I bombed out on last night's PowerBall. :-( I thought that FOR SURE it was my time to win, too!

    Hey, Erik! :-)

    Good morning!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great - Florida 2, Penn 1, what are the odds. lol, Erik wants to know why there isn't a joke forum on the new site. He's going to be frothing at the bit once his library arrives.

  27. We're already have so many (GREAT) forums I'm afraid we'll all be suffering from ADHD bouncing around gathering info! ;-) Nonetheless, I am excited to be heading up the "domestic" topics forum.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The one deer recipe that I've ever tasted that was the least bit EDIBLE, IMO, was made by an ex-sister-in-law who put the meat (sliced paper thin) in a slow cooker for about 3 days.

Deer meat is just too dense to eat.

/I'm not a big meat fan anyway, but still...

  77. Good morning.

Look for the market to open on the upside as ALCOA seems to have a better than expected profit number. All of the layoffs have dropped payroll costs to the point that even much lower sales are still generating a profit. Herein lies where the "jobless recovery" is coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yesterday was absolutely beautiful.

There is a student here from Fiji -- we compared the weather forcasts for Fiji and Atlanta and they were essentially the same -- a couple degrees cooler here at night and one degree warmer there in the afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  82. The CEO of Coke (who is, by the way, a very nice man) weighs in on the Obamamama plan to tax soda/pop/Coke (in this part of the country, all soft drinks are "Cokes").

Those pushing for this tax lack some essential facts, not to mention some basic common sense. Over the past 20 years, the average caloric content of soft drinks has dropped by nearly 25%. This is due in large part to a determined focus by our company and others on the diet/light category with brands like Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero and Powerade Zero. Even soft drinks with sugar, like Coca-Cola, contain no more calories (140 calories in a can) than some common snacks, breakfast foods and most desserts served up daily in millions of American homes. And while obesity rates have skyrocketed, sales of regular soft drinks decreased by nearly 10% from 2000 to 2008, according to the industry publication Beverage Digest.

So where are all of the extra calories in the American diet coming from? Research from the United States Department of Agriculture shows that added sugars, as a percentage of total daily available calories, have declined 11% since 1970. Yet the percent of calories from added fats and flour/cereal products has increased 35% and 13%, respectively, during that same time period.

Will a soft drink tax change behavior? Two states currently have a tax on sodas—West Virginia and Arkansas—and they are among the states with the highest rates of obesity in the nation.

  84. From yesterday's BotW:

John Kerry, the former junior senator from Massachusetts who by the way served in Vietnam, is leading the effort in the Senate to pass Cap'n Trade, a measure to combat so-called global warming by imposing massive taxes on energy. Blogger Dan Calabrese notes a revealing Kerry quote from last week:

Let me emphasize something very strongly as we begin this discussion. The United States has already this year alone achieved a 6% reduction in emissions simply because of the downturn in the economy, so we are effectively saying we need to go another 14%.

Wow. To accomplish Kerry's environmental goals, all we need to do is shrink the economy even more and keep it shrunken--in other words, for the recession to turn into a permanent depression. If you think that's a good idea, call your senator and urge him to vote "yes" on Cap'n Trade!

  89. Annoying public art, Canadian style

For Nuit Blanche 2009, The Apology Project will be staged in its largest scale thus far. A cluster of 55 people wearing large brown paper bags on their bodies will congest a public hallway and personally apologize to every person who ventures through them. The uncanniness of this human blockade will disrupt the regular flow of traffic and provoke reflection about passive aggressive behavior. Who are these people? Why are they here? Why are they wearing brown paper bags over their bodies? There is an enigma about what precisely they are sorry for and why they are choosing to continue doing something that they find reproachable. If it is their awkward presence in the space that they are apologizing for, why do they chose to remain there? Why not just stop an offensive behavior rather than continue to indulge in it and apologize?

In the context of Nuit Blanche, endurance will become a significant component of the work as these people will be standing in brown paper bags and apologizing for 12 hours. Time will become a device that at once tests the physical limits of the performers and also testifies to their will to be obnoxious and continue to maintain a disruptive posture even though they are physically exhausted.

Hamas Finds Gaza Tunnels’ $500 Million Loss Worse Than Madoff

Investment opportunities are rare in the Gaza Strip. So when Nabila Ghabin saw one last year, she pawned her car and jewelry and put $12,000 into a network of tunnels that brought in supplies smuggled from Egypt.

She was one of about 4,000 Gazans who gave cash to middlemen and tunnel operators in 2008 as Israel blocked the overland passage of goods. Then Israeli warplanes bombed the tunnels before and during the Dec. 27 to Jan. 18 Gaza offensive and the investments collapsed.

Now investors, who lost as much as $500 million, want their money back from Hamas, which runs Gaza. Hamas Economics Minister Ziad Zaza says about 200 people were taken into custody in connection with the tunnel investments; most have been released. Hamas is offering a partial repayment of 16.5 cents on the dollar using money recovered from Ihab al-Kurd, the biggest tunnel operator.

  96. Daniel Henninger reviewed Michael Mooron's latest piece of dreary agit prop today. In the review was this gem:

We live in an age of ideologically transgendered leaders. France's Nicolas Sarkozy ridicules Mr. Obama's "dream of disarmament" one day and the next calls for redefining GDP in terms of happiness. Germany's Angela Merkel hops a little bit right or a little bit left as the moment requires.
