The Daily Broadside: Open Thread

We're a little busy with the new site at the moment, so please feel free to link up the latest news in the thread below and take it to any news stories you want to kick around.

To get you started though, here are a couple of things to mull over:

Media Matters: Hot Air “smeared” Van Jones by calling him a Truther

ACORN story fells the big oaks of mainstream media

You would be forgiven for having missed it, however, because it’s got almost no play in the mainstream media. It wasn’t the “New York Times”, CNN or NBC who broke the story. Rather, it was two twenty-something independents with a few thousand dollars, a bit of time and a lot of guts.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 32% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -8 (see trends).

  21. And yet again from Rasmussen:
"Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters nationwide now oppose the health care reform proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s the highest level of opposition yet measured and includes 44% who are Strongly Opposed."

Just 43% now favor the proposal, including 24% who Strongly Favor it.

But the overall picture remains one of stability. While the numbers have bounced a bit following nationally televised appearances by the president to promote the plan, opposition has generally stayed above 50% since early July. Support has been in the low to mid 40s."

  23. Hey PaladinPhil - it's not just the ROE's it's more like the CiC - in Vietnam we tried to win the hearts and minds and did such a crappy job of it - with lots of American casualties as a result, we pretty much changed our tactics and did our best to kill all of the enemy. Then Nixon was elected partly on the basis of his pledge to get out of Vietnam and it no longer mattered what the ROE was, most US troops tried to avoid combat; no one wanted to be the last American to die in Vietnam.
Our current CiC is trying to have it both ways:
win over the populace (a GREAT idea in a counter-insurgency war) AND beat the Taliban about the head and shoulders. But he hasn't authorized enough troops to do either job particularly well.
And Sasquatch - hello! I haven't been trying to hide my identity, TypePad has been!

Yeah we need far more troops on the ground. Unfortunately we will be pulling out soon. Our military needs to come home to rest, relax, refit, and retrain. They are doing a good job, but we have been over stretched and undermanned for years. Not something we are proud of. Harper is the one that confirmed it. I still have contacts in the reserves and know a lot of friends that were deployed overseas in the late 90's. If we could only increase the size of our standing army it would be great. It only lasts though as long as a conservative government is in power. Once the Liberals get in they start slashing the military with no regards to what it costs us in the long run. I hate Trudeau for what he started in the late 60's and through the 70's and early 80's.

Security guards gather in front of a shopping mall where military vehicles will pass towards Tiananmen Square, ahead of a rehearsal for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, in Beijing September 18, 2009. The Chinese government is flooding Beijing with armed police and up to one million security "volunteers" to head off any unrest over October's sensitive anniversary of 60 years of Communist Party rule.

  35. Hell, we cancel true defensive system designed to protect our allies from rogue nations. Instead relying on an open hand, which has already been slapped aside. Despite the abundant historical evidence that a strong defensive posture is effective in deterring others from aggressive actions.

If the current administration doesn't understand that basic lesson of history there is ZERO chance they'd increase man power in areas they could be offensive in nature. Although again historically you'd be hard pressed to find true offensive use of our military.

Buckle up, it's gonna' be a rough ride.

Up here Liberal is not a slam, that's the name of the center/left political party. All they have done is steal ideas from the left and right and claim them as there own. Healthcare up here was championed by Tommy Douglas of the CCF(father to the NDP). Liberals stole it, implemented it, and claimed all the glory. Also the Liberal party, under Lester B. Pearson, helped create the United Nation Peacekeepers. Look at what that institution is like now.

  37. Let's say you're preparing dinner and you realize with dismay that you don't have any certified organic Tuscan kale. What to do?

Here's how Michelle Obama handled this very predicament Thursday afternoon:

The Secret Service and the D.C. police brought in three dozen vehicles and shut down H Street, Vermont Avenue, two lanes of I Street and an entrance to the McPherson Square Metro station. They swept the area, in front of the Department of Veterans Affairs, with bomb-sniffing dogs and installed magnetometers in the middle of the street, put up barricades to keep pedestrians out, and took positions with binoculars atop trucks. Though the produce stand was only a block or so from the White House, the first lady hopped into her armored limousine and pulled into the market amid the wail of sirens.

  42. I went to a farmers market last weekend. Picked up a flat of fresh berries, and a bunch of finger potatoes and other root veggies.

I didn't look to see if they were organic.

Used WIC coupons. Since we do foster care we get WIC, and yes WIC gives out coupons for use only at farmers markets. If it weren't for the coupons I would have gone across the street to Albertson's and got the same thing cheaper, expect for the berries those were a deal.

Something to think about, WIC (tax money) handing out coupons for farmers markets....

Made an excellent pot roast with the veggies.

  45. hey Kenneth. I should know all about the undersized and underfunding. In 1986 when I joined the reserves I was issued a rifle with a date stamp on the barrel of 1959. We rarely had the funds for weekend exercises. Live fire range weekends were about twice a year. Need I go on?

I am writing this column because some lone voice in the wilderness has to speak the truth to power about how you conservatives are ruining your own lives, this country, and, yes, even the entire planet. If Gaia herself could speak to you, she would give you troglodytes a tongue-lashing — and that’s just for the polar bears alone. You don’t want to get her started on the drilling for oil. 60. Intel Used by Obama Found Iran Long-Range Missile Capacity Would Take 3-5 Years Longer

President Obama, in reaching his decision to ditch a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, used information from a May 2009 National Intelligence Estimate that said Iran would take three to five years longer than originally anticipated to build a long-range missile system, a senior administration official confirmed Friday.
