C2 PREVIEW: Help and Support Forum

So we had this idea.

When we move into our new digs, it might be a cool thing if you all had a place to go for help with technical issues, should they come up. Trouble uploading an avatar? We're on it. Something just plain not working? Let us know.

Though many will be pitching in, this forum will be hosted by the architect of the new building, Running Bare. Bare has worked for some of the most prestigious software companies in the world, and he totally loathes an unsolved problem. Unless the Patriots are on Monday Night Football. Then, it's the back burner for you, pal!

One note: You may not recognize Running Bare in the new place at first, as he's still kicking around screen name ideas in his head. Last I heard, Supreme Overlord of C2 Nation was still available, but even if it wasn't, if he wants it, he can just steal it, and there's nothing we can do about it.

And by the way, if we haven't said it enough, one more time wouldn't hurt: Thanks, Bare, for all you've done. We're almost home!

203 comments:

  1. Wait. We can use avatars? Dish, quick, how is it done?

  2. Thanks to the team and particularly to Running Bare also from me.

If he is the 'Supreme Overlord' what are we gonna be then. Knights & Dames?
    Archdukes & Archduchess'?

    Questions, so many questions!

  3. Callahan: He can call himself whatever he wants. As long as I am not declared a measly serf, I don't care. :D

  4. 1. I think the avatars will have to be square in shape, and they will display 100x100 on the screen. We'll have four or five already uploaded that you can choose from (cool red, white, and blue images we purchased and turned into avatars). You'll also get tag lines - not sure how long they'll be yet, but be thinkin' on that. ; )

    2. Callahan, hmmmmm...we have sort of a Colonial theme happening, so, there must be something out there!

The cool thing about Bare is that he doesn't need to be agreed with. He likes to debate, and he's solidly conservative. I think you'll like his style very much.

    He's also uber funny.

    ReplyDelete
  5. OH, gotta bold this:

You can choose from OUR avatars if you don't want to upload your own, but you WILL be able to upload your own.

(I didn't put that very well. Sorry.)

  6. Ditto to what that Callahan guy said up there.

  25. 1SG, HTML is hard to explain in a window that accepts it, because if you type it out the way you should, you won't see the code but the result.

We're going to prepare a little tutorial on how to do this, though, in a .jpg and post it so those interested can see exactly what they're supposed to do. It's not as hard to do as it is to explain.

(And by the time I've posted this, you will probably have learned it already from someone who's discovered a good way of teaching it.)

We'll get you there. I'll work on that tutorial tonight, maybe.

  52. So, here is a run-down of the planned features (some of which are actually done)

    1. Standard blogging - adding posts, commenting, etc...

    2. User-submitted Link type thing, similar to the link viewer functionality found on other blogs...

    3. "Favorites"

    4. The commenting will allow some standard html, the standard Bold, Italic, Underline stuff, but in addition will have a Link Button so you can highlight a word or phrase, press a button, and paste in the url and the link is created for you, and a limited supply of smilies.

    5. User Profiles will allow you to have an avatar, tag line, etc. If you add your twitter user name to your profile, you can display your latest tweet in you rprofile, so if someone looks at your profile they can see it - and t will be linked so they can follow you on Twitter...

    6. Several blog categories/forums, with regular contributors and original content - History forum, military forum, regular news/open thread forums, a "social" forum (The Liberty Pub), a financial forum, etc...

    7. RSS feeds will be available for each category/forum, so you can "subscribe" etc...

One thing I won't be doing, though, is displaying "Registration Dates", nor will I be putting in "Upding/Downding" options on comments - things like this tend to be used as a way of arguing a point, rather than actually arguing a point, and I think they distract from actual debate, and cause cliques and drive wedges between people. Too much drama associated with that type of stuff. Hope ya all are cool with that decision.

Lastly, any new features (and I'm sure there will be as time goes on) that get rolled out won't result in a post on the front page extolling my mad skillz, but will rather be found in the Help & Support Forum - again, I dont' want stuff like that to detract from the bigger picture.

Anyway, if you all think of any other features you might find useful, let me know, and they can get added to the development roadmap...

    ReplyDelete

  64. I'm reading a little about the swine flu outbreaks.
Apparently, there hasn't been a single outbreak at a nursing home. Seems to affect the younger(24 or less)moreso than the elderly.
They're thinking there'll be a lot of workplace disruptions, vaccinations to start in October.

OR, Obamacare started early and granny ain't gettin' the shot.

    You decide. I can't provide a link.

Interesting, the 1918 H1N1 also hit the young teen to young adult the hardest. In that case the virus caused an auto-immune response. Strong healthy immune systems reacted more strongly than weaker immune system. It was the auto-immune response that was lethal in the 1918 flu.

This H1N1 is not (yet) that lethal.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Any word on an ETA for the site?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have heard the same thing sos. It has something to do with the fact that the elderly have been getting some form of H1N1 cover in all the flu vacs they have gotten over the years. The fit and healthy 18-45 year olds are at a higher risk. Plus everything is sterilised now. The body does not get a chance to build up resistance.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well, I guess I am going to have to go to ding's anonymous then. No big deal though. I see the reasoning why and I understand what you mean.

I have a few issues to resolve - some things that are annoying the hell out of me because they won't work the way they should - quirky stuff. I hope to track thoe unresolved issues down in the next day, followed by a little bit of usability testing... I have some other irons in the fire for my day job the next few days, but I hope I hope I hop I can get this all pulled together and launch this weekend.

I'm really eager to release this site, or at least allow it to escape - If all goes well, and according to plan, I wanna say sometime on saturday. :)

No reason to get hysterical here.

LOL. I'm sure we'll get called that by others at some point, so it's certainly on the table LOL

    ReplyDelete
  77. RB any idea what browser it is going to work best on? I only use FF. I have not used IE in years.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I should clarify that they're saying there's no reasons for hysterics, not that you 2 are going berzerker on me here. heh.
    worded that badly.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Erik The Red

Mayo (IIRC) did an asthma study a while back looking into the increased incidents of asthma in kids. The study went against the "common knowledge" that environmental pollutants etc... where driving the increase. Mayo noted that farm kids, exposed to animals dust, pesticides and all kinds of (literally) crap, had a low asthma rate.

Mayo's thinking is that asthma is a hyper-allergic reaction, that kids raised in sealed house, schools with filtered air and uber clean food never get a chance for the immune system to develop a healthy allergy response.

I noted something similar over seas, if a kid gets to 5 years old their pretty bullet proof disease wise until 50ish or so. The immune system has developed against everything it encounters.

    ReplyDelete
  80. RB any idea what browser it is going to work best on? I only use FF. I have not used IE in years.

If I did it right, it should work the same on pretty much any major browser... IE, FF, Safari... I'm trying to stick with pure standards-based CSS on the display end as much as possible...

    Nope not at all.

H1N1 is a reference to the virus binding scheme to human cells, H1N1 binds much more easily than other types, resulting in a higher infection rate.

This one's virulence, how sick people get is pretty low, unlike 1918 which was very high, the combination of infection ease and virulence is what made 1918 so bad.

H1N1s are all not that common the reason CDC and other are being more cautious with this, is that if it mutates into something more virulent then it might be a problem.

Stressing the basic precautions early and often is just trying to keep it as contained as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Man the word verification to post comments sure get harder to read as the night goes on.

Try not to write to the disk the pics where on. The files are likely still there it's the directory that's messed up. Even when stuff is deleted they aren't deleted, just the space used is marked free and until something new is written onto that space they still can be recovered.

    Woman, 107, mulls 23rd marriage

External drives are dirt cheap these days.

I have several, and do frequent backups of my home computer and keep them at work. And swap them every few days with the latest back up. I also keep my laptop, my wife's laptop and desktop all sync'd to each other.

    *okay I have over kill*

But I can find 10 year old emails......

There is also a couple of on line backup (subscription) services.

  138. Good evening

You will be relieved to know that President Obama says that the economy is turning around. At Bloomberg you find this:

Obama Says U.S. Must Avoid Removing Economic Stimulus Too Soon

"President Barack Obama said recent data suggest the U.S. economy is returning to growth and the administration must avoid removing stimulus programs prematurely.

“All the indicators would tend to suggest that we’re starting to see growth,” Obama said today in a Bloomberg Television interview. “What we have to be careful of is taking the crutches away from the patient too early.”"

What indicators? I'm seeing nothing even close to showing a turn around. Only true kool aid drinkers are saying that things are getting better, and they define the damage happening a bit slower as "improvement".

That's like saying that the Chicago Bears are improving cause they did not lose until the last minute of the game last night. No, they still lost and they are not a very good team. In the same way that the economy is not improving cause it is still contracting, it's just contracting a little slower.

Maybe Obama should remember that there are 14.5 million and counting unemployed out there. Go tell them that things are getting better.

Don't think you've missed too much. The Pats won in the last 5 minutes, a 107 year old woman is thinking about getting married for the 23rd time, and Paladin Phil lost his pics on his hard drive but is starting to recover them, little by little.

  144. Hmmm ...sounds about normal, then.

What could the 23rd time of getting married possibly hold for a woman of 107? (And don't even get me started on what it may or may not hold for her husband!)

Sounds like a good game for Pats fans. Who were they playing?

Phil, I wish you luck on recovering them ....that's always a hard pill to swallow when that happens.

  148. Boeing Co. employees vote to disband union

"Boeing's newly acquired and now union-free plant in North Charleston makes aft fuselage sections for the aerospace company's new 787 Dreamliner jet out of lightweight composite materials.

Boeing Co. workers in North Charleston voted overwhelmingly to disband their union in a move that could give the region an edge in landing an aircraft plant the company is looking to build.

Of the 267 ballots cast, 199 were in favor of decertifying the election that made them members of the International Association of Machinists. The company was pleased; the union was disappointed.

The local plant makes rear fuselage sections for Boeing's 787, a new fast-selling lightweight jet that has been delayed by snags with suppliers and an eight-week strike last year by the IAM.

Boeing has said it would consider North Charleston and its manufacturing hub outside Seattle, among other sites, for a new 787 assembly plant. A decision is expected by the end of the year."

    From Tapper's blog:

"President Obama will make the rounds on the Sunday shows in six days.

Not only will the president be interviewed on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, he will stop by CBS's Face the Nation, NBC's Meet the Press, CNN's State of the Nation, and.... Univision's Al Punto with Jorge Ramos.

Fox News Sunday did not make the cut.

Such a Sunday round-robin was called "The Full Ginsburg" in years past, named after Monica Lewinsky's attorney William Ginsburg, achieved the feat in February 1999.

Fox News made that cut, while Univision did not."

The 787 will be slowly shifted to NC.
The 777 and 747 will continue at Everett until the line is discontinued.
The 737 will continue at Renton until discontinued.

Unless WA changes the business climate Boeing is gone in 10-15 years from WA.

  161. Shooting leaves guard killed near Kemari oil refinery

KARACHI: Police claimed foiling a terrorist bid near Kemari Oil Refinery (KOR) here in Karachi but in exchange of fire, a security guard sustained bullet-inflicted injuries and succumbed to death, Geo news reported on Monday night.

Talking especially to Geo news, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Karachi Waseem Ahmed maintained, three culprits, disguised in women Burqas (veil), were on a van and wanted to barge into oil depot who later, over confrontation with security guard, opened fire, killing the unlucky on the spot.

He said police recovered arms and ammunitions during hot pursuit when militants abandoned three Kalashnikovs and at least eight hand grenades on the way and succeeded to flee.

“Following the incident, police have kicked off search operation in Kemari in order to locate the offenders, CCPO said, “claiming to have foiled a gigantic terrorist plot.”
