Slate: Introducing Bidenisms

To this, there is only one appropriate response for some: "My, but that Sarah Palin is an idiot."

From the piece:

Jacob Weisberg, author of the authoritative compilation of Bushisms, notes that George W. Bush's gaffes were often the result of unintentional incompetence, which made them endearing. They could make Bush seem like a lovable dimwit, a kind of presidential version of Archie Bunker or Homer Simpson. Biden's lapses are more akin to those of Michael Scott (who, like Biden, is a native of Scranton, Pa.). A statement becomes Bidenesque when his over-the-top attempts at folksiness fail. Unlike their distant cousins, Bushisms and Palinisms, Bidenisms generally stem more from arrogance or obliviousness than from difficulty with the English language or ignorance.

You see? Loopy Joe is not ignorant. He's merely "arrogant" or "oblivious". Because as we all know, it isn't a matter of "ignorance" to believe FDR got on television when the stockmarket crashed. He was just trying to be "folksy", and he missed the mark. Had Sarah Palin or George W. Bush said it, then it would have been ignorant.

Got that?

  15. Shug, it's good to see you. And a big good afternoon to Dez, PBJ and CC.

I agree Weisberg is making excuses for Biden, but I'm just happy to see his flubs get some attention. It's almost a backdoor way to poke fun at the Obama administration, which thus far most comedians are afraid to do. I'll know the tide has turned when Leno or Conan actually makes an Obama joke. (Letterman never will, of course.)

  24. DGL - I was actually happy to see someone from Slate acknowledge Biden's gaffes, myself - even if they have to offer a more flattering explanation than they would if he were a Republican.

I am fond of quoting "Murray Slaughter" from the Mary Tyler Moore Show in such situations:

When a donkey flies, you don't blame him for not staying up that long.

When they come up with a list of Obama's gaffes, which are fairly plentiful to date, I'll consider it a Sign of the End Times™.

  38. The Baucus Health Bill: A First Look

While the Baucus bill is an ambitious attempt to resolve the legislative logjam in Congress, it still contains the most objectionable features of the liberal health policy agenda that Heritage Foundation analysts, and many others, have detailed elsewhere

    Same Flawed Approach:
    Higher Taxes.
    An Individual Mandate.
    An Employer Tax Penalty.
    A Flawed Co-op for Insurance.
    Federal Insurance Rules.

    Medicaid Expansion.

  65. Scientists pull an about face on global warming

Latif is one of the leading climate modellers in the world. He is the recipient of several international climate-study prizes and a lead author for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He has contributed significantly to the IPCC's last two five-year reports that have stated unequivocally that man-made greenhouse emissions are causing the planet to warm dangerously.

Yet last week in Geneva, at the UN's World Climate Conference--an annual gathering of the so-called "scientific consensus" on man-made climate change --Latif conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade and that we are likely entering "one or even two decades during which temperatures cool."

The global warming theory has been based all along on the idea that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans would absorb much of the greenhouse warming caused by a rise in man-made carbon dioxide, then they would let off that heat and warm the atmosphere and the land.

But as Latif pointed out, the Atlantic, and particularly the North Atlantic, has been cooling instead. And it looks set to continue a cooling phase for 10 to 20 more years.

    Latif is ....

Mojif Latif is a scientist based in Hamburg/Germany who has been on the news here continuously for the last years propagating the man-made global warming meme. Since some months now he wasn't seen nor heard and now such a turn.

He is in it for the money. Making headlines is paying off quite handsomely for that guy, I bet.
