85th anniversary of 1st flight around the globe
ReplyDeleteA parking lot next to a playing field in Seattle's Magnuson Park was once part of the landing field where the first pilots to navigate the globe by air touched down in September 1924 to cheers from a crowd of thousands.
The aviation feat — which has been likened to the Lewis and Clark expedition and the first moon landing — was remembered on Sunday, when a small crowd of fewer than 100 people gathered on a grassy hillside overlooking Lake Washington to mark the 85th anniversary of the epic trip. On that day, two of the four Douglas World Cruisers landed along with a third plane that had joined the journey after its predecessor sank off Scotland.
"These old airplanes to us look like fragile, fabric-and-wood contraptions but ... they were as high-tech as you could get at the time," said Bob Dempster, executive director of the Seattle World Cruiser Association who plans to retrace the 1924 flight path in a replica Douglas World Cruiser in spring 2011.
JCM, thanks for that piece of aviation history.

ReplyDeleteThat's when Obama surged past McCain. Everybody thought he would do better with the economy. At least, that's what the MSM was telling everyone....I am not an economist, but I would say that, so far, President Obama has been a complete economic disaster.

ReplyDeletePLOOOOMMMIEEEEEE! Wow! GREAT to see you here! WELCOME!
Paladin: the Я in Russian is pronounced ya as in "yacht", and it also happens to be their first-person singular pronoun. Thus, Я = "I", and "Я -- R" means "I am R."
ReplyDeleteSo you can just call me Yar, I suppose... sounds nice and piratey!
*slips ploome a couple of shots of rum* shhhh don't tell Bar Wench who gave it to you. We try to keep her guessing who has the bottle. ;)

ReplyDeleteSage, Phil, read your posts on the closed thread....
I am going off line for the firat time in years...before midnight! Since I can't walk and chew gum, and am also The Slowest Typer in the World™, I have a bunch of things to do, and if I keep posting? I will still be doing it into the night!

ReplyDeleteI suggest a new strategy, Artoo. Let the Wookiee win.
Good night 2P. I am also off to neverneverland. See you all late tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteRdashR, for me, the organizing theme is one of the oldest known to man ...a gathering of good friends to discuss the events of the day. Oh ...and to enjoy each others company. :-)
ReplyDeleteGoodnight, Nana!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I have to log off for the night, too, but I'm glad to be here and will see you cats sometime tomorrow.

Good night Backwards R guy! Thanks for dropping by, and thanks for everything!
ReplyDeleteActually, though I wouldn't disagree with anything you've been told so far (we are a work in progress, and we are developing a sense of community), we DO have an organizing theme.
ReplyDeleteThe site will be primarily a politically moderate-to-conservative (in other words, center-right, not far right)forum. Everyone is welcome, though, as long as they can debate without becoming ugly or abusive.
We have a site being developed with a number of different "rooms" - a history forum, a book forum, a pub - that sort of thing. The main page will be straight news. It's almost finished.
CC,
ReplyDeleteCenter right!? I thought this was the place for bitter clingy gun nuts!
;-)
Oops! I'm talking to the wall. : )
ReplyDelete[C2 shouts, hoping he can hear]: Good night, Backwards R Guy! We hope to see you tomorrow!
Define "gun nut". ; ) LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm so brain dead from working on this stuff that I forgot to mention our Friends of Israel Forum, and our financial forum.
ReplyDeleteWe're going to have a bunch of "rooms" in the new place - it should give everyone a chance to stretch out.

13 years old....I cannot get past that part. Sorry Roman, but you are a pedofile and a rapist...anything good you may have done after that is tainted by that fact. I am voting for bringing him to trial.
I never watched Polanski film, drugging and raping a 13 year old.

ReplyDeleteReal,
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with the nic?
*dives for cover*
It's probably been posted before, but on the off chance it hasn't, the unemployment rate for "young Americans" (16-24) has hit an all time high of 52%. Yep, only 48% of Young Americans have been able to find gainful employment. That's higher then the Great Depression ending WWII (if you discount young Americans who "obtained employment" in the US military during WWII).
ReplyDeleteYO Desert Dog! Whas happening?!
ReplyDeleteMy 19 year old cannot find a job here in Phoenix. He starts his first term at school this January. There are no jobs for young, old, inbetween here right now. I do not feel the recession ending. In fact, it is getting worse here.
ReplyDeleteI am listening to my kids and wife singing on the MagicSing Karaoke machine. It is quite amusing.
ReplyDeleteJCM! Y'all ought to know that there isn't any cover deep enough for you! And don't bother running away, either, y'all will just die TIRED!
ReplyDeleteLOL!
How are you doing my friend?
Real,
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with the nic?
LOL JCM, you are in some kind of mood tonight!
Real,
ReplyDeleteROFL!
Doing well, getting things ready for tomorrow, hanging out here.
CC,
ReplyDeleteSpent most of the day reading industry standards for Printed Circuit Boards. Almost as much fun as reading the tax code.
My brain is fried......
Hey Desert Dog - man, I'm sorry to hear about your son. Hell I'm sorry for all the unemployed folks and all the UNDERemployed folks too.
ReplyDeleteI don't frankly give a damn what Bernacke, Obama, Geithner, or anyone else says, I'm really sorry to say that I'm not at all sure we've hit bottom yet.
And it's frankly damned OBSCENE for politicians and political types to talk about the recession being over, but the recovery will be long and slow. Idiots. WHAT DID Y'ALL DO WITH THAT DAMN NEAR ONE TRILLION DOLLAR STIMULUS MONEY? Huh? How many jobs did you create?
JCM! Y'all ought to know that there isn't any cover deep enough for you! And don't bother running away, either, y'all will just die TIRED!
ReplyDeleteDamn, Real, you woke up sounding BADASS tonight! Does this mean we're in for another of your epic rants?
Bring it on, my man! :-)
Well, since his highness' Barack the First's coronation, I have laid off 3 drivers. So, that stimulus has done exactly squat for me.
ReplyDeleteI do get to see a nice sign at the Airport everyday when I drive to the cargo area about how the wonderful stimulus is helping pay for a peoplemover Skytrain. I think that is an obscene use of taxpayer money.
Hey Pink - I don't think I'll be going on an epic rant or even just an extended rant - still feeling crappy from that flu shot and tired too.
ReplyDeleteBut the makings of a major league rant are there, so who knows?
How are y'all doing tonight?
I'm doing real good, RW. No flu shot for me, though ...most everyone I know who's ever gotten a flu shot has gotten sick afterward. I'm not convinced yet that it's the right course for me.
ReplyDeleteI am off to sleep y'all. Looking forward to the new digs. This place is nice in the meantime. The company is what makes it! Great to see you all!
ReplyDeleteHey DD - a "a peoplemover Skytrain"? WTH is THAT?
ReplyDeleteI thought that the Stimulus package was gonna go to create "green jobs" (although geographically no one said where they'd be and financially no one said how much they'd pay) but ya know, I kinda think that all those unemployed young Americans ought to be able to be trainable for green jobs - and even at minimum wage or slightly above minimum wage, they'd at least have JOBS.
Damn, if you were, say, 24, and had been unemployed just this year, what the hell would you put on your resume?
I'm also frankly surprised that more young Americans haven't gone into the military - with our CiC it would appear that they don't run much risk of getting into combat and a LOT of military jobs these days have a helluva lot more to do with computers and aircraft/avionics than they do with carrying a rifle up a hill.
I may be in disagreement with conservative (I really don't know) but damn, if someone is capable of working and wants a job, he or she ought to be able to get one.
See ya, D2!
ReplyDeleteWell Pink, I had a flu shot last year and another one the year before that and never had this kind of reaction - and never got the flu either - which, given my supressed immune system is somthing of a wonder all by itself. And if this year's flu shot makes me feel........well, fluish for a day or two, I'd druther have that then get the flu for real.
ReplyDeleteBut I think I'm gonna hold off on that H1N1 or whatever the Swine Flu virus name is until I'm sure that a) it won't GIVE me the damn swine flu
or make me sick as a dog for any length of time.
Good night DD - hope you have a good night! And that those "karaoke kids" don't keep you up all night!
ReplyDeleteYours too, JCM? I feel like mine is full. I hope I don't need to make any more decisions before tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteHey JCM - if y'all are still out here, do you have any idea of what Desert Dog was talking about with that people mover Sky Train? (I know it's geographically pretty damn far away from you, but you seem to have an encyclopedia's worth of knowledge in your brain!) ??
ReplyDeleteHey there Correspondence Committee - if y'all feel that your brain is fried, maybe y'all need to defrag that HD between your ears?!
ReplyDelete:)
Hahahaha - quite possibly so, 6p00e55005f9c78834. : P
ReplyDeleteReal,

PHX Sky Train
Well Correspondence Committee, there's hardly a day goes by that I don't wish I could add more RAM sticks to mine and maybe even get a MUCH LARGER HD between my ears, but I'm afraid I'd be embarrassed by the short amount of time that would be required for the data transfer!
ReplyDelete;)
Hey JCM - It's a fricking SHUTTLE BUS at the airport?!?
ReplyDeleteNo disrespect to the good folks who use the Phoenix Airport, but that sure a) isn't using a whole lot of money and b) IF it helps folks get around in the Phoenix Airport, what the hell kind of stimulus for the Nation is that?!
It's not exacly like building a transcontinental railroad or anything!
Hmmm - well it would appear that most folks have toddled off for the evening so I'm gonna try to get some much needed sleep myself!
ReplyDeleteHope you all have a great evening/early morning and that I get the chance to see y'all down the
road!!
Good night, all.
Real,
ReplyDeleteShhh, you harsh the buzz, lefty love to play with trains.......
Good night, realwest!!
ReplyDeleteI think it was federal money that they tried to get for a private club in Seattle (the Ranier Club, JCM - you probably remember this) - a members only club with membership dues. They needed some upgrades to the windows or something, and I think it was Jim McDermott who tried to set it up...though I'm sure JCM can correct me if it was some other Democrat.

ReplyDeleteHi PBJ! : )
ReplyDeleteGood to see you CC. Tres martinis here...shouldn't stay.
ReplyDeleteTake care you C2ers. Love ya!

ReplyDeleteI guess I'm still here until I cannot type. LOL Lots of work earlier and I was missing the interwebs.

ReplyDelete/like that
ReplyDeleteIt's the TFK thing. I like it!
Heck, I may be here all alone and not get any of my questions answered. But that's ok, I am tenacious, and am able to type to myself for a relatively long period of time.
ReplyDeleteI am here. You are being watched. : )
ReplyDeleteWorked earlier, played tonight.;-)
ReplyDeleteOh oh!
ReplyDeleteOh, I KNOW I am being watched, CC. Hahahaha!
